This might be redundant information now but technically you don't need plug in power for the road wireless go as it outputs a mic/line level output. But I totally understand getting an adapter that just works, for anybody else doing this I would recommend the next level down Road has an adapter that doesn't do the phantom power 48v to plug-in power 2-4v conversion it's way cheaper and works with any active microphone that has a battery in it mostly. The reason the first XLR adapter you got didn't work is the wiring followed the traditional XLR to TRS quarter inch cable wiring where as the microphone is not outputting a balanced signal, it's out putting a stereo signal with a left and a right rather than a tip ring shield, hot cold ground arrangement. The added benefit of not needing the conversion and I'm pretty sure this adapter will work without phantom power applied, it will decrease the battery drain on the recorder with it off. I don't have those adapters so I would recommend trying it first. However having the plug-in power adapters allows you to plug-in just about any computer microphone, something I have been looking for but didn't want to spend that much per adapter. I went with the Movo ones instead. edit: oh yeah and I really think manufacture should start putting the circuit diagrams up for these adapters, it's really hard to tell whether it's going to come out the opposite end in the right combination needed. I was looking for ethernet separators and after purchasing 8x from eBay that were supposed to do that I ended up with splitters. The difference is 8 wires in and 8 wires out onto Jack's, or what I was looking for 8 wires in with 4 to 1 Jack and 4 to the other. I'm over in West Virginia and did extensive research before buying two months ago, and wondering why I didn't run across your channel when I was doing extensive research. I think you're the first person who is taking it further than a two channel system and has posted a video about it. That is until the newly released version 2....

@@nextlevelcraig I've gone looking for information on phantom power and plug in power and the line gets blurred between the two so much that I try if I have the opportunity to help straighten this info out. it's pretty cool, I can't wait to see some more reviews on it. the transmitters record internally a loop back up although I'm still questioning whether that will be a patent infringement issue In the US..... It's now a dual channel unit with two transmitters to one receiver. Supposedly it's going to be backwards compatible with the original transmitters. Better range and antennas. That kind of revision to wait on before buying and then as soon as you bought one they upgraded it kind of thing. B&H and at least one other RU-vidr have done a review so far. Although I still think the originals have their usefulness. Love the colored stickers, I was wondering what a good way to distinguish them would be. I only have one set right now, hoping to get a good deal on a second one at some point.

Craig, great video. Just ONE thing I cannot get past. I have 2 Rode Wire Pro setups (2 mics each). I am going into my Sound Devices MixPre 6 to get a multitrack audio clip as syncing audio afterwards is always tough. The issue I am having is dropout. I think it's because the 2 Rode Pro receivers are fighting for the same/close frequencies. So they kind of battle it out. I am wondering, with those SINGLE CHANNEL/First edition Rode mics, did you ever find that they had any frequency problems? I am looking to find a solution for these Rode Wireless Pro mic sets. Thank you and anybody else that has an answer.

Hey I’m new to videography. Working on filming my son’s sports events. We are currently in football so the camera is on the sideline and he is mic’d up in the field. I use the rode wireless me mic. Would it be overkill if I connected a rode VideoMic to the phone and had audio from it and the wireless me at the same time? Is this is a good idea to enhance audio quality?

Don't know if i'm a little late commenting on this, but for people in the future; I've found that when i connect my wireless GOs to my zoon h4n pro and it gets too close to the body of the recorder, there is interference between the transmitter and the reciever caused by the zoom recorder. also I don't use XLR to jack adapters I found that a Big jack to small Jack works great. I didn't know it accepted that at first but on the zoom h4n, and other zoom recorder models (including the H5, H6 and H8) here is a hole in the middle of the xlr slot that the big jack fits right into.

Aren’t you able to turn off phantom power completely on your Zoom? Or does it need the power just in a smaller voltage? Or does it not need the phantom power at all? Because if that’s the case there’s an option to turn off phantom power on the zoom. At least on the zoom h4n it is. Not sure about your model the zoom h6.

Hi Craig, thanks for the enjoyable video! As a note, you do not need the Rode VXLR+ adapters for use with the Rode Wireless Go receivers, other than as a 'safety precaution' to stop accidentally blowing-up your receivers with 48v of 'Phantom Power'. Wireless Go recovers do NOT require any power into their audio output cable. So you can safely switch off phantom power on your Zoom recorder, should you have enabled it (that will make the Zoom's batteries last longer too). However, what you now have is the ability to plug in TRS Lavalier microphones directly into the Zoom recorder and switch on Phantom Power for the VXLR+ DC to DC converters to send a low voltage supply to them :-) :-) Zoom also make a VXLR (non-plus) adapter, which does not have a DC to DC converter built-in. This is cheaper and will work fine with the Wireless Go receivers, PROVIDING THAT YOU DO NOT SWITCH ON PHANTOM POWER (if you do, you risk blowing the receivers). Likewise don't use these with directly plugged-in Lavaliers. Finally, Rode's wiring of their VXLR adapter is different from most TRS/XLR adapter cables. Let me know if you want a wiring / rewiring diagram to make other cables work.

Nearly identical to what I said oops should've read comments first. Yeah most adapters are TRS tip ring sleeve hot cold ground and most camera 3.5 plug in power jacks are wired left right ground, unless you're working with a cell phone with a TRSS jack then hopefully the device is new enough to be following the standards set forth Inadvertently by Apple. I would suspect that the Rode VXLR non-fantompower version I think that's the right model number would have capacitors to block DC voltage for protection but without paying the price to dissect one I can't confirm that. Although there's no complaints of people frying their mics so? It's amazing I actually went in search of those passive adapters that just wire straight through and they were such hard to find things. I wanted to be able to send a stereo signal down an XLR cable and pick it back out the other end with the opposite adapter. So I could run one XLR cable across the room to a laptop or TV and then at the other end spit it back out to left and right into a mixer.

