You can test a helmet using your tv remote infrared light. Just hold remote close to the lens sensors and push any button and the lens will darken if it working.

10-20 minutes is a standard youtube length for a second ad for monetized channels. So that's why you often get a 3 minute topic spread out with filler. so it's partly by design for those wasting our time, but like you I am very glad for a simple camera-in-helmet experience in less than 5 min.

I'm new to welding and just going to keep it for simple projects. I bought an auto darkening helmet. The first thing I did is forget that the switch was on grind mode so it didn't darken. There's a sensitivity mode and delay mode. If I set the sensitivity mode to the max, it should react to arcs that aren't as bright, correct? If I set the delay to the max does that keep it in dark mode longer after the arc has ended or delay it from coming on sooner? I'm thinking it should keep it in dark mode longer. I was amazed how dark a regular mask is and how you can't really see anything. The auto darkening seems to be a good option, if the darkening mode is on and set to the right number or higher.

Excellent guide. I bought one of these and could virtually see nothing when I started welding, to the point I couldn't really see what I was doing - dangerous too! Surely not right. Plus perhaps the room (garage) is too dark and needs more lighting?

Great video and nicely explained .In my case ,my helmet is solar powered and I haven't used it for 2 years stored indoors.It darkens when welding but not as before or as in your video ,so I placed it outside to charge .If it doesn't,then have to buy a new one,I guess.Do you recommend solar or battery powered?

I’ve got a bossweld helmet and it has a lithium button battery and solar to keep it charged up. Can replace the battery when needed. It’s an X-Sight series helmet with an MR1 auto darkening lens.
@Mike_Ehrmantraut.
@Mike_Ehrmantraut. 10 месяцев назад
The solar panels don't charge the battery, they power the darkening feature with the light emitted from the arc. The battery is just to power the electronics that control your sensitivity and delay.

What are some ways to deal with attention to detail during the "dark mode" , sorry for the probably silly description of that but I'm getting into welding now and not quite sure on all my terminologies. For instance if you have to make a tight corner or for irregular gap welds (not straight)?

I was trying to check my welding helmet to see if it still works because it hasn't been used in about a year, it's about 3 years old, and I thought I'd point an LED flashlight directly at it and turn it on but it didn't work so I looked up different ways to check them and one of them said to flick on a lighter which worked. I'm confused on why the lighter worked but the flashlight didn't, the flashlight is much brighter.
@dbe_manny
@dbe_manny 11 месяцев назад
Both welding and fire from a lighter produce infrared light and trigger the helmet. Most flashlights only produce visible spectrum light which doesn't. One common exception is a TV remote's IR LED.

@MrAdkinsAuto
@MrAdkinsAuto 3 года назад
Do NOT store it in the dark or it will be dead next time you use it. I learned the hard way after storing them in a closet one summer. I store mine on a wall facing a window and no longer have issues. Over long holiday breaks (winter and spring break), I store them in the back of my lab cars facing the sun. Batteries are lasting much longer now. I suspect welding light does not charge them as it is a brief burst of light. I might be wrong though.

@HaxNotice
@HaxNotice Год назад
Make sure your helmet is set to welding and not grinding or cutting. It will only auto darken on the welding setting. Adjust the dial on the helmet to make it darker, and you may have a sensitivity dial as well. Lastly, some helmets have a test button that you can press that will show the helmet darken before trying it with a live arc. If you're welding in the dark, it might be possible that your eyes will be more sensitive during welding because they are more dilated, but your helmet should definitely be checked.

@MrAdkinsAuto
@MrAdkinsAuto 3 года назад
The helmet needs to be directly viewing the arc for the helmet to go dark. If someone is standing in front of you or your hand blocks the arc flash, the helmet may flicker on and off. The helmet may also flicker if you are struggling to weld a good bead and the welder is flashing and popping a lot. If none of these things are true, then the helmet might need new batteries or be going bad. Talk to your instructor.

Flash you. If it's delaying or darkening then flickers off. Check the battery or replace it altogether. I've been in mid-welds before and my helmets battery started going dead. It would darken as it should then out of nowhere the lense would switch back. Even if you have to buy another it's cool. $100 isn't worth messing up your eye sight.
