Nice instruction and always succinct. The iRig Pre saved the day during the lockdown when I was forced to ramp up live video and podcasts for church. Now I am the video guy and I have a new hobby that I love.

I use the rode ai micro, while it only takes 1/8 stereo input, my XLR mic works beautifully on it with a XLR to 1/8 cable. Plus you can connect 2 mic’s to it and have two XLRs connected to your iPhone/iPad

Yeah that’s a great little interface. I’ve done several videos on it and use it routinely with my 3.5mm mics. This condenser mic requires phantom power so that creates a problem, but I have some other XLR that do work with it.

Have you tried using the front facing camera with your iPad while recording audio as well? If so, how did it turn out?

Thank you for your video! Can you tell us why you need to feed the audio out from Audio Interface to the Camera? Is it for syncing audio between video and audio files?

It’s just an optional use case and for me it’s because I’m doing a RU-vid video at the same time as recording a podcast or voiceover. Technically, you could just use the camera mic on the Sony and then sync it to the recorded iPad audio in post-production. The other thing is the audio interface needs the power from the iPad or a computer to work. You have to plug the USB-C into one of those devices and then you can send that signal to your camera (even if you don’t want to record to the iPad or computer). Hope that makes sense. The interface is not a traditional mixer but you can use it like that to record audio to the camera using a condenser microphone such as the Neumann that requires Phantom power.

Awesome video, dude! How do you keep your ipad charged though? Seems like that would be an issue because your ipad is powering the mic, and the focusrite. If you have any ideas on how to charge the tablet while connected to the focusrite please do respond! 😊

What post-processing software do you recommend for adding voiceover/music to a video? I screenshoot educational video tutorials using OBS and sometimes would like to add a better audio track or background music. Only making about one a month, inexpensive option preferable. Thanks!

I’d look at LumaFusion. Works on iPhone or iPad. And you can keep it really simple, or do advanced stuff as well.

Thanks for the awesome video! It really simplifies things. But hey, if you don't mind me asking, I noticed you're recording with a sample rate of 48 kHz and a bit depth of 24 bits. I thought my iPad Pro could only do 44.1 kHz.

I think that may have been the case years ago or if you’re just using the Voice Memo app with auto settings,, but iPads and iPhones can record 48k 16bit in the native camera app, and higher using third-party audio and video apps. Thanks for watching!

I’m trying to just make voice over videos on my iPad Pro M2 so for that setup I just need to get the scarlet 3rd gen and an XLR mic and I’ll be good to go?

Yes, that would work. Or you could get a USB mic and skip the interface. Really just depends on what you’re doing.

I’ve got my mixing board running into my iPad. Is there a way to have the mixing board mic and guitar override the iPad mic and just take the input from the mixing board? There isn’t any settings that I can find like on my laptop where it shows that it recognizes the mixing board and then allows me to click on either the mic board or continue using the internal iPad mic. Am I missing where that is in settings under mic?

Not sure, haven’t tried a setup like that. But when you connect a USB mic directly or an audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlet that overrides the built-in iPad mic. So it seems that would be the case here as long as the iPad sees the mixer. Not all devices can be seen though through the USB-C (or Thunderbolt), so make sure yours is compatible.

Thank you. I'm using the i/o irig, gen 4 ipad pro and logic pro with a rode nt1. I have crazy latency that is actually much worse than on my old first gen iPad Pro with the same setup. Any idea?

Does your iPad have lightning or USB-C? If it’s the latter you should have no problem. If it’s lightning it should still work with an adapter, but sometimes they don’t. In that case you might need to use an audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo and the XLRs.

Technically, yes, using the Rode AI Micro with XLR to 1/8 adapters, as long as the XLR mics are self-powered/battery powered, because there’s no phantom power. But you can’t connect Scarlet I/o for example, because it’s USB-C, but you could to an iPad.

This one no, at least not with an iPhone because it needs power and the lightning port isn’t powerful enough, but other USB-C phones should work or iPhones will work with other audio interfaces like the iRig Pre.
