M1V1=M2V2 (aka C1V1=C2V2) is a magical formula that lets you calculate chemical dilutions forward and backward. How much stock solution do you need to make a final solution with a desired concentration? If you dilute a certain amount of stock solution to a final solution, what is the final concentration? As long as you know 3 of the components, you can use algebra to determine the fourth! In this video, Borna Zareiesfandabadi explains how to use the M1V1=M2V2 formula, including examples, and they describe four different ways to express chemical concentration (mg/ml, M, % and working solution 1X).
M1 = concentration of starting (stock) solution
V1 = volume taken from starting (stock) solution to be diluted
M2 = concentration of final (diluted) solution
V2 = total volume of final (diluted) solution
