I've been telling everyone that would listen for the last three years that Linux gaming is within a stones throw of Windows and is getting better every day. I would argue that for older games, Linux is much better than Windows.
I'm sorry but I dont understand how many people are being this optimistic, you just can't compete with games running natively in your system, yes the solution to the problems of gaming in linux are better every year but the fact that there is a problem isn't something I see changing in the future
@@andresvalera1430 The reason games are not developed for Linux (except playstation but that's a different story), is because there are not enough users who game on Linux for the development cost to be justified. With it becoming easier to run non-native games on Linux, and windows becoming ever increasingly shitty, the Linux gaming user base is continuously growing. Especially with how much steam has advanced their proton development. So it's only a matter of time until games start being developed for both windows and linux natively.

Man, you keep putting out great videos. Thank you for the awesome tutorials and break downs on Wine, Lutris, and Proton. What do you think of the idea of Valve using Proton to set up a server farm for a game streaming service?
@@ChrisTitusTech I am totally with you there. I am not super interested in it myself, they just seem to be setting up the pieces with the in-home streaming, now the Steam Link Anywhere, and Proton back in August. I feel like they just about have everything in place now, and it wouldn't surprise me either way. But I think we have definitely benefited greatly already.
@@ChrisTitusTech At first I was also sceptic about this, but you shouldn't think of it as a full replacement for PC Gaming. There are games (especially multiplayer) that rely on very low input latency, and for them gaming PC is always going to be a way to go, but many of today's titles, especially AAA, are about a story and graphics. Now, think of game streaming like of Netflix subscription. All you need is subscription and fast, reliable connection. You don't have to bother about hardware, you don't have to even bother about buying the games, you just pick one that's avaliable and you're ready to go.
Years ago, I was in the middle of a raid of 24 and everyone in my timezone had windows pop them out of the game at the same time to proudly proclaim it had downloaded new updates to ask us if we would like to install them now. I use Pop_os and lutris now and while not perfect, windows update will never trouble me again.
A great idea for a new Distro - Games only! When you want do other things just reboot to another OS. Everything setup on install, could be real simple and light. Hit the button! 25K - Up,up,up ... great content!
@@ChrisTitusTech It looks like it will be forever and a day for Steam OS 3 "Clockwerk". They're using two major headaches - Debian and Gnome 3. Both have had major updates recently and all their past work is probably lost, so sad.
I'm about to test this out for the first time. Being able to play fairly 1-to-1 compared to Windows (since even Proton can't handle some games) was my only remaining question before I went full-in on Linux instead of Windows. Thank's for showing this!
There are valid reasons to switch to Linux. Linux being better for gaming is NOT one of them. Many people want a gaming experience that’s simple and just works. Not wanting to have to install wine and lutris and the lutris script to install dependencies and then the game itself. All to pray that it actually works. I keep windows dual booted for gaming and other windows apps. With time that may change but I think that’s based on dev support, not workarounds.
Everyone one of your videos absolutely blows me away. Decided to give this a try after my official switch over into a fully functional Linux Operating System. I'm booted Pop OS of a usb i bought. I appreciate your videos and all the countless knowledge you share. I have a question, for older games, I noticed one in particular Lutris asked for a ROM. Do you have any knowledge on steps to obtain them. I just started my research and I do not want to break any potential set ups lol. Thanks again Chris! Blessings!
There have been a few older games I couldnt get running on windows 10 for compatibility issues. That I get running on linux easily. I havent found a game yet I couldnt get running in lutris with some tinkering.
my favorite thing about linux users like you is they would go on and on how easy it is to use linux and what it can do they never mention what linux CANNOT do, which is a lot
ooh the wine selection is so great, you can choose the wine version that works for your game that just sounds like a lot of work around and finding out which version works with what linux is great when it works, until it doesn't
