Save your thumbs and your delicate, little baby hands as you learn how to use your lifting straps. No hook grip, no mixed grip, and you'll look super cool.

I tried this out and when I try to tighten the strap grip, the straps just slide with my hand and don't tighten up. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the belated response here. Every time you rotate your hand back toward you, it will tighten the strap a bit (because your hand will have the strap pinned in place), but you can only rotate it so far back. At this point, if the strap needs further tightening, you'll have to walk your hand "forward" while still keeping the strap pinned where it is. This is the part that takes practice (you can see me do this with my right hand at about the 1:57 mark) as you have to keep it pinned in place as you adjust your grip. You'll improve with time, and the straps will also get even grippier as you use them more often (accumulation of chalk and other grime :-)).

This is a nice tutorial but I'll always have objections to using straps. Not from some ridiculous "he-man" perspective (as in "you have to be able to do it with no added aid otherwise you're a pussy!"), but from the practical outlook that having to spend a few seconds putting the straps in place and having to do so in a bit of a cramped position is going to tamper with the Starting Strength five-step procedure of setting up the deadlift initial position.

This is why I think that "RuGrips"-type of straps are probably a better option. They're the only straps I'd use. If you don't know them I think you should try them and tell us what you think.
