I have watched tons of masks videos to date. I was furloughed from my job for 10 weeks and made close to 400 masks for Goodwill Industries. I made 45 for my friend's son's wedding (in wedding colors) and I have made several for friends and family. I started sewing at age 8 and am now 62. Great video.

Jen, I just want to compliment you on how thorough you are in explaining everything. I am an ex athlete that decided to help my community out by making masks. I've never sewn a thing in my life. I now have a Singer machine and have learned the hard way via RU-vid how to sew masks. Learning how to sew with my big hands was not easy by any means; you need baby hands and fingers! I found your tutorial and just made a medium mask that came out great. I use color-coordinated coreless paracord straps I thread through poney beads for the wearer to adjust. I went step-by -step with my laptop on my desk when I sewed the mask starting and pausing your video. Like I said you are so easy to learn from. I have those clips and did not know about the color being on top. I use Pellon 931td iron-on interfacing and did not know it was easier to iron on the fabric side. You're right! I am going to use your template (I downloaded the templates, cut them out, taped them on pieces of cardboard, and used my rotary cutter to cut the 3 cardboards so I'd have sturdy templates) and make a bunch of masks for my brother's ALF for July 4th as I found some neat stars and stripes material. I like that your masks can be worn both sides. I will use red coreless paracord (I pull out the core strands myself), iron it flat, and thread it through red, white and blue poney beads to make it adjustable. I'd snap a picture of one and send it, but you can't post pictures on here. I have my own medical transcription business, and the pandemic has affected my business, so I have the time. Again, thanks for the very informative and easily understood video for this sewing neophyte. Tom from Fort Lauderdale

I made my first mask today using your medium sized template. I've been sewing for almost four months so I was looking for a simple pattern I could attempt and be successful at. Used a 1/4 presser foot and muslin for my sample piece. Tomorrow I'll make it with proper fabric. Will send one to my mom and sister and make one for my husband and myself. You are a wonderful instructor. Bless you and thank you!

Great video. I began making the pleated masks for family, friend and neighbors but found a template set from a company in Florida. Templates are the way to go if you’re going to make quite a few of them. I now make your type of mask but I cut a 5 1/2”x2” piece of fabric on the bias. I fold each end and sew then fold it lengthwise and press. This makes a small holder for wires or anything people want to use inside. I have been lining each mask with a soft, preshunk piece of flannel and the insert I sew into each mask is made of one layer of olefin. I have made over 300 masks so far and I keep getting asked for more. It’ a great way to use up my stash. I’m glad you are suggesting to people to make them from fun and beautiful fabrics.

Also make several. CDC recommends only wearing the same one for about 2 hrs because your breath creates a breeding ground for bacteria. Because i wanted the most protection i could , i sewed a pipe cleaner in the tip seam to pinch over your nose and a 3” piece if elastic, pulled tightly across the bottom seam, 1/2 on each side if center seam inside in order to fit better under chin.

I sewed many of this pattern with elastic that went around the head which works better for me. I am now trying the 3D face mask. So try different patterns. One size does not fit all♥ Happy sewing! Thanks for the tips and ideas! I really like your recommendation on sewing the elastic at an angle. It’s so brilliant, and yet I’ve not seen it on any tutorials that I saved, hahaha! For those inserting nose pieces, try using fabric glue. It’s the easiest way to anchor them in place and then you can sew around it. Also, if anyone is using Filti instead of interfacing for an added layer, DO NOT IRON the Filti! It ruins it. (I learned that the hard way.) Last, I’ve also made some for my daughter’s America Girls and they will fit 18” dolls that are similar. I cut a 4 1/2” X 3” fabric and I think 9 3/4” elastics to go around their heads. I pressed and then sewed 1/4” seam, securing the elastic at the ends, with 2 small pleats in the sides of the fabric to make it contour better around their faces (just like with human faces, lol). It took about 15-20 minutes from start to finish and it made her day! I think I might make a modified version of this for them, just to see if I can. 🤷‍♀️😁

@@lucyweir4607 I sew a little less than 1/2" of the elastic ends into the folded part of a pre-made single bias tape. Leave some empty space in the tape so that if it had to be cut and replaced it's easier. Of course do this before sewing the big casing in place, because you have to get it in there! Don't know how I know that! 🤫😳

I've made several masks of this style. For those with a removable filter, I leave the side open to turn as you did. Instead of sewing it closed I did a narrow hem on the open edges and put the filter in from the side. I sew the elastic more straight off the side and on the fabric that is going to be the side facing out, that way the elastic holds the pocket closed when wearing. I have used sew on velcro to keep the pocket closed on some.

Thank you Jen! Best pattern out there! I am an experienced sewist with an awesome (read serious) sewing machine thus making these quick to sew. I love the design - it is perfect, especially with three sizes! While not a big deal, the elastic ends can be a bit fussy to hold in place despite a plethora of clips and stilettos; so, a hack of mine is to sew across the corners at about 45 degrees before sewing up the mask. In so doing, I can zip around the entire mask with little fuss. Thank you from Canada and stay well...

Jen, you are a wonderful teacher. Your directions are clear and easy to follow for this beginner. I have made a couple of these masks with non-woven fusible interfacing and used your free download. They came out perfect! I also made many of the face masks with the pleats for which you gave RU-vid video instructions. So far I've made them for my family, including grandchildren. This fitted mask worked especially well for my son-in-law who drives a bus and wears glasses. He said he liked it best of all the masks he's tried, including store-bought masks. It doesn't fog up his glasses, which is kind of important if you're driving a bus! So thank you for your help. Stay safe!

Love the look of the mask and will try one tonight. I make rectangular masks and I find that wire helps so much over the nose. I use green plastic coated garden wire made for tying up tomato plants. I double it over and zigzag it onto the seam allowance at the top of the mask before turning it out and it gives a gentle stiffness that helps a lot with air escaping from the top of the mask.

Thankyou for this, I have made over 40 masks of the pleated type, but they are a bit claustrophobic, so I took your pattern and made a couple of adjustments, instead of pleating the ends I made some bias binding and threaded the elastic through making the recipient able to adjust it it, and as the elastic is gathered, there is no gap. So no sewing the two ends the elastic is easier to pull through.

Jen, This was tremendously helpful and you are fantastic at simplifying the process. My son was having difficulty with the rectangular masks and I was hesitant to try these "scooped" masks because they seemed more difficult and time-consuming, but you made it easy. I was cutting and sewing alongside with your video and these masks fit him so much better.
