A tip on installation. I was replacing just a standard on/off thermostat where it was a simple relay to just switch the boiler on and off and the radiator temperature was set by the dial on the boiler. I almost just installed it like for like so the Nest would just turn the heating on or off. I was then reading the manual and it mentioned "Opentherm". I initially dismissed this with my boiler being a few years old until I removed the front from the boiler and much to my delight were two wires labelled "opentherm". Hooked the Nest up to this and it greatly improves the functionality. Now Nest regulates the temperature output from the boiler so we often have the heating running for much longer periods than before but the radiators are much cooler and not blasting us with 80c heat! You can then also set the hot water temperature in the app which is handy. If I try to turn the dials on the boiler it displays a message on the display that the temperature is regulated by thermostat and the dials have no effect. So double check if you have opentherm and use this if you have it!

Hi Charlie I have been using them schedules easy enough but I am having trouble with the times they come on. This morning was set for 6.30 chechedcthe app to confirm the times were correct but the heating came on about 03.00 the leaf setting is down to 15C is there away of checking what has triggered the on off ie timer or leaf I also had it set for 18.45 last night for when my wife got home but she said the heating was not on when she arrived at 19.30? Puzzling These are great videos for reference thank you for taking the time to do them..
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 5 лет назад
Funnily enough our heating came on in the middle of the night the night before last, because the temperature of the room actually dropped below 15deg. Maybe that's what happened? I don't think there's a way of checking what triggered it, but you can see on your history when it came on. As for the evening issue, maybe the room was already at temperature by then, so the heating had switched off? Or maybe the Nest realised no one was home and set itself to Away?

Can you set the Nest to just run the fan in furnace/AC? It gets a little stuffy in the bedrooms at night and circulating the air helps greatly. Right now, on my current Honeywell, I have it setup so that during the night the temperature goes down one degree every 3 hours to circulate the air. I don't really need the lower temperature, just some air circulation.
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 6 лет назад
I've not got mine set up for A/C, it's just set up for heating via a combi boiler, but I guess you could set it as you do with your Honeywell Thermostat so it drops every couple of hours? You can set it at half a degree Celsius intervals so it allows for small changes. Hope that helps?

Hi we have a old boiler. There is no temperature reading within the house, it's one of them old clock wheel switches and once on the boiler turns on and off based on the heat of the water returning in the pipes to the boiler. Do I need to buy anything extra that the thermostat will take the temperature of inside the house to turn on or off.
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 4 года назад
First I would check if the Nest will work with the old boiler. The boiler will need the right connections. If that's all good then no there is nothing else you need, as the Nest itself is a thermostat.

Hi Charlie, thankyou for posting this excellent tutorial. I have one question, hopefully you can help. Does the Nest work with more than 1 heating zone? I have 2 zones, downstairs and upstairs, can I control these 2 zones separately using the Nest? I also have the got water on a separate switch. I currently use the Horseman control unit to set my hot water, downstairs heating and upstairs heating, all these are independent of each other. Regards, Tom.

Thank you, glad you like the video! The Nest can only control one zone, so you would need a different Nest for each zone unfortunately. One of those should be able to control the water as well, although I'm no expert on that as mine isn't set up to do it. Hope that helps!

@@charlieshooter I would have preferred you go through the more advanced functions rather than skipping them because that's something I would really be interested in. In my opinion you need to know your exact run time cycle related to energy consumption, particularly on a 2-Stage Furnace. And does the Nest have actual 2-Stage capability? What appeals most to me about the Nest is the very nice easy to read display with the easy to adjust rotating dial. It seems the menus are for the most part very clear.
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 5 лет назад
It's a great little bit of kit (and I am no way affiliated to Nest!) It's really easy to use and the average user doesn't need to touch any settings I haven't gone into on the video really. As far as I'm aware the Nest will work with a 2 stage furnace. Give it a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed!

We have a Combi boiler and have two zones, 1st Zone is for downstairs and Zone 2 for the upstairs. We are sitting in our bedroom just now and it’s cold yet the Thermostat states 18 so I turned it up to 20. 15 min later the bedroom radiator was still not going warm, any ideas? I am also wondering if you could explain setting the daily temperatures? On our old boiler we had the spin dial and you could set it coming on at 10am and then going off at 12pm...how does this do the same job or does it constantly keep the temp at the desired setting...but then how does that save you money if it never goes off, if you know what I mean lol
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 6 лет назад
As far as the radiator in the bedroom is concerned...I'd say to check the Thermostatic Radiator Valve (big turny knob thing on the one side of the radiator) is up to max. Failing that....does the radiator need bleeding? If both of these are fine, maybe your Nest is faulty? Have a look at my "How to set a schedule" video for help on setting up times for it to be on and off. Just remember, if you want the heating to go off at a specific time, just set the temperature to a real low one so it will never reach it.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 6 лет назад
it's more efficient for temperature to be maintained than to go dramatically down at night and then up again in the day. just like it's more efficient to keep a constant speed in your car than to be constantly accelerating and then braking. this is what nest does with the "away" setting, as well as the night settings. the idea is to turn it down a bit to reduce the heat loss to the outside world, but still keep it steady instead of letting it plummet. when you turn the heating on after it's been off all night, for the first few hours the heat is all absorbed into the furnishings and carpet and stuff before the ambient temperature can begin to change. by keeping the temperature steady, whatever heat is stored in those furnishings doesn't get lost to the environment, and changes to your temperature can begin taking action immediately.
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 6 лет назад
That is what we did this winter and honestly, it was a more comfortable house to live in and things weren't cold to the touch in the morning! I definitely see what your saying, but whether it's more efficient is the age old question and hard to prove, because the outside temperature is always variable. For example, we used more gas this year doing it this way, but then it was a much colder winter! Some houses are better at retaining the heat than others too. Comparing it to a car is not necessarily accurate because a car needs it's engine running whatever speed you are doing, whereas a boiler shuts off once it's reached its temperature. Some people may also want the boiler to stay off during the night, so it doesn't disturb them, if, for example, it's in a cupboard in the bedroom. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😀

