How To Use A Single Cat5 Cable For Both Phone and Ethernet

In this video I revisit my most popular blog post at www.mavromatic.com. It seems like many homes only have a single CAT5 cable run to a location. That has meant that location can only serve one network or a single phone connection.
With the method shown in this video, now you can have both. The only caveat is that this will derate the potential max speed of up to 1000Mbps (Gigabit) down to 100Mbps. For most applications 100Mbps is more than enough but if you have a Gigabit switch use discretion.
Hope you enjoy this video and please support me by subscribing to my channel and liking this video.

Thanks for posting this -- I'm moving my DSL line down in my basement where evey thing else is ...the builders put it up in the ceiling running with WIRES and my signal keeps dropping ... SO, I ran NEW lines - I needed to know how to hook these up. I do not have a home phone - so -- this is a informative video !!!

Powerline network or wireless backhaul. You can also bury CAT whatever or even fiber depending on the run. I don't know your needs but I'd _try_ powerline first. Wireless backhaul would be a very distant last resort for me, but could be just the ticket for you. One example (I've used an older version successfully): www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/powerline/tl-pa9020p-kit/ They also have models with an access point or wifi extender built in. Never used those though. Oh. Forgot. Performance or whether or not they will even work at all is dictated by your wiring. I've had adjacent plugs not see each other & I've also had one instance of being able to share internet with the neighbors. The various manufacturers give you an idea of scenario's where they will/won't work, but I've found you just have to try them to find out. All of the recent ones have security & encryption so you can set up separate networks/links & also to keep neighbor's off your network if the signal does indeed make it that far. Separate network use scenario: I was already using AV1200 powerline for a situation like yours when I switched from DSL to cable. Satellite was occupying existing coax & the A-holes refused to pull some new coax on what was a very easy run & couldn't have put the cable modem in a worse location if they tried compared to where I needed it for my WiFi router. I couldn't do it myself b/c I had just undergone spinal fusion so I picked up two additional single port AV1200 powerline adapters, "locked" them together, and used that as my modem/router uplink. But powerline bandwidth is shared & you have no say in how it's split beyond some very simple QoS settings. So it cut my original powerline link from 600Mbps to a fairly solid 225Mbps & the router uplink hovered around 200-250Mbps. Which sucked b/c I only had 60Mbps internet at the time & easily saturated the link on the LAN. But it was still a God send for me at the time, though. So anyway, yeah. Might be perfect, might be worthless, and might be just good enough for you.

@e30clew
@e30clew 5 лет назад
You do need to do that. You will otherwise get 100 Mbit instead of 1 Gbit and that doesn't cut it anymore, way too slow. There is twisted pair cables with 6 pairs inside, allowing you to split it in the end for phone and ethernet, so you only need to run one cable. Also don't do the mistake I did the first time when I laid ethernet cable next to a power cable in the same pipe, that lead to massive packet loss and 600 Mbit instead of 1 gbit... Keep them separated as far as possible to minimize interference!

even if your DSL modem is mounted beside the cable modem, you terminate with both an RJ11 and Rj45 on the same cat5 cable? how do you crimp those heads with no coax sheath? you'd need the same keystones on the other end to plug into the modems... how is this "easier"... just run another cat5 thru the wall.

Am I to understand that I can use ONE CAT5 cable for a phone AND an ethernet line at the same time?? I want to install a WiFi Mesh in my house which was wired 20 years ago with a single CAT5 cable to each room. I would like to use the CAT5 line to "backhaul" my satellite nodes to the main node in a couple rooms but I have a dial tone on every line. Is this possible to do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@karlkaufman2659
@karlkaufman2659 2 года назад
Decide whether you really *need* the dial tone everywhere and repurpose some of the Cat5 strictly for networking. As the video highlights (Inthink), running both gives you only 4 wires for Ethernet, so the line will be limited to Fast Ethernet’s 100 Mbps; dedicating all 8 wires of the line to Ethernet should get you 1000 Mbps.

Yes, I’m looking for the same external/adapter alternative for quickly altering the purpose of a given line without rewiring the cable, already terminated on both ends to TJ45 jacks using the T558A standard. I’ve found a few options on Amazon: * www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B09MHX1VLT/ * www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08L21DYWP/ Would love to see a combo phone/FastE adapter, but that’s probably too specific. Can probably find the parts to DIY it, though it likely won’t be as clean as a manufactured item.

@Mavromatic
@Mavromatic 6 лет назад
Hi! you just need a simple switch to take 1 cat 5 line and connect up to 4 other devices, something like this: amzn.to/2wzEF6O -- there are more expensive switches but for home use something like this should be fine.

what color do i use to separate phone and fax.....cat5e
@Mavromatic
@Mavromatic 4 года назад
Hi! phone and fax use the same POTS (Plain old telephone service) so they only need 1 pair per line. So phone/fax would work as I have it in the video if it shares the same phone line (e.g. line 1). That said, some setups use 2 lines, one for fax and one for phone. If that is the case, you use 2 pairs as I have also shown. Let me know if that helps clarify things... @4:41 I show the wire coloring for line 1 and line 2. Also, depending on the fax machine, it can select which line it uses (1 vs 2)

Is it possible to run both gigabit ethernet and telephone line over a single cat5 8 core cable? I just realized that in any network interface (10m, 100m, 1000m), there is a transformer sit between the internal circuit and twisted pairs(8 wires), any given pair should be electrically isolated from other pairs, so can we run another signal across them(4 twisted pairs used as 4 wires to carry the phone signal)?
@e30clew
@e30clew 5 лет назад
No, but you can get a 12 core (6 pair) cable to run, so you could have 1 gbit and phone! And use CAT 6, isnt much more expensive nowadays.

if you wired as labelled in your diagram with red matching white/blue and green matching blue it isn't going to work.. red=ring green=tip blue=ring white/blue=tip = line 1.. black= tip yellow= ring , wite/brown=tip brown=ring.. the 6pin connector has 3 pairs and the colour coding excludes brown as brown is the 4th pair. It allows fpr 3 phone lines.. The ouyermost being line 3 = pin 1,6 line 2= pin 2,5 line 1= pin 3,4 line 1 is always red and green which goes on the innermost pins= pin 3 and 4.. red= ring = blue = pin 3 and green= tip= white/blue= pin 4
@karlkaufman2659
@karlkaufman2659 2 года назад
I think what you’re saying applies to using a Cat5e+ line wired to T568A for a phone connection. The video really only adheres to the standard for the Fast Ethernet RJ45 connection; as explained, for the phone jack, the brown wires are connected per the orange color mappings on the RJ11/RJ25 jack.

@Mavromatic
@Mavromatic 6 лет назад
Hi! That typically isn't an issue given the design of the cable (twisted pairs, google it for more details) resists noise. As one commenter noted, it's better to keep the twists tighter to the connection -- that provides better noise/signal integrity.

1. Use CAT 6, barely any difference in cost. 2. 100 mbit is way to slow, wifi is faster than that nowadays. 10 gbit via ethernet cable is getting to the point where its feasible to buy for your home network. I run a used 10 gbit switch and network cards from ebay for a couple of hundred of dollars in total via regular CAT 6 cables, works fine. The longest cable is 30m and it maxes out at about 800mbit. Normal UTP CAT6, nothing fancy. 3. If you have a single cable now, it's probably put in pipes inside the wall which makes it easy to pull though an extra. 4. There exists twisted pair cables with everything from 2 to hundreds of pairs, if you only can fit one cable, run one with fe. 12 cables (6 pairs) and split it in the end to ethernet and phone. 5. Who the heck even uses landline phones or faxes anymore?
