How to use decorators caulk

Decorators caulk is one of the most useful of products when decorating. It can be used to fill any gaps which cannot be filled using a regular filler. Decorators caulk is flexible, available in several colours, can be over painted after just one hour and is very easy to apply using a standard silicone/caulk gun. Once the decorators caulk has been applied it’s simply a case of smoothing over the caulk using a wet finger (preferably using a weak solution of water and liquid soap).

Great tips as usual. Caulk is wonderful stuff, it makes me sad sometimes though as I feel we've lost some skills along the way. They didn't have this in the Victorian times so their workmanship must be excellent! Also when I've plastered a room ceiling and wall I run a Stanley blade at each corner and fill with caulk. Any house moves and this little trick keep the corners from cracking, as this is a weak spot even with scrim it will crack.

+Zed Man I used to think that, but having removed some plaster from lath and plaster walls- you look at the stud work and think perhaps they were not as good as would have been expected. The tip for preventing the corners from cracking is brilliant ;-) Thanks for the comment

NIce vid..but as a DIY'er I am confused as when to use silicon, filler, or (which I have never used) caulking....
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 7 лет назад
Thanks Ian. You use decorators caulk for filling gaps that need to be flexible, such as when the plaster cracks in the corner of a room, or between the wall and ceiling. Decorators caulk is flexible and can be painted over. Silicone is used to seal in areas that could get wet such as around a bath, shower or kitchen worktop. Silicone will give a good flexible seal bit often cannot be painted over. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DKFunUIh9rc.html Filler is used to fill damage or cracks that are unlikely to move, such as a hole in a plaster wall or a crack in a plaster wall (but not in the corner, between two walls) Example here- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ANORiqAJ7kc.html I hope this helps ;-)

I use ever build once caulk great stuff they sell it in tool station, I've used most brands dulux evo stuck trade rubbish takes ages to dry and cracks depends on paint type to. a lot of people recommend geocel, but the once caulk does dry quick and i can't remember when I had a cracking issue last. remember caulk takes a while to dry when it's cold.

Been hearing some people opt for plain waters, others for soapy water or Windex and you got salt-water. Is this a personal preference thing? His caulking technique is on point - when I tend to go back up to cover up missed areas I tend to smear all over the place - think it has to do the way I am cutting the nozzle and maybe the size (always tend to cut it a tad bit smaller)
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
+Aakash Sachdev Soapy water works best for me as it lubricates your finger and prevents and caulk or silicone that is spread out from sticking to surrounding areas. Thanks for the comments ;-)

What's the difference between regular caulk vs. decorator's caulk???
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman Год назад
In Some countries, such as the USA, Caulk is actually silicone sealant- which cannot be painted over. In The UK we use silicone sealant for sealing around shower trays/windows/baths/basins etc. But we use decorators caulk to fill gaps/cracks before painting 👍

Do you have problems with the paint crazing/crackling on top of caulk? I have had nothing but trouble with this and have found the only solution is to prime the caulk with 2 coats of coverstain or similar first, bit of a pain in the arse to be honest.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
+caskwith I have not had any problems recently. I was using Crown caulk and most of the time I used either Glidden matt emulsion or Zinsser Perma white ( which I have had for about 4 years, but only just used). I have had cracking paint before but it was a long time ago using a cheap caulk and emulsion paint. Thanks for the comment ;-)

I was going to bring this question up aswell. I've found the culprit and it seems to only happen when using Dulux paint, all the other premium brands are fine. Now i hate using Dulux vynal matt and tend to recommend a crown endurance matt as having to Undercoat all my the caulk lines is just not cost effective or good method.

+Ultimate Handyman I have had that trouble too, using Wickes brand dec.filller/caulk. After painting over it with white emulsion (Crown premium white) the paint on it cracked after about a day. Why?? Is Wickes caulk no good or is it the paint? So annoying when the finish of hard work is spoilt like this.
