Hello, Mr.Berry Great videos and you are made to teach. I like the way you tell us beginners and I too use it in my line of work, when im the boss and you say look do it my way no if's and's or but's and you will not have a problem soldering! 100 percent correct. there is a lot to that statement. It doesn't mean there is not another way to do it. but listen and listen some more and do it this way until you are good at it. It will save you tons of time and headaches believe the instructor. then after you do it this way and are good at it then ask me a question. that is a life long tip to leaning things but Dad didn't say it as nice as you put it. keep up the great work. it's worth me repeating your teachings I thought.

As usual, fantastic information, done very well. I am wondering a few things (and thanks for the time you take to help us all): 1) why does paste solder cause pitting? 2) Why is it not strong (compared to other types of solder)? 3) Have you ever noticed how easy solder is not easy to use; does the higher zinc percentage in the alloy (as I've heard) cause the solder to puddle and stay mushy instead of flowing well? 4) Why not use it on larger pieces? Kim St. Jean (artist, teacher, author) seems to use it (paste solder) for everything she does, and she does a LOT! Do you have inferior results from using paste solder? Knowing the "Why's and How's" of these methods, materials, etc. is super helpful for learning to make jewelry well. I thank you so much for your wisdom and your time!

@GingerTedder - I also tried to reconstitute some dried up paste solder with mineral oil, however, once I had the "gooey mess" mixed thoroughly it was impossible to judge the amount I needed for the job at hand. i.e. the carrier/flux paste just burnt up leaving not enough silver to complete the join.

Thank you for this video. I am very new to soldering. I am working with copper wire. I have a solder paste with flux color match for brass, bronze, silver, copper or gold filled metals. It is not doing that. It looks silver after I am done. It also does not always flow even after fluxing. The solder hardens on me. How can I stop this? Is there a specific solder for copper that can be used? Can you use olive oil in a plastic cup instead of mineral oil in glass jar to store the unused portion in the tip?

Great video. Thanks for making it. What is the strongest solder? Wire or sheet?
@PatrickPoet
@PatrickPoet 6 лет назад
Wire or sheet solder made from the same alloy will be exactly as strong as each other. Solder isn't like glue whose strength holds things together. Instead it alloys with the metal being soldered and forms one solid piece of a new alloy. Silver solder is mostly silver so the piece will still pass assay. The solders with the highest melting temps, enameling and hard solder, have the highest silver content mixed with copper and/or maybe zinc to drop the melting temp. As you go through medium and easy there is less and less silver and more of the other things that drop the melting temp. Enameling or extra hard solder is usually about 80% solder, hard solder is usually about 75% silver, medium is about 70%, easy is about 65%, extra easy 60% or lower. When the solder alloys with the silver in the joint, proportionally the area now has less zinc or copper since any zinc or copper forms a molecular connection with silver in the joint. That means that the new alloy is like a harder solder and it will take more heat to remelt it. That's why we can do a bunch of hard solders on something without it falling apart. All this also applies the same with gold and gold solder.

Hi Andrew I don't understand why some people say it is too dangerous to use a bench polisher ( buffs/brushes etc,) for chains I was taught to do this and have been for years and have never had any issues .If there was a catch the chain would just be pulled form your grip the chain may be damaged although I can not see it causing injury
@markmcnally2044

@pijnto
@pijnto 6 лет назад
No different to polishing any other item if you are not diligent anything can throw back at you
@wendyannh
@wendyannh 5 лет назад
pijnto Yes, but because chain is so fine and flexible, the chances of it catching and both breaking and flying back at you are a lot greater than with a solid piece of metal. It’s just not as easy to hold stable enough - certainly for beginners. I personally even find the idea of using a flex shaft on a chain very scary as well, although I am sure I’ll try that before a bench polisher.
