Here's everything you need to know about UK Railcards and why you need one! As an expat in the UK, I've saved so much money on train tickets with my railcard - I just wish someone told me about them sooner!
Just make sure to check out the conditions of the railcard you're interested in - you can't always get discounts on every type of ticket - but I 100% recommend getting a railcard!

Really nice video. I was in the UK for 12 days in October and am heading back this September. I wish I would have had a railcards on the previous trip. Easily worth the investment if you make a long train ride or 2. Thanks for the info and the well laid out video.

The fact you have to pay £30/70 for a railcard, but then pays off. And keep in mind that non UK credit cards may charge additional fees so this may also be useful (unless you can change the currency). I book via a train operating company (TOC): mostly via EMR or Greater Anglia

Thank you so much for the step by step guide Alanna! I couldn't figure out how to buy train tickets using my railcard. (I thought you could store the tickets to the railcard itself.. like an oyster card) Quick questions, would you know if there are real savings if buying tickets in advance? How far advanced does it need to be? Would there be a difference buying tickets the day before your travel versus buying on the spot?

Thank you so much! ☺️ In terms of buying train tickets, I would say it depends on when in the day you're travelling. Usually for me, I buy "Off-Peak Day Return" or "Super Off-Peak Day Return" tickets because I don't travel during morning rush hour and I don't often have a set time I need to travel - so these tickets are good for any train that is off-peak that day and they're good value. Sometimes buying single tickets a few weeks in advance can be a bit cheaper, but you're stuck with that train only (ex. a single train ticket there and a single back could be £5 each when bought 2 weeks early, but an Off-Peak return is £11 and you can travel on any train). Hope that makes sense!

Please help me out, I heard about railcards for the first time today on an ig video, ill be relocating real soon so this is very helpful for me. Can I buy it while outside the UK? so that on arrival I can begin using it at the train station? Also, where do you advise I buy? On Trainline or National rail? Do I get my card immediately, I'm aware both websites(national railway & trainline say its digital)? Thank you.

Can the railcard (26-30) be linked with oyster for using TFL? I don’t visit London very often but curious to know if only the network card can be linked?

Hey! If you want to use a Railcard when buying a train ticket, you need to already have the railcard. However you can buy train tickets WITHOUT a Railcard, it just means you won't get a discount.

Hi i bought my railcard on national rail but can’t figure out how to apply it to trainline. Trainline is asking me to get a whole new card

Hey! When you check-out on Trainline, just include that you have a Railcard. It doesn't need to be stored in Trainline to be valid. Only Railcards bought from Trainline can be stored in the app. For instance, if I buy my tickets from the Southeastern App, I include that I have a Railcard but it's still stored on Trainline. Hope that makes sense!

Your Railcard doesn't contain any train tickets so you need to buy tickets separately and before travel.

Most railcards are digital so you can't sign them. If you have a physical one, then you should just sign your name.

Hi there! You follow the prompts to buy a ticket, but make sure to "add a railcard" when selecting a ticket - you'll need to select which railcard you have usually from a dropdown list. It will automatically apply the necessary discount

Hey! ☺️ My railcard is digital (applied for online, once approved it's saved to my phone) My usual train stations don't have QR Code readers for tickets yet, so I still print them off at the station (buy them ahead of time on my phone tho!)

On most routes etickets are available, and if the e-ticket option is shown when you buy your ticket then you can use it on your phone. If it's not available then you select the option to collect at the station and then you insert the card you paid for the ticket with and enter the collection code to pick up your ticket from the machine

No - when you buy coach tickets, there won't be an option to "apply a Rail Card". These are only available for the trains.

Hey! You can apply your Rail Card every time you buy a train ticket - it's not always going to give you a discount based on what the card is, but you can apply it every time you purchase tickets.

Hi! The Network Railcard for solo travel (www.network-railcard.co.uk) and the Two Together Railcard for couples travel (www.twotogether-railcard.co.uk) don't have age restrictions
