How to Use a Pothos Plant in your Aquarium.

Using a Pothos plant in your aquarium. The Pothos plant can be found in most garden centers and also stores like Home Depot and Lowes. We decided to use it primarily to help lower the nitrate levels in our Goldfish tank and it has certainly done the job. We take cuttings from the Pothos plant and add it to the HOB filter once it get bigger we put the roots into the tank.
** The pothos plant is toxic for some animals such as cats and dogs. Please research before use.

I have a 50 year old pothos plant. My grandma has kept it by cutting and propagating the cuttings, then throwing away the old, leggy stuff. She gave me 3 cuttings, which are now four. The fourth is running out of my filter. Awesome plant!

Ive never put a pothos on my tanks, however, I do use the "dirty" water from water changes as a fertilizer once a week to fertilize all of our plants and it's INCREDIBLY noticeable how much our plants like it! Btw thank you for actually knowing how to take care of your fish, too many people dont know/care about water conditions.

I have two aquariums one in the kitchen the other in the bedroom. The one in the kitchen is a 10g, 55g in the bedroom. I’ve had Pathos in both tanks for two years. Both tanks are planted and borderline overcrowded. I’ve attached the Pathos to under the cabinets, which I had prior to the plants I had installed leds for additional lighting in the kitchen. I have the one in the bedroom growing toward my window.once it reaches the window I will have it grow up and down vertically until window is full. So keep in mind while the plant is getting nutrients it will do even more if it has adequate lighting.

I put a pothos in my aquarium about a year ago. I used a long piece with established roots and planted the roots under the gravel with fertilizer tabs. Roots also grew along the stem. Recently all the leaves fell off and began re-growing under the water. So far it's doing great. Kinda weird

excellent video, good knowledge, it's great for nitrate, its a easy mistake to think a regular filter will reduce nitrate, they wont they will convert ammonia and nitrite to nitrate, doesn't matter how big or how much filtration you have, none of the filters will get rid of nitrate unless specific media inside for this job, water changes are the number one way to reduce your nitrates, its the most annoying part of the hobby especially if you have 8 tanks haha, but its part of keeping things on track.. Pothos is i'd say the number one natural way to reduce nitrate but careful in a planted tank as you may find that the pothos uses so much your other delicate plants will suffer, so keep your eyes on it :) i recently got a pothos planter sump going and its reduced the levels dramatically.

I use it in my Female Betta tank. She has a bigger tank than my Male Bettas but in just a week her water was BROWN. I did not understand because she is smaller than the boys and more water. So I took my pothos and planted it in her tank. She absolutely loves it and brown water is no more and it has been two weeks. I just did a water change yesterday because it was time and the was was CLEAR. Pothis are amazing. I recommend! One thing I started doing is taking the water from the Male Betta tanks that I removed for a water change and use it for my new Marble Queen Pothos that my great grandmother mailed me. They recovered instantly and they are absorbing the nutrients from the water. It's a wonderful way to give them nutrients without any chemical fettilizers and also lowers the amount of wasted water because you are reusing the fish's "dirty" water to feed your pothos. :)

I have a cichlid aquarium. How would the pothos plant work with the chemistry being a bit different than other type of fresh water aquariums?

Hi Sheila.. I love this.. I intend on doing this for some of my tanks. My concern I don't think they will have enough light so I'll need to rig up lights above them. I have some plants by my windows and I know they don't require full sunlight so I may give it a try before I hang lights. Great video.. Have a great weekend!!

Thank Deb, I'd give it a try first, where I have my plant is very low light and it grows really well. Enjoy your weekend too!

Sweet potatoe also is amazing in the aquarium, the roots are nice and long, just make a little plastic holder so that the potatoe barely touches the water and boom...it will root like crazy for a long long time and the fish love it and they won't get sick if they take a little nibble...try it😍 there is also a 3D printer holder for sweet potatoe.

Cool video, we're growing Hardy orchids in our fancy goldfish tank. I also run an active bog filter on the pond for the same reason, great at sucking nitrates out of the water column. Have you ever used the biohome medias? They take forever to get going but work great once they're fully cycled!
@Lifewithpets72
@Lifewithpets72 6 лет назад
Yes, the media in the tank is the generic version. It did a great job in the tank but you're right it took a long time to fully work.

Yes, I cut the roots back and it didn't make any difference to the plant.

The pothes plant can be grown in a vase with rocks and water, to use in tank I took off all the leaves and put the stem in the bottom of tank and new leaves will grow under water and not rot
@sulabhascreations180
@sulabhascreations180 5 лет назад
Please change the water at least once every week so that the plants get fresh nutrients, and also clean the bottle or vase before changing the water. A bit of charcoal can be added to bottled waterplants to keep the water sweet, is what I had read.
@HRTsAFyre
@HRTsAFyre 5 лет назад
Wow! Really. I was told they never grow new leaves on the empty stems. How about growing out of water in the soil? Can you bury them while still attached to the mother plantfor them to sprout new roots and leaves?
