Anja and Aila have been living on the French Riviera for so long that they know their way around, and they can speak French (kind of ;-). But even for them, navigating public transport in Nice and the surrounding places remains a bit of a struggle…
However, it is possible! Especially if you're based in Nice, you can reach almost any destination by bus or train. You just have to know how - and that's what they're going to show you today!

@@mell6398 Hello! Most convenient for us was to buy the 2 euro card from Grand Arena after arriving at the airport. We put 6 trips on that ( 1.7e / trip + 2e the card ). Also, we traveled a lot by foot in Nice but we've also taken the bus to Monaco and Eze Village which costs around 5-7e (for 3-4 persons to Monaco) and about 1.7e/person to Eze. We've also tried the train back to Nice from Monaco and it was 5e/person but I don't recommend it as it was very crammed and full of people in the afternoon ( I believe people were coming back from work at that time :D )

I would like to highlight here that those who are taking the train in the south of France to be extremely careful not to unknowingly board a TGV train with your regular tickets or cards. You'll be forced to pay a hefty payment for boarding the TGV unknowingly. The ticket masters on the TGV are pretty rude and are un-tolerant of these honest mistakes. They won't let you off by asking you to get off the next station, and all they're interested to do is to make you pay!😅
@rivierago
@rivierago 6 месяцев назад
Sorry to hear! You're right to point this out: Make sure to look for a regional train, TER, when you're just going along the coast, like from Nice to Monaco or from Nice to Cannes for example. The tickets for high speed trains (TGV) are more expensive.
@nickloong
@nickloong 6 месяцев назад
@rivierago There were several other tourists who were caught off guard, and all had to pay the hefty price. They were all pretty upset, which was totally understandable. Moreover, the TGV train was moving at very moderate speeds on that stretch of track as it was along a highly populated area. Which defeats the purpose of travelling on a bullet train. Lol😅✌️
@spencernoble5661
@spencernoble5661 6 месяцев назад
How do you know whether it’s a tgv train or not?
@nickloong
@nickloong 6 месяцев назад
@spencernoble5661 That's the catch. You won't know until the train starts and they start their ticket checks. What I noticed is that the TGVs have seat numbers, whereas the regional trains are free seating. Hope that helps!

Thank you for this video. We are going to Cote d'Azur in May, using Antibes as our base. We just found out about the Sudazur pass today. Can we purchase a ticket in Aix-en-Provence? We are taking the TER from there to Marseille to Antibes. Secondly, once you have the pass, how do you use it for future TER rides? Is there a way to use it if you are making reservations online? Lastly, if you buy a 3-day pass, do you have to use it 3 days in a row or can you choose which 3 days you use it? The video was very helpful!
@rivierago
@rivierago 4 месяца назад
Hi, thanks a lot! Very valid questions! So, 1) no you can’t buy the Pass Sudazur Explorer in Aix (they might have something similar for the department Bouches-du-Rhone over there), as it is strictly for use in the department Alpes-Maritimes (Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Menton etc) and Monaco. So for Marseille-Antibes it is not working. 2) no reservations are possible at all: for TER there are no specific seats that you can book. It’s like on the bus: you just hop on whichever one comes along next. 3) the pass is for 3 (or 5 or 7…) days in a row. So the 3 day pass is not especially cheap, just saves you time for getting tickets each time you use the tram/TER train/ bus… Have a great trip! 😄

This is awesome thank you so much. I am travelling to Nice in a few months time. Is it a lot cheaper to book local train tickets (to Monaco, Provence etc) this early? Or can I just wait until I arrive in Nice? I am looking at pre-booking tickets to Genoa because I've been told those sell out in advance.
@rivierago
@rivierago 3 месяца назад
Pre-booking the regional/local TER trains doesn’t change the fare - early booking only makes sense for TGV/long distance trains (if travelling to Paris, for example). You can’t make seat reservations either on the regional trains. So yes: you can wait until you’re in Nice. As for the train to Genoa: we honestly don’t know the Italian railway system… sorry!

Hello from Slovakia ! Such a helpful video, thank you for that. : ) Actually, I´m planning to visit Nice in April this year. So according to information on Nice Airport website, it is not possible to buy "SUDAZUR EXPLORE PASS" for unlimited travel for 3, 7 or 14 days directly at the airport, but according to your video it is possible ( if SUDAZUR EXPLORE PASS is actually Pass Sud Azur 3j/7j/14j ) . Quite confusing. ; )

Hi and thanks! When we were at the airport a few weeks ago, the pass was ready to buy at the machine (though we didn’t follow through and didn’t actually buy one), and on the website we consulted they don’t say it’s limited to certain times of the year: www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/tarifs-cartes/bons-plans/pass-sudazur-explore-en - so we’re pretty positive you can get it whenever (but no guarantee 😅)

Thank you for sharing these information. If we book tickets through the app, how do we validate the tickets? Do we need to scan anything at the station?
@rivierago
@rivierago 5 месяцев назад
Hi, thank you! trams and buses: validate inside (you need to swipe your mobile with open app, I guess - sorry, we always use the pink or orange card, so we’re only assuming how it works via mobile), and for trains it depends on the ticket you are using (some need validation, others don’t, and some you can validate yourself on your mobile).

