In case your heat pump isn't working correctly, you can select to always use alt heat.
This video introduces 2 method to force alt heat to turn on.
1. In test mode. (alt/EM heat will automatically turn off when reaching set temperature)
2. Always use alt heat. (alt/EM heat will always run instead of the heat pump)

Your video saved my bacon, as the saying goes. I'm having a heat pump problem also. That "alt heat" setting was very useful. Thank you!

Thank you! This was a huge help to me so I could test to make sure my furnace and heat pump weren’t running at the same time.

FYI, same can be done via the Nest app which I was able to find on my own after messing around with the thermostat. Good to know it can be done in both places. My HVAC guy said there should be a "drip setting" or "time out" setting that would automatically call for alt heat if the unit runs for a period of time (usually 15 minutes) without progressing up to the set temperature but I haven't found that....seems like it would be a good idea to avoid a cold house if your compressor fails overnight like it did in my case.

Thank you I had to pro set mine. The aUx heat source was set to gas. I changed it to electric and did your steps. My compressor is bad, so this will get me through. The way I see it this will save me money, because my outside unit is continuously running, but now the aux heat gets my temp to 68 and kicks off. I hope this will help someone.

Thank you!! I’ve been freezing my buns off for 3 days trying to figure out how to turn on aux heat as we’ve been in negative temperatures and the heat pump is dependably useless in this weather. Nothing like cold blowing air inside in the winter 🥶🤪. Sleeping warm tonight tho!! 😁

Regular thermostat has a knob or button that turns on aux heat. But aux option for nest is buried in the features. Glad this video helped!

Good info for aux heat to possibly work! This thermostat wont configure for heat pump!? I’m gonna get with owner & try using their remote & internet connection! It won’t configure with jus field adjustments on the thermostat! NEST GOT TOO MANY BRIDGES TO CROSS FOR A SIMPLE CHANGE OVER! It’s wired correctly for a heat pump but won’t switch the thermostat over internally!😢

I have an oil furnace with baseboard heating and I will be installing heat pumps in the house will a nest work for me?

I can't speak to your specific system. But as for Nest - it is a pretty versatile product that can replace pretty much any standard thermostat.
@DrewHVAC
@DrewHVAC Год назад
towards the end of the video you said the nest people don’t recommend doing this , as you changed setting to “always use alternative heat” , Why don’t they recommend doing this?
@FlameMing
@FlameMing Год назад
Because it's not energy efficient to "always use alt". That's all.
@willyamisaac
@willyamisaac 10 месяцев назад
@@FlameMingunless your alt heat is gas. Then it’s often more efficient and definitely more effective. Especially if it’s a condensing gas furnace

How do i change it back to normal ? Mine is set on alt heat for some reason
@FlameMing
@FlameMing 2 года назад
start watching the video at 1:40. it shows you can set a temperature or "always use alt heat". Try setting the temperature to a lower number so the alt heat will turn off. Keep in mind the "normal" heat(AKA heat pump) will not work as well the lower the temps
@vohung08
@vohung08 5 лет назад
Is this the same as turning on emergency heat?
@FlameMing
@FlameMing 5 лет назад
Most times Yes. Usually a heat pump/AC system is accompanied with an alternative source of heat, AKA Emergency heat on some thermostat. Nest just happen to call it Alt heat. Depending on the system, i find it's the best to just turn off the heat pump (the outside unit with the fan) and ONLY use Alt heat when it gets below freezing. Because the lower the outside temp, the less efficient heat pumps are. You could keep the heat pump on for couple hours and you barely see any indoor temp increase. Alt/EM heat can heat up the house much faster. But keep in mind, alt/EM heat takes more power to run, so make sure you monitor your utility bills.

I'm just learning about heat pumps with just moving in a gated community that only has heat pumps. I've been told to only use the event emergency/auxiliary heat if your heat pump isn't working and to call someone out for repair. I live in The Chicago area and in my opinion they don't work well in this climate that our Winters are too bad for heat pumps to actually work (in my opinion). Our heat exchanger went bad and by the time it got ordered came in and with extreme weather that came in that our electric bill was just under $500.00 for the month and we were keeping our thermostat at 65° during the day when no one was home to try and control our electric bill...
@FlameMing
@FlameMing 5 лет назад
@@joetarlos Agree. Chicago did get hit hard for a few days this winter, I could see heat pump being completely useless during these days. I am in Northeast Ohio, I keep my nest at 65F while away as well. I live in an all electric 1500SQFT townhouse, My electric bill usually runs about $280 a month in the Dec, Jan, Feb using 100% alt heat. In comparison, when I have heat pump on, bill is ~$200, but the house barely heats. I do have 1970s windows. Doing upgrades on all 5 patio doors + 3 windows this spring, hopefully will see a difference next winter.
@joetarlos
@joetarlos 5 лет назад
@@FlameMing I don't know why you would want to program your Nest thermostat to always for your emergency heat, your electric bill would be extremely high for trying to heat your home on the emergency setting. You'd be better off setting the temperature on The Nest thermostat where your heat pump would kick on if the outside air warmed up to what your setting was set on your Nest thermostat.
@FlameMing
@FlameMing 5 лет назад
@@joetarlos Yeah, Normally I would let it kick on above 32F. but I am running low on refrigerant. Waiting to get charged up in the spring.

Thanks for the response. Can't figure out why my aux heat & or emer heat isn't working with my nest. It's connected in the same location. Thinking it might be something with the handler itself.

I'll go into equipment, test ... test everything, all will work - but as soon as I do the aux heat test everything goes off and nothing comes on. No idea.
