Thank you Sir. I appreciate your education bc I've got some street in me. I'm on the end of society most consider throw away poverty street stigma BS. And my language can intimidate, where it's hard to change myself to appease them as to what they think I should be. A dumb blonde from the streets who has no rights to be intelligent wise or virtuous AF. And because I'ma woman, damn... do I get slack for my social class and speech. Could you help people like us out who want to get our message across, but Society has a stigma about us, and doesn't realize things in our communication differ from our culture being on the streets, or in lower poverty lower economic status AKA apparently not good enough for society. Would you consider doing any classes to help us? Thank you for your consideration Sir.

Great tips on using notes. I liked how you mentioned the confidence monitor (as long as it is connected wireless). Students are using their phones (which i generally discourage) instead of note cards.

I have my own style of preparation. I tend to deconstruct my presentations into anchor points that break down, not so much logically, but by where (abstractly) I want to be for each one of those points. It is just as important to recognize the logical/rhetorical tendrils that connect each anchor point. I end up diagramming the speech out visually on paper and put the anchor points on notecards for practice. Ultimately, the cards function only as a security blanket, and I never have to reference them. As long as I have the sequence of anchor points in my head the words will come organically. There's probably a better way to explain it, but it is 2 am, and I need to get to bed.😂 Interestingly, my presentations seem to come out even longer than I expect, because I'm not just trying to pump out bullet points, but construct monologues that unfold like a good stand-up act. --- I developed my method when I had to do presentations on a daily basis to professional colleagues. Ironically, I took the job because I wanted to get over a fear of public speaking.

Yes, using notecards is by far the best way to present a speech! I normally draw little illustrations so that I'm not reading anything! The little pictures prompt me as to what to say next!

Using notecards was a game changer for me. By switching to them, my speaking improved exponentially.

Thanks @Alex, Notes are great but also dangerous. Dangerous because I've seen so many speakers look too much at their notes, or read off of slides and overload the slides. When I did both my TEDx talks, I went for NO slides and NO notes. Yes, it took a lot of practice, but if you can avoid the audience to read or looking at a speaker that looks at notes, it's nice. HOwever, I do agree on your 3d approach, keep the notes to a minimum, but that also means you need to practice a LOT so you know what to say. I'm curious what you do with your RU-vid, cause I do the same for my videos, I'd script it and then only have a few words to help me remind me of what to say, what do you do?

Good points. People will often read their notes, which I always recommend against. For videos, it depends on the video. I sometimes use a word-for-word script if it's really detailed and technical with lots of specifics. Or, I just use an outline.

I’ve noticed that when somebody is doing a PowerPoint presentation and their slides are very detailed. Because I cannot like all humans multifunction. I have tendency to read the slide and I am not listening to the professor. So I think a PowerPoint presentation each slide should be simple. The audience should be able to read the slide within five seconds and or at a clamp. 👍👍👍👍👍😎

I needed this, because I used to do this before (Speak without notes) but after a 4-month program (2015) I was attached to notes etc now I'm trying very hard to wean myself from this practice. I need help!

I would say commit to approach 3, the note cards, and stick with it. It may take a few presentations to get 100% comfortable but it'll help you a ton.

I had a similar experience. I spoke from simple outlines for year, somehow got back to a very large outline, and recently moved to note cards. You can do it! It will make big difference. Go for it!

Hi I am from India.....Can you make a video on how to deal with people who always want to have the last word in a conversation and want to prove the other person wrong even verifying what you say on google.... I know the best way is to avoid such people but some are in the family who cannot be avoided.... Regards

That's not a bad idea but it is a bit too specific to make a good video. That's not a generalizable skill, in other words.

For a long presentation like that, I would use the modified PowerPoint approach with a confidence monitor. That would be too many note cards to manage. I only use cards for presentations that are 10 or so minutes (or less). But longer presentations also tend to be more more like structured conversations and a little less formal. So, slides with a confidence monitor works well for that situation.