Over the past 24 hours, I've been quickly moving my game library over to Linux. So many great tools and options for getting Windows native titles to run well on Linux these days. Man it feels good to be back on Linux again (switched back to Windows in 2017 when I built my first gaming PC). I've yet to have to move on over to my Windows partition to play a game, and I've already installed and ran several games. Also love that I was able to easily move my 1070 Ti OC profile from Windows over to Linux via GreenWithEnvy. Fantastic, no-nonsense, tool.
Awesome video! Lutris changed for the better from the last time I tried it. Now it's time for Protontricks video! It changed a lot and now you can launch protontricks gui to choose a game and then launch winetricks for the Proton prefix of a specific game which is super cool and easy. And of course, once we have easy access to all the proton configurations... the sky is the limit ;). This is the current developed Protontricks project (the old one was abandoned and this is a more developed fork): github.com/Matoking/protontricks It works great on Manjaro, not sure about Debian thou but I'm sure you will figure it out.
@@ChrisTitusTech It would be a short one for Arch users but for others, this may not be so easy to install so I guess installation+usage will give few minutes. I was thrilled to find how easy is to use Protontricks now with GUI. No need to hunt for game ID, plunge into deeply rooted folders. Imagine installing some game utilities and mods within a Proton's prefix. Now it's easy! Gaming is becoming better and better so quickly on Linux! It's amazing! All the tools are developing simultaneously and it enhances the effect.
lutris, wine and steam proton is just awesome. i love linux and would love to use only linux but sadly even with lutris you need to be afraid of getting banned in multiplayer games with anti cheat software that will confuse wine/linux with a cheat. in past there have been several ban waves, e.g. battlenet/overwatch or guildwars 2. thats just sad. I just want to play games. I know steam is trying to work together with anti cheat companies but we dont know if that will happen or when it will happen or how good it will happen. I really want to game on linux but I dont want to fear to get banned in games that I bought. Currently I play 3 games (overwatch, rainbow six siege and guildwars 2). In 2 of 3 I have to be afraid to get banned and getting my invested time and money turned useless, the other one (rainbow) doesnt even work with lutris. When Linux gaming will finally happen.... its a nice video but I feel like you should warn "new" linux users about that...just because they can install and play a game through lutris doesnt mean they wont possibly get banned.
Stumbling upon Lutris was a great thing for me and this is a great video on it. Thanks for making it! I just have 2 questions. Is it compatible with controllers for navigation of the interface? Also is there a way to group console games into their own folders so they don't crowd out the other kinds of games?
Hello Chris, I'm not sure if you read comments, but I'll give it a shot. I would love to switch from Windows to linux. If what you said was true, then I would. You said that the future of gaming, is Linux. But how can that be, when some games are unplayable, even with effort? Examples of this are games that rely on battle eye; Arma 3, Conan Exiles. On those games I wouldn't be able to play on official servers. Do you know of any workaround on this? Or should I wait switching to linux, or at least dual-boot for the time being?
I'd wait or dual boot as I still boot into Windows for PUBG. However, this year I have seen huge jumps in performance and Linux beating windows in some instances with AMD cards on the mesa-aco compiler... I think in a year we will have very close to 100% coverage as we are nearing 80% right now.
good video, I find Fallout 4 works better in lutris than steam proton, mainly because for some reason f4se doesn't seem to work in proton but does when in stalling in a wine bottle\lutris. I also got Vortex to work (sort of) but the plugins sort function doesn't work, however LOOT does work fine so combining lutris-vortex-LOOT I sometime forget that i am playing on linux instead of Windows. I have been Windows free for 4 weeks now, I don't see myself going back.
What if I already installed all of my games on steam. Whould Lutris recognized them and add the appropriate support files to run them? Because steam play with proton not working for me.
Is it possible to stream Lutris games on the network like Steam does? Also, it would be nice to be able to launch and configure Steam games running Proton directly from Lutris (one stop shop)
Seems hard, but I'll give it a try; it seems it's more like a guess the wine vers, thing... I'm on linux Mint Cinnamon, an I've been using Playonlinux, but it won't allways work. Lutris is ideal for importing games from different apps; didn't knew it could do that! Indeed a big plus, because you don't have to enter a specific client, that updates and takes time... Gaming on linux seems far better, but I'm uncertain as of now...
I've installed PlayOnLinux and a driving game from 2007, and I can't get the game to run. With Lutris, could I install the game from its original DVD? I'm not much of a gamer; I just want to play 2 or 3 older games, basically. Thanks.

