Hei hei! I hope this episode can help explain the public transportation system in Oslo! Feel free to leave any questions you might have and I'll do my best to answer. Also, a special thanks to my patrons who support me and enables me to make more (and better) videos :) www.patreon.com/norwaywithpal
Hi Pal, when you buy a 24 hr ticket on Ruter including the airport zone, zone 2 and the City centre zone, does it cover the vy train connecting to the airport as well? I need to travel from the airport, go to my airbnb in Lorenskog, then go to city centre via bus, and take a return train to the airport the next morning. Will this whole journey be covered in the 24-hr ticket?
@@karankalani4211 If taking VY's train in Oslo or Akershus county you are allowed to use ruter's regional tickets (zone 1 and 2...), but outside these zones you are obligated to use VY's or FLYTOGET's own tickets. I think the airport train has its own tickets and prices. Hope this helps!
T-bane is short for tunnel-bane 😊, refering to how it runs through tunnels underground ! And as additional info, you can ride all the different means of transportation on the same ticket (i.e. take the trikk and then a boat to the islands)
Apologies for interrupting your tour today in Vigelandsparken! It was great to briefly meet you and thank you for your travel videos…this is my first solo holiday abroad & your videos really were a great help! Thank you again, Katie
This is such a supremely helpful and professional video. If I didn't know any better, I would think the video is sponsored by your country's tourism center. 😂
Very informative! When I visit a city for the first time, I personally prefer to walk everywhere (if distances are bearable) so that I can see how’s the city, not just the touristy areas. But, of course, if you don’t have much time, it’s great to know the means to move around. I’ll definitely check the trikk and the T-bane next time I’m in Oslo 🤗 Btw, I agree with other people commenting on the quality of the video. You’re putting a lot of effort on it and it shows 👏☺️
Hey Pål. This was such an enjoyable episode to watch. So much useful information for the next time I pop down south. Tight script, well edited. Well done !!
Bravo Pål. This was so well done and so much information packed into a beautify enjoying video. You nailed it with this one. 👏🏻The huge impact it has to show what you are talking about. Such a huge different in quality. Just standing in front of the buss, or standing on the boat talking, or go off at the fram museum like that. Perfect. There is only one thing I found that could serve as a distraction. Some of the times, the music was just a little bit to loud over your voice. it did not "duck" enough. Other from that. I'm talking notes. You really impress me with these videos. Keep it up mate 👏🏻🇳🇴
Thanks a lot Thomas! I always appreciate your comments. I take notes on what you say about the loud music. Sometimes is sounds different from one setup to another, but this is something I need to look into. Thanks again! :)
@@norwaywithpal Bose headsets are great for noise cancelling and they sounds very nice with a deep bass, but they are not studio headsets. For editing you want headsets that gives you the 'true' sound.
I'm visiting Norway right now and I wish I knew this useful information before 😂 but it has been pretty entertaining figuring out how the transport system works here. I love how clean and organized the city is and how kind and friendly people are. The only thing is that you must prepare your pocket because your estimated budget possibly won't be enough to afford every expense in here. Oslo is kind of expensive but it's totally worth it since the place offers a lifetime experience and unforgettable memories.
Thank you! I would travel with my teenage daughter and of course see a lot and also like to experience a bit of shopping & Café‘s in addition to museums and culter so that is fun for her ( and me!). Your clip was very informative not taking the tourist buses - simply relaying on public Transport. Thx 🙋🏻♀️👍
Sights and museums will be open, but there will be less people in town. It's a good time of year to be in Oslo :) I would try out a floating sauna and jump into the fjord@@faygarden3650
Just a quick note that the 32 bus is no longer in service. Instead, i reccomend other routes like 31 or 30 but either way it is up to you where you want to go.
My wife and I (Canadians) were already excited to go visit Norway. Now we are even more so! Thank you for your video. (Many of our friends think greatly of Norway and the Norwegians and they envy us for going there.)
Great video Pål. Can I ask you a very practical question please. When you buy a ticket on the Ruter app, how do you enter and exit metro stations, buses, and trams. As an example, in London you have to touch in and out on the Tube but only touch in on buses. In Stockholm you only touch in on the metro (not out) but on trams an inspector scans your card/app. I think this is really practical information for tourists. Thanks.
Hi Dean, good question! There are no barriers for going in and out of metro stations, and you board buses and trams through any door. No tapping in or out. If you got the ticket on your phone you are good. If you don’t it and there is a control then you are in trouble ;)
Hi Pål, your video is great and is a good guide which can help me to use public transport in Oslo. I'm going to visit the capital and some other cities in December.
Great information.Looking forward to visiting Oslo this December as a solo traveller.I always like to have as much info as I can before I travel to a new city .