Great and helpful tips!. I would like to ask about Tickets Azur (2,50EUR). Are Ticket Azur paper ticket or when buying Ticket Azur at tram stop ticket machine I need another card for Tickets Azur or they can be added to La Carte with Solo Tickets (1,7 EUR). If card is needed can multiple people use the same card like in case of Solo tickets? And the second question concerning Pass SudAzur - is it possible to buy it now (we will be in Nice in the beginning of May)? I have heard that it is available only from July through the first weekend in November.
@rivierago
@rivierago 2 месяца назад
Honestly, we would think you can add a Ticket Azur to your card La Carte at the tram stop ticket machines - but we have never tried it, and we couldn’t find the answer online… and you should also to able to buy several of those tickets on one card and use it for several people. (But again: we never bought a Ticket Azur) And as for the Pass Sud Azur Explore: there are no time restrictions as far as we know! They’re available year round: www.ter.sncf.com/sud-provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/tarifs-cartes/bons-plans/pass-sudazur-explore-en

Hi, thanks a lot! And yes, you're absolutely right: the pink card can still be used, and if you still have a trip on it, you can use it to get into town! If you didn't, you would take a free ride on the tram to the next station after T1 (Grand Arénas), get off and top up your card there for 1.70. They don't give you the option at the airport.

@rivierago 6 месяцев назад
Thank you! We can actually say public transport has improved a lot over the past years on the French Riviera. There’s still room for improvement, and if you live in more rural areas you basically depend on your own car. But getting around in Nice especially is so much easier nowadays due to the tram. And once you’ve figured out your regular bus line it’s simple and prices are fair. Trams, buses and trains do indeed get crowded during rush hours, so maybe try to avoid those if you can. A/C wise we can’t complain, it’s usually working just fine. Then, of course, there are strikes every now and then. But that’s a whole different story…
@smiley9987

I see. Yes,it makes sense. Inside town sounds quite practical to use public transportation instead of a car. I will be interested to try that transportation. Great help but I'm not completely clear about where you can travel using the Pass SudAzur ticket. The website indicates that it can be used to visit the Côte d'Azur, Monaco and the Alps-Maritimes. I'm planning a visit to the Cote b'Azur in May, using Nice as a base but would like to visit towns and villages between Menton and Cannes (possibly Saint-Tropez). Does this ticket cover that whole area and include all busses, trains and trams. I'm probably being overcautious but don't want to spend EU 50 for 7 day pass to find it doesn't get me where I want to go. Thanks
@rivierago
@rivierago 5 месяцев назад
Hi! With the “Pass SudAzur Explore” you can travel in all of the Alpes-Maritimes Department which covers Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Menton and the villages in the hinterland (including Eze village, Saint-Paul-de-Vence etc), and Monaco. You can you buses, the tram in Nice and regional (TER) trains (not high speed trains like TGV and Ouigo). Especially when using the train the ticket makes a lot of sense, since train tickets are more expensive than bus fares. The train makes sense because you’re not subject to road traffic. Saint-Tropez is NOT covered by the pass! It’s in the neighbouring department Var. Consider taking a boat: it’s not cheap, but public transportation from Nice to ST is loooong and there’s always traffic jams around ST in the summer season. Have a great trip!

You can reach all of the places with Pass Sud Azur Explore! It’s easiest to get this pass - but it may not be the cheapest option. But if you get this pass, you don’t have to worry about what ticket to get for which itinerary anymore. (Just don’t hop on a TGV train, they are more expensive - stick to regional TER trains - when going to Cannes or Monaco, for example)

@@kristeltjeeee yes, it’s probably cheaper without Pass Sud Azur. For MC, it’s easiest to take the train from Nice (bus is a little cheaper though). Hi, sorry it has taken some time, I had to call the transport network as I couldn’t find the answer online 😅: So, children have to pay on buses in the common networks (Lignes d‘Azur in Nice, Zou outside of Nice etc) starting at the age of 4 and they pay a full price (1.70€ on Lignes d‘Azur), so unfortunately your kids can’t share a ticket…

Should we buy separate card for pass sud azur for different passangers. My husband, i and my child will be travelling together and will buy pass sud azur. Should i buy separate card( physical card) for every one of us? Or can we use same card and load it with 3 passes?

I think for the Pass Sud Azur Explore you need to buy separate cards for each person. Children under 18 need their own ticket (which is just a little cheaper) as well and need to be accompanied by an adult. Unfortunately their website doesn’t say if even children under 6 have to pay. You’re talking about the Pass Sud Azur Explore? Not rechargeable, I’m afraid, at least not for one day, just the 3-7-14 day offers (if I remember correctly). For Italy you need an extra ticket anyway, so the best is probably getting a TER train ticket from Nice to your destination in Italy for that day.

You need a „ticket Azur“ for € 2.50 that allows you to start with a Lignes d‘Azur Bus in Nice and change on a Zou bus to get to Monaco or Beaulieu with Zou bus no. 607 for example. It tried to charge my „La Carte“ (Lignes d‘Azur) with this ticket via app, but it was not possible. You can purchase the „ticket Azur“ at the tram ticket machines (and in Zou and Lignes d‘Azur agencies I suppose). If you use bus no 15 from Nice to Beaulieu you should be fine with La Carte, as it is part of the Lignes d‘Azur network as far as we know

Hi, kids a free on public transport in Nice as long as they are less than 4 years old (busses + tram / Lignes d'Azur), same goes for regional trains (TER PACA), and it's probably the same for other bus networks outside of Nice as well. Not sure we understand your question about what lines to avoid with the Pass SudAzur... You can use any bus, tram and regional train (=TER) within the department Alpes-Maritimes and Monaco. Just be careful not to hop on TGV trains (high speed trains), they're not included.