@philje123

Yes. Although my boiler is much newer the previous thermostat was a simple on/off 230v one. You then disconnect the 230v wires from the boiler side and they go to the heatlink box that sits next to the boiler which supplies 12v down the wires. You then connect the nest backplate to the existing thermostat wires so it is then fed 12v from the box to power itself. Then new wires from the heatlink to the boiler which will switch it on/off.

I have one major issue with the nest thermostate. After doing a ton of research I came to the conclusion that there is no way to override the nest schedule. Most times I want to use the schedule that I manually set up. But other times my work shift schedule occaisionally changes for short periods of time and I would like to bypass my nest schedule and run manually. But it really sucks that the nest will not let me have that option. I have an older Honeywell wifi thermostate that easily allowes me to bypass schedule when needed. Looks like I will be reinstalling that.
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 5 лет назад
I see what you mean. You can override it at any time by manually adjusting the temperature, but that will only take you to the next schedule point and then it carries on with the schedule. I think its because they designed it to be a learning thermostat.

Hi Charlie, I really could do with some advice. I purchased a Nest for my professional house share..I believed it would be good and give me at least some control of gas usages. My trouble being is one guy likes to switch the nest to 20 degrees as he retires to bed. I've been fair heating comes on at 5.30am till 8am at 20 degrees... so it's warm for the earliest riser and stays on till 8am for last house mate leaving at 8.30am. It then comes on again at 4.30pm and stays on till 10pm. When this guy then goes to bed at 11.30pm ish he switches it up to 20 degrees!!!! Sometimes I'm still up and I pop it back to eco 17. However he'll get up in the night and turns it up again....the house hasn't dropped below 18 at any point so its certainly not freezing cold. The learning programme was no use as it was coming on in the early hours! I don't want a confrontation, is their anyway of fixing his fiddling in an evening and early hours please Charlie?
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 5 лет назад
Apart from having a stern word with the guy, there are 2 options. 1. Utilise the "lock" feature on the Nest. You can lock it so it can only be adjusted between a 2.5deg range on the Nest itself, but the schedule will still run (even if it's outside of this range) 2. Set a schedule that runs through the night where every 15mins it's set at 17deg, so if he does adjust it, it will only ever be on for a maximum of 15mins at a time, and then it'll go back down to 17deg. He'll soon get bored of waking up and adjusting it every 15mins!! 😉

I have to manually switch the nest off from the mains to stop it. There’s no particular pattern to when this happens but it’s usually 2-3 times a week. This process doesn't impact your HVAC performance, indeed it helps you save the energy and keeps you comfort at the same time. I suggest you to look for Airwave, Heat Pump balance if you have a Heat pump, True radiant if you have a radiant heating, Safety temperatures, Cool to dry features from nest.com. This features will help you understand why they goes on and off at times. But am sure they are for energy savings and comfort as well. Hope this info helps you. Arun :)

+Louis Hollands Strange. There's a few things to check. Is it all connected properly? Has it been set up properly? (Follow instructions in Nest manual) Is it set to "Heat"? Is the "set temperature" higher than the room temperature?....because if it isn't, it won't heat up.

You should be able to amend the schedule for that time if you want it at the higher temperature. Have a look at my other Nest videos to see if they help you out.

Great video. Can you tell me if Nest also controls hot water - your video didn't mention that - thanks
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 7 лет назад
+JACK ISMAIL Yes Nest will also control hot water if you have a tank set up. As I only have a combi-boiler I haven't got it set up to do the hot water though. Thanks for watching!

I have the heat on 90 but the temperature in the house is 70 which is to cold, how do I raise the heat in the house
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 3 года назад
The boiler should be kicking in if the house is 70 but the thermostat is set to 90? That's not working correctly otherwise.

Did you have to buy the base seperate?
@charlieshooter
@charlieshooter 5 лет назад
Yes, the stand is bought separately....but at the moment some places are giving a free stand when you buy the Nest.
