Not sure if this is in the same category but I just learned an important tip about hyaluronic acid. It must be applied to clean MOIST skin for maximum benefits. Thought I would share for anyone else using it in their skin care regimen.
I'm a glycolic guy, myself: lactic technically suits my dry skin even better, but I don't care for the way it smells at higher concentrations, and I like the idea of glycolic molecules possibly getting even deeper into my skin. Ever since bumping up from retinol to tretinoin, however, I'm finding that I rarely need to use AHAs anymore: maybe once per week, I'll put a few drops over my vitamin C serum for a boost, but it's really not the workhorse of my routine (tret gets that designation 😁).
Would love to see a similar video for BHAs please! I use an Azelaic acid in morning and a retinoid at night but I still have blackheads on my chin and nose. Find Glycolic too irritating.
I tend to use AHA at night with a good moisturizer over it- and in the morning, my skin looks amazing. I do use Retinal 2x’s a week, and AHA about 3/4 nights a week - thanks for this video-always good to hear different perspectives.
Doctors are regulated and can’t give anything that could be seen to be individual advice. I’m guessing the questions feed into future videos or people can book an appointment
I've talked about this ad nauseum, but The Ordinary lactic acid serum is to die for! I've used both the 5% and 10%, even on my neck, without any problems. I had never thought to use them in the morning, though. Might try that!
Hi Clementine, I just bought aha 20% high potency glycolic cream by Neostrata on Amazon cos we don't have 20% in Canada, hope it's authentic. My question is how long did you used it, how often and day or night time? Would appreciate ur reply..
@@anjelica6497 hi Angelica. I either keep it on my skin for 6-8 hours if I know I’m going to be home most of the day or I skip my nighttime routine and just use my cream that contains the 20% glycolic acid in it. After a couple of weeks, my skin felt and looked so much smoother. I couldn’t believe it. I also use Viramin C, peptides, Vitamin A, and niacinimide but the glycolic acid made the biggest difference. Btw, I’m 57 and my profile pic has zero filters nor am I wearing foundation.
I switched the neostrata serumgel that contains aha to dr Sam azelaic acid because my skin was irritated by wearing mask all the time and it has suited me beautifully
Hi Dr. Sam! Thank you for your great video as usual! Question: would you suggest that Obagi product to a sensitive skin (a Celtic one ... ;-) ) and if yes would you place its complete designation on the video's description please? Thank you! :-) xx
That's a myth that keeps getting perpetuated and it's wrong. You can use gentle aha's whenever; it's just very important to use an high spf to protect the skin daily.
This is so enlightening , thank you Dr Sam. I tend to not combine separate aha with a vitamin C serum except it is formulated together in a single product.. so glad to see this and I’ll try the Obagi you recommended
I like lactic acid because it's less irritating, give my skin the radiant and make my skin less dry. It's hard to find moisturiser with lactic acid but I found it in Fade out cream made in the UK. It's really good for my skin.
Hey dr sam, I’d love to see a video on post-isotrerinoin skincare. I’m on my last few weeks of treatment, and I’m planning on very very slowly incorporating a retinoid. I’m curious on your thoughts between tretinoin or adapalene, or if you have an opinion one way or the other? And if you recommend incorporating any other active ingredients as well!
I'm happy I discovered your channel. I always learn from you. I'm experienced tretinoin user (I use prescription tretinoin 0.1% every night during the past 6 years and can tolerate it very well now). I want to incorporate glycolic acid into my skin care routine. Recently I started to use glycolic acid cream 20% from Neostrata (resurface high potency cream) once a week (I don't apply tretinoin on that day)). It tingles a little bit for the few first seconds. Can I use glycolic acid cream together with tretinoin if I can tolerate both well? If so, what should I apply first? I also have another question. I'm planning to do glycolic acid peel 70% and need to stop to use tretinoin 2 weeks before the peel and also between peels (there will be 4 weekly sessions in total). I thought to use bakuchiol during that time. Can I use bakuchiol and glycolic acid cream 20% on alternate nights during this time? thank yuo in advance!
