Awesome stuff, been driving 28 years and always had manual cars. I’m Picking up my first BMW Automatic tomorrow and was panicking a bit, I feel a bit better now after watching this 😀

When you move the transmission to the left into S/M it is still automatic, but with gear switches that happen in a higher (sportier) rev range. On your dash you will see it changing from D to S1, S2, etc depending on what gear the transmission is in. Then when you start using the paddles, it will switch to manual, with gears denoted by M1, M2, etc.
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars 5 месяцев назад
Yes it is exactly as you describe it. The sportier engine revs are first noticed as the car changes down a gear often but remains an automatic until you use the paddles.

Hello, I know your videos are-year-old but I’m looking at one to buy. I never had a clue how these things work till the weather BMWs, but I haven’t had one like this. Thank you very much indeed for explaining in such a comprehensive way how they stand ColorWorks, I’m told never to buy one because there’s nothing but trouble, but I just like him and thank you again Eddie.😮

Should I release the accelerator pedal when I shift gears or not.. Will it cause any damage if I do not release the accelerator..
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars 2 года назад
Good question, the cars throttle position is adjusted by the cars computer so there is no need for you to release the accelerator. The gear shifts up or down are reasonably smooth without you needing to adjust the pedal position.

Can you have individual mode where you keep sport dials but comfort driving?
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars 2 года назад
Good question, you can personalise the sport mode and choose some comfort settings.

Might be an obvious answer, but how well to the paddles work when you need to downshift while turning ? Would you just switch back to automatic if the situation requires?
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars Год назад
You can easily switch back to auto but the paddles work whilst turning too. They are long so easy to find and move with the steering wheel.
@customboatscreensolutions5893
In flappy paddle mode will the car automatically gear down on its own accord when slowing down?? Or does the driver need to down shift
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars Год назад
Good question, the car will change gear to avoid stalling when slowing down and it will avoid over revving when speeding up. The computer will always have the final decision on a gear change.

What phone/camera mount do you use? Would love to make some content with my 320i and that’s a great angle
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars Год назад
I use amzn.to/3X5AV7E and a normal screen mounting phone holder. I have put go pro mounts onto these also. Nothing special needed to get started. If you are in the North Kent area of the UK then stop by for a chat sometime.

Is Steptronic electronically controlled? I’ve heard bad things about electronic clutches.
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars 7 месяцев назад
Everything is electronic on this car but thankfully put together by Germans. No problems so far but I also have a 1935 Austin and love the simplicity of it.

Great video, thank you. I'm buying a G20 3 series soon. I live in the country and drive on roads like this very often - I will probably be driving in manual mode all of the time. Do you need to put it in park when stationary in steady moving traffic?
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars Год назад
Awesome car, you will enjoy using the manual mode on those roads. I have grown lazy and just let the car do it most of the time now but maybe that’s typical for a 5 series old man owner. I don’t use Park in slow traffic. I use the electronic handbrake and leave it in D. You could also use Auto Hold as shown in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6XHfLD-ZKzk.html which my wife prefers. Either way makes use of the Stop/Start but I switch that off if I’m only stopping for a couple of seconds.

@@ChimpOnCars Great, thank you for the reply. Driving a brand new automatic car will be completely new to me so I'm a bit nervous to be honest, but at least I won't stall it!
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars Год назад
Definitely won’t stall it! Most people can adjust easily but you will find yourself going for the clutch occasionally. Enjoy it, it’s a great drivers car.

Do you prefer BMW 5 Series or Audi A6?
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars 4 месяца назад
I chose the 5 series because of the driving feel and front end handling. The A6 is probably the better all round car if the interior and styling are taken into account but not much between them. Go for whichever gives the best deal maybe?

Is there an easy way to go from sports manual back to sports automatic other than flicking the selector over to the right and back over to the left?
@donciak
@donciak 8 месяцев назад
hold + lever. or + --> - lever
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars 8 месяцев назад
You can just use the paddles when in auto which puts you in manual for a short time. To go into the full sports manual you do have to move the selector stick.

We call it accelerator pedal in UK
@ChimpOnCars
@ChimpOnCars Год назад
Good point, I did until I became an instructor. It’s part of the training to use different words for things and situations and that was one of them. Try saying accelerator in a first driving lesson when you are guiding a bit more, a bit less, foot off, etc.