You just had a problem with setting up both the Zoom and your transmitter to be set at either line level or mic level. The transmitter doesn't need any kind of power to assist with its outputting of audio. It's defaulted to output at mic level, and your Zoom might have been set at line level. In this case you wouldn't hear the signal being sent. Those adapters you purchased are for connecting the lavalier mic directly, which would require phantom power for it the work. But I'm glad that it turned out to working for you.

just want to add my case, I have 4 (1 Wireless Go II - 2 receivers, and 2 sets of original rode wirless go) I have issues that the audio is breaking out. at first, I thought it was the distance or interference but I am not so sure yet I need to test more with a more control setup. I somehow feel like the wireless Go II is better with avoiding interference, but I also read on the FAQ from Rode, that at most you can use 8 sets of the Rode Wireless Go (1st version) at the same time! I guess after reading all the comments, we could try.. a. keep some distance for each receiver b. use a slightly longer cable to connect the receivers to the Zoom recorder to avoid interference.

Hi, I have the same set up, but using the regular Rode VXLR to minijack adapter (www.rode.com/accessories/vxlr) which is about 10$ instead of the much more expensive VXLR+ adapter - up to now I haven't experienced any problems, I assume that the Rode Wireless Go Receivers don't need plug in power (3-5V) due to the fact that they are powered by themselves. The VXLR+ is to use mics that need plug in power if used on a XLR input as far as I understand.

I assumed the same thing, that they didn't need any additional power. And maybe that is correct, maybe the xlr adapters I was using were just terrible. But I did try 2 different brands. I also tried 1/4 and they all gave me horrible interference/buzzing like sound.

I think the rode wireless go doesn't require plug in power to work as it is already self powered by its battery unlike something like the rode videomicro that requires power to operate. the reason why the other XLR to 3.5mm adapters wont work is because the zoom h6 expects a balanced audio source, but the wireless go sends out an unbalanced, stereo signal. So one of the channel is flipped and cancel out the other channels, giving you the distorted sounds you are hearing. you can simply get a cheap 1/4 TS to 3.5mm adapter and it will work fine. the VXLR is probably wired in such a way that prevents a stereo unbalanced signal to be fed into the zoom h6.

Makes sens @tjrsasea and I would also say it gets its own power from the receiver as needed and the mic lives in another box, with its own power so, you can't compare the situation with a mic needing 12V or whatever voltage. This was a great 👍🏽 video. Nice strong voice and very well spoken. Great information. I would definitely follow to see more of your work. I can tell that you are normally the one behind the camera ...the creator. I want to see you take this video to the Next Level and I mean flawless. I want to see you in front of the camera and OWN it because you built it. Do the research and script everything you do. The hardest thing which takes some getting use to is talking to us viewers with zero interaction from us because we look like a camera lens but it can only get better because the content is of value and you are being yourself. This is the reason you have all this positive comments. Keep up the great work. 👍🏽✌🏽

Plug in power, phantom power is normally only required for condenser microphones as power to work. Moving, dynamic microphones, don't require power. I'm guessing you had the wrong xlr adapters as the TRS , 3.5mm Jack's are stereo,. The wierd sound you probably heard when you tried those leads, sounds like bad earthing, when the earth is not connected (floating).

Hi Craig, My purpose is to record videos on my canon camera using a wireless microphone(just like the rode wireless go). But i also need something to be able to hear(wireless) the audio of the participants in Zoom calls or regular phone calls and talk to them.Bose QuietComfort 35 can do this.But it looks too heavy and lacks the ability of routing my audio to the canon camera (mic input 3.5mm )which is bit far from my desk. I don't want to buy two different things. So suggest me some wireless microphone that can transfer my audio clearly to the camera or laptop and also listen audio in calls.(a very minimalistic headset that looks good in the videos & video calls/detachable from the microphone setup when not in use).Please ensure it is compact, wireless, good quality microphone. If it is a user replaceable battery system, then it will be more convenient to me.

You can plug the Rode wireless go receiver into your laptop, and wear the microphone. After that any wireless headset you like will let you hear the zoom participants.

You went through EGGZAKLY what I am going through now except I am connecting two Rode inputs and two Samson CO2 condenser mics. I always thought that the Rode Wireless Go TX supplied their own power so Phantom power was not needed. The other thing I had to figure out was to connect the Rode Rodelink Filmmaker TX to the Line Out so I could go directly to my Canon 5D Mk iv camera. Lots of things to figure out.

There Zoom H6 is an external recorder. Instead of recording audio directly to your camera, you can record audio separately and add it to your video later.

The Rode mics weren't designed to work in sets. If that's what you need them don't buy them, there are other mics that can do that for you. I was already stuck, so I had to find a solution. And I wanted to share what I found.
@artistsimpression
@artistsimpression 4 года назад
Excellent explanation. I ended up with an almost identical setup although I used the original Rode 3.5 to xlr adaptor. Never had any issues with the zoom not picking it up or having any distortion. I plug all 4 mics into the zoom and then feed a line out into the Atem mini. Nice simple live audio setup.

@artistsimpression

@@nextlevelcraig yeah. You can manually turn off phantom on the H6 and amend voltage as well I think. Great video again buddy! One positive of this setup (which is a happy accident I found out on a job last night) you can easily cut individual mics during a live broadcast by just turning the inputs off. Really helps when people are messing with papers during someone else talking haha.
