Without question the most thorough discussion on acrylic paint in general. Then u go into all the constituents that make up a paint. I'm a pharmacist by profession. I thought I was back in school. What a clear, easy-to-understand video about the acrylics and media and the "why" behind different methods. Makes it a lot more enjoyable when using them, knowing what is behind the different things we do with our paint! I love Heritage because it is so trustworthy, and have progressed a long way to replace my former brands. Acrylics have a bad reputation among some oil painters, because they don't understand about the really good ones. I like to oil paint, but I will always go back to Heritage, because of its limitless possibilities, plus the advantage, of course, of faster drying (if desired!)

Someone on another video commented on this video so I brought your video up and boy am I glad I did! Like you I was an oil painter many years ago and when I switched to acrylics I very badly wanted them to behave like oils. I got pretty close by painting very quickly and learning how to blend them, but it wasn't the same. I bought slow dry mediums, but they didn't seem to make much of a difference. I realized watching this video that I had bought a jar of open medium that you showed here so I will definitely dig it out a put it to use. THANK YOU for the info in this video!!!!

Hello, David. This is some masterful teaching, my friend. You never disappoint. For me, keeping the JansenArt acrylics in the little containers with lids and globalizing them with Extender Medium seems to be best as I'm learning (because I'm still sooooo slow -- hahahaha). I transfer the paint I need to a 12 x 16 disposable palette with the painting knife. Adding the extender and/or open medium (and sometimes a little spritz of water) gives me all the time I need to work on a rose painting. This system you've designed is nothing short of genius -- incredibly flexible -- which is exactly what you demonstrate in this video. One more thing -- I have to say I smiled when you talked about the drying times of the various pigments. When I first put the paints into those little containers -- I started calling them names -- for instance, "Naughty Hansa" -- because she tightened up so quickly -- just wouldn't stay nice like the others. (She just needed more extender than the others.) And Phthalo Blue is always a "Good Boy" because he never gives me any trouble. It sounds silly, but I talk to my paints like kids when I stir them. We depend on the paints so much, it gets personal. I've found that maintaining them properly in their little pots is an important part of the process. Enough blathering for today. You are such a great teacher. If you excuse the pun, I was glued to the screen! So crucial to understand what you are working with I always notice how buttery your paint is when it hits your canvas. I like to work with thick paint, and also follow your methods of thinning the darks then working the thick on top thanks so much

Really enjoyed your explanation on acrylics. I had started out tole painting decorative arts . Have since gotten way from craft painting and do fine art of the old masters in oil , pastel Have been thinking of getting my Golden open acrylics.. out from a few years slumber. How are your acrylics Matt or glossy I find some different acrylics are not same in sheen .. I like to see the color range not shift I was hoping you would address that . Maybe next time . I personally vote for strokes & blending helpful hints are always needed . Great video.

Excellent explanation of how the acrylic paints work. This is the kind of thing I love learning about. I tried mixing the "global" paints when I first started with Heritage paints a couple of years ago. I liked the result but I found I don't have the patience to make the mixtures. Your demonstration of all the options is very helpful. I was toying with the idea of getting some of the thickener but have hesitated because I had no clue how to use it. Now I do and want to give the "extender/thickener" gel a try. Can you recommend proportions when mixing a larger amount? In reality though, I've become a big fan of Heritage paints and, more and more, enjoy the "acrylic" method as you say you do. Your paints were my first step into professional grade acrylic paints and I'm hooked! Thank you David for your always informative and entertaining videos!

I would love to see more videos of techniques! I’m always trying to paint fast bc I have little ones who don’t give me a lot of time to go slowly. I have the different mediums to work with, but I’m always asking myself if it’s worth slowing the dry time. If you do a technique video can you please explain why you are choosing to use the open medium vs solvent technique in a given situation?

I've been painting for a little over a year. In my beginners' excitement , I purchased a lot of Liquitex acrylic paint. I wish I had paused long enough to research the importance of quality paint. I'm too frugal to throw it away, but will eventually replace it with your brand.