I get the advantages of using Lutris on game management and game installing. But is there an actual advantage of launching Steam games through Lutris? I mean in Steam you can turn on the linux gamemode, and run games with proton or even proton GE. I am not thinking less of Lutris, Im just curious if launching Steam games from Lutris would actually bring an advantage over runing them directly from Steam. Thanks for the video!
I have a question. TOTAL LINUX NOOB HERE! So I have a bunch of games on an external HD that I run through windows 10 right now. Everything from AAA games to indie games from the past 6 years or so. Not going to mention where I happened to procure these games, but I think you can figure it out. So I want to install linux, am I going to be able to run all those games? Will they perform the same? Not talking about running them from steam or GOG or anything cuz I didn't get them there. Should I attempt this?
I've been using Ubuntu for over 2 years now and I haven't had any major issues except a couple minor ones that where just me being stupid. :) I hope you're experience with Linux will be as great as mine. Also disco dingo look great and I'm really excited to use it.

My pc runs so much better with linux even my mouse feels more connected like a true 1 to 1 . I enjoy what I can do thanks to you as most of the stuff you cover just isnt covered in depth enough for me to understand and you explain things in a easy way. On a side note ... I saw you have ark and I enjoy so much the building in that game . Do you have cool builds or do you play survival more ? Thanks again for all the help , couldnt do it without you
ooh i think i recognize some of those options from your wine tutorial the only piece i don't see is the 'packages' part iirc makes me wonder if it can used for things other then games i suppose i didn't see fonts either for that to work don't get me wrong i'm not against the manual method, i'm wondering for those that aren't savvy for the manual method
Does anyone here use Unity as a professional? I'm a Unity developer and its the only reason why I can switch to linux full time. The Unity editor does run in linux yes, but its piss poor compared to windows build. I know its not linux's fault. but its still an issue that i can't see a short term solution for.... i guess i just have to wait until the Unity devs make it just as good as the Windows version

But still, my far cry games are supported by lutris and still not running no matter what I do :(, I guess I will wait for this amazing project to develop a bit untill it works perfectly, stays on Windows for now, Also, Chris I wanted to ask if you know why chrome won't run at 144hz in linux? Only firefox with a bit of configuration
@@ChrisTitusTech for some reason the refresh rate of the system doesn't effect the browsers by default (on Windows it works out of the box no matter what browser), on firefox I have to configure it by going to about:config and change the "layout.refresh rate" and on chrome there's no workaround, you can see it just by looking of the scrolling smoothness + there's a website that shows your browser fps
Been having a lot more luck with Pop! OS this time around. Had issues with King of Fighters XIV that crashed saying I didn't have Open GL 3.4. probably need to update my video card drivers? I have an hp laptop with a Radeon 8610g. I guess all the Vulkan updating was not enough. I did get other games to run this time I didn't expect.
Here's what I don't get: I don't want to install any game, I want to take already installed games, having spent countless hours playing them on Windows 7, most of them portable and some with my saved game files from My Games section of my User folder, still in their drives (not the one on which I had my Windows 7 installation) and play them on my Ubuntu 20.04, which is the only installed OS on my PC at the moment. How can I make that happen?
Hi there and thanks for showing us he Linux way. There is a thing that I'm missing: GOG games! I can't find a way to install them on Xubuntu. The GOG Client (Gog Galaxy) can't install under unix; if I download the .exe from gog website along with the .BIN files the .exe can't complete the installation process because gives an error. Lastly, when you link your gog account on lutris it goes to look for the installer that you must have previously download,. In this case it is possibl eeven to run the installer through wine: but the writing process doesn't have the permission to write in /home: that's why it gives back the Error 5. So I'm stuck: could you please suggest how to get out of it?
So a quick question: I have both dxvk and d9vk aswell as esync enabled for alot of games and while they run great I was wondering if I should choose one instead of having both ?

