How to use Chromecast with NO WIFI router (mobile hotspot required)

*UPDATE Aug 5 2017* Google Play Services 11.5.05 has supposedly fixed the problem. YMMV.
*UPDATE Jun 2017* Due to a recent update to the Google Play Services app that Google pushed to Android devices in late May/early June, the method in this video is not working for many users. Supposedly, Google is working on a fix. Will remove this message once it's confirmed that a fix is being rolled out to the majority of users.
Sorry for the lengthy video. I did this in one continuous take and really just winged it the whole way through. My sole intention with this vid is to show how to eliminate the need for a Wi-Fi router to use your Chromecast. I had trouble finding videos that did a great job of specifically pointing out all the vital steps to make that happen, so my goal was to highlight just those steps with this video. After you complete the set up, ALL YOU WILL EVER NEED FROM NOW ON IN ORDER TO USE YOUR CHROMECAST IS: YOUR PHONE, YOUR CHROMECAST, AND A TV. No WiFi (from an external source) will ever be needed again, but just please note that your phone must have mobile hotspot. Oh, and remember, you can use this method with any Chromecast, whether it is the old one, or the new one, the Chromecast 2.

Thank you soooooo much. I got rid of my wifi to safe money living in a metropolitan area, and working 12hr shift. I have been trying to utilize my hotspot/unlimited network for months now. Thank you again for helping me continue to get out of debt. Awesome video!!! 😍👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I don't have any WiFi, but I do have two cell phones. I was stumped when Google Cast asked for a WiFi password. Now I know what to do, thanks man.

This is just what I was looking out for.. wanted a tutorial where I can connect my Chromecast when I don't have working WiFi and only my mobile data.. great thing of this video is a guest mode explained which was missing in the other videos which I watched to have a solution to my problem.. I m now happy..such a great video and explained in detail.. cheers!! Thank you

Thanks for the video. Searched the internet and this is by far the best instructions on how to use your phone without Internet connection. Now I can use my chromecast.

Thanks, this is exactly what i was looking for and it worked. Just used my old phone (which has no service) and my new phone's hotspot. The only extra step i had to take was download the chromecast app on my old phone.

hello joe (: do you still reply to comments? I have a question. I understand that the secondary phone is used to activate the Chromecast but once the set up is ready.. can the device giving out the Internet connection be used as a hotspot AND be able to cast a screen on the tv at the same time or does the screen casting only available to the secondary phone? I plan on purchasing a chromecast for a family member /: please reply, I don't know who else to go to and I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this to an employee that will give me the "you can't afford wifi?" look.