Thank you, Dr. Sam, for the helpful video. I have a question for you. I'm 57 years old and (untreated) have (among other things) slightly congested pores, with an occasional breakout. I've used Alpha Skin Care Active Renewal Serum (14% glycolic acid) for exfoliation, with excellent result. It's dramatically improved the texture of my skin. In attempting to address the congestion, I've used Paula's Choice 2% salicylic acid. Since these are both acids, I apply the glycolic first (all over my face) and then the salicylic on (primarily) my T-zone. Based on your comments, in the video, might there be a different approach that might be good for me to consider? I also have some pigmentation (i.e. sun damage) and, of course, wrinkles. ☹️ I've thought about trying to add Vitamin C and/or azelaic acid into my routine (I've watched your other videos) but am not sure how to put together an effective & efficient morning routine for myself. Any suggestions? BTW, when I was in my 20s, I had Grade 4 cystic acne, which I and doctors battled for years. When Accutane got FDA approval, I went on it. It was a miracle drug for me & effectively ended my serious battle with acne. Now (untreated) I just have the occasional breakout, some pore congestion, texture issues, pigmentation and, of course, wrinkles. At night, I use a niacinamide lotion (i.e. CeraVe PM) & then put on a retinoid. Thanks, again, for this video (and your many helpful videos)! 😊 😍
Sam, are you familiar with Olay regenerist micro sculpting cream ? Do you know - does product contain ingredients that could cause breakouts? Use fragrance free. Very sensitive, slight, mild rosacea. Occasionally use this product I think it’s culprit for Flare ups. Please could you recommend a good moisturizer for mature skin, I’m 69 w dry sensitive, fair skin, I need good hydration? I use a BHA periodically, no problem. 💗 Your channel, great content. Thanks! California 🏝☀️
Wouldn’t you use the aha first? I thought it was best to lower ph with bha or aha first then apply vitamin c to increase its effectiveness. I’m confused. Or did you do that just because of the different liquid / cream?
You technically apply your bha or aha first then you vitamin c serum for; some people like to put their most "important" active closest to their skin. It's sort of personal preference, to be quite honest. You could even wash your face with an aha face wash to lower you skin's pH before applying your vitamin c serum as well. I personally do have a preference to lower my skin's pH first but I don't have sensitivity isssues, if one does, it may be best not to.
If you are using Mad Hippie Vitamin C serum (SAP), should it still used before either Azelaic or AHA serum? Is it a question of ph levels? With thanks!
Wait. Did you just say use vitamin c right BEFORE using an AHA?? I always thought you should not do that. I use my AHA on alternate days that I don't use my vitamin c.
I’m honestly so confused about using AHA’s in the morning. Most places I’ve researched suggest using acids only in the evening. I’m having a hard time fitting in at night because I use retinoids. Maybe I can try this approach
It's a myth that keeps getting perpetuated by people who don't know what they're talking about and it's wrong. Gentle aha's can be used morning or night; it's just important, of course, to use a high spf daily. I've been an aesthetician for over 20 years and I've heard this from so many people- false info. spreads quickly, especially on the internet.
Thank you so much for your replies!! I’m going to try with gentle AHA in the mornings. I use sunscreen every day regardless so I think it will be a good addition to my routine
Hi my skin is sensitive, oily and flaky!!! Plus I use Differin which of course exacerbates the peeling and sensitivity! I really don’t like the flakiness and the Differin doesn’t seem to be doing much else right now, been using it for approx a month! I have also developed what looks like sebaceous filaments on my flaky, oily nose too!!! In short my skin is a mess! I can’t afford to see a derma doc! Can you please suggest anything? I’d love to try AHA’s BHA’s but I’m scared it will increase my troubles due to my Differin use!!
Quick question doc, how many times a year should I do a hydrafacial...my skin isn't problematic I just always wanted to do a professional treatment and see if it betters my skin in anyway. Don't wanna go over board and do too much
Thank you for the video! I once saw a video where an aesthetician applied a mandelic acid peeling and then a glycolic acid peeling on top to ensure deeper penetration because mandelic acid is more oil-soluble. Does it makes sense to use two AHAs in combination?
any product recommendations to get rid of acne marks on back, chest, and shoulders???im so insecure about it and i can’t wear cute clothes and tank tops :(
Thanks for this. I had used a liquid AHA but had stopped as wasn’t sure where it fitted with Nightly/Brightly. If I wanted to reintroduce would it be before Brightly (although that means after Vitamin C) as it’s liquid?