The Lutris install script for the "rockstar game launcher" doesn't work. Can you take a look and maybe figure out why it doesn't work on pop_os for nvidia.
I am having a weird issue where I had installed Steam. Installed a couple games in steam. Then I installed Lutris, and Lutris ends up trying to install its own version of steam, separate from the one I already had. The version that Lutris installed seems to also be slower than the one I initially installed, and both can run at the same time. Its weird. I am not sure how to get Lutris to open the Steam I already had. Also, the game Lutris sees in Steam does not launch from Lutris, but launches fine from Steam directly(either steam version).
I have been trying to play darksiders 3 with proton in steam but I get less than 30fps, in windows all settings set to epic I get above 70fps in 1080p. I tried proton experimental and also the stable versions but they all perform terribly. My distro is Garuda Linux running on GTX 1070, n 8gb ram with xeon e3 processor. Do I need lutris to make it run better or is it my hardware?
People say that you just have to click Install at the Lutris website, but surely you need to actually own the game somehow. Does the Lutris website recognize if you have connected, for example, your Blizzard/Battle.net account to Lutris desktop client or something? How does Lutris authenticate your ownership of the game?
One question regarding Lutris. I am kinda aware that you can download auto config files for Lutris, what is actually going on in this config files? Are they running scripts? Or is it more like an file which contains meta data like xml? Honestly the reason I wouldn't use, for instance, AUR in Arch is that installing someones scripts could easily harm your OS. You neither would download an exec file on windows from someone you do not know, would you? (Yes the avg. windows user might would do this :) )
I really want to switch to Linux, so I've been trying it out on an old laptop. That's running Mint, and is great. I recently been trying out Manjaro on my desktop though. I've managed to set up Wine and Lutris just fine, but I've run into issues with getting Battle.Net to be able to go online. It keeps coming up with the following error "your browsers cookies are disabled, Please re enable cookies to continue." I've tried trouble shooting things that other people have suggested that may be causing the issue, but nothing seems to work. Can someone please help?

I was able to install NWN from GOG thanks to your video. However, I came to some problem. NWN can be downloaded from GOG in my language version (Polish) but when installed by Lutris, the game is in English and I don't know if I can change that, at least not without re-downloading and re-installing the game. My suspicion is, I need to tweak the install script, but when I checked it, it has clearly a lutris path to English installer and I suspect there is no other one... So that would leave me with manual installation through wine in Lutris but that is the thing I have no idea about. Temporary I'm also trying GOG Galaxy which may show some native language options, but that would install all GOG games to one bottleneck which isn't good. Besides, I can't even launch it, it says "File not provided" and it's correct. The path is there but no file... Installation clearly gone wrong. Oh well, uninstalling. EDIT: I realized, Lutris is not installing GOG windows version of NWN but is using Linux installer instead, which is English only so I can either have wine version in Polish (which have some troubles) or English Linux version. I guess I'll stick to Linux English. EDIT: I installed two games from GOG who do have Linux version on GOG and they installed in Polish version so I guess all works correctly if there is a proper localization available, so there is no problem after all :).
When I did all the wine staging and install, lutris does not open by clicking the app. Yet it starts when I sudo lutris in the terminal. There a way to solve that on mint?

OT here, I'm building a PC that I'll use for gaming and other general task. Ryzen 1600X, 24gb 2666mhz ram and RX 580. If like to know what drivers are better for gaming in this case if using Linux Mint.
How can I use this to install steam games if it only shows games I have already installed? Steam wont allow you by default to install games on incompatible platforms? (Serious question BTW).
will black desert online none steam version play on a Linux system, because I've heard of people having problems with that, or getting banned after a while even if the game actually runs
Honestly you can't use gaming as an Excuse for not trying linux... My ovewatch it gets the same frames per second in Linux as it does windows And plays identical with no stuttering
Good for you. Personally I haven't been able to get more than 20fps out of wine/proton. It's really annoying since I hate dealing with a dual boot system.
@anonymous guy not with the newest dvxk it does not... And my laptop is a Potato with a to MX940 nivida... I get the same FPS and no stuttering I guess my Potato is immune