Hi! Your videos are very helpful, i am travelling to Oslo then Drammen by myself in a few weeks and i am nervous. Your videos give me a great insight into what to expect, Tusen Takk !!
Thank you Pal for your informative videos! Your videos have helped the 3 of us with our travel plans for Oslo/Bergen/Flam which is happening in a few weeks time, very excited. Do you have any suggestions where we can securely store our larger luggage items in Oslo while we take our trip to Bergen/Flam for a few days?
You are completely right! I have to say I totally forgot about that. Well, if you have the ticket on your phone (in the app), you only show it if there is a control. A paper ticket needs to be validated onboard buses and trams, and when you enter into a metro station
I was like "why would I need to watch this" but wow! all those tips ... and I am really looking forward to the B1 Ferry! That route seems interesting :)
@@norwaywithpal Wanna seek your best advice regards to Tromso and Lofoten Islands. Is there a need to book n hotel at Lofoten Islands or hotel stay at Tromso will be good enough and have a road trip to the islands please?
This is a great video, thank you! 😊 My friend and I will be visiting in December, and definitely want to take a ride on a boat. Do the transport ferry and the 'tourist' fjord cruise sail the same areas on the fjord? Is one better than the other?
Pål: Really enjoyed your video. My wife and I spent a week in Oslo in 2019 (just prior to the pandemic), and took a train to Bergen (and spent five days there as well). I viewed your videos for both locations, and it brought back some great memories of the amazing time we had while in Norway. I just came across your sailing videos by accident. I am rebuilding a Spidsgatter (Sagitta 30, Aage Utzon design) and plan to sail from Canada to Norway in 2025-26. Look forward to seeing more of your sailing adventures for tips to cruising in those waters. Great videos, and looking forward to more. Fair winds!
Hi Mikal! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍 I love the looks of a Spidsgatter. The Sagitta seems like a very seaworthy vessel. I hope you’ll get in touch when you make it over here, I’d love to meet and hear about your cruise . More sailing videos will come btw. Working on one from last summer :)
What a brilliant video! It was lovely to see some of the sights from the last time I visited. Didn't realise the boats by city hall were public transport... that's a great tip! Also, the video quality is stunning - brilliant work. Thank you for making this video! 😊💛
Great video! I have been to Oslo before but I’m attending a concert by Oslo philharmonic this Friday, good to know these options! Best regards from Edinburgh😊 PS: if you happen to read this - I have a bit time on sat morning wonder if it’s worth a trip to Vestkanttorvet? I like to visit flea antique markets in foreign cities. Thanks!
Thanks for uploading this well-thought-out video! Will be visiting Oslo soon and this definitely helps me to understand more about the public transportation there. One question though: do you have to scan the bought tickets (from RuterApp) when getting onto the bus/tram/trains?
Useful tips, thank you! I have a citybreak planned in May, so excited 😁 What ferry route do you recomend for a tourist? I mean what is the most spectacular one? I am little bit confused which one should I choose. I would like to have some stops and hop on back on the next one as well.
Greetings from Romania and thank you for the very useful information,Pal! We can ride all the different means of public transportation, on the same ticket, includig the ferry from Aker Brygge? Thank you and all the best!
Very impressive. our city Victoria, BC is much smaller but I wish we had such choice in transportation as Oslo. The larger city of Vancouver has some more choices for transportation but I don't think it is as good as Oslo's. And Oslo looks so clean.
Hei Louise, thanks for watching the episode. I've heard Victoria is a beautiful place, and hope to visit some day. Oslo has gotten a pretty decent facelift during the last 20 years and is now more cleaner that its ever been, and the public transportation is pretty darn good :)
Very nice information. The public transportation system looks very similar like in Helsinki, Finland. I have been to Oslo only once. I was there with my motorhome, spent a night in Bogstad camping and then on the next day drove near to the center, parked there and only walked around. Unfortunately I didn't have more time to spend there that time.
@@norwaywithpal welcome! One difference I noticed is that Helsinki has only one metro line that has two branches, and trains are used more for local traffic than in Oslo. I surely will come again some day. I have been driving around your country here and there between Mandal and Vardø and will do it more in the future :) By the way that "trikk" is a nice word. In Helsinki slang trams are called "spåra" which is pronounced so that "å" is short. That's of course "stolen" from Swedish.
@@norwaywithpal yeah as a tram is officially spårvagn in Swedish. Finnish does not use letter å at all, but in slang words like that it can appear :) My latest trip to Norway was in autumn 2021 when I drove to Vardø and Hamningberg. I like to visit extreme points.
I’ve been in Oslo for 4 days and tomorrow I pick up my rental car tomorrow morning at 9. I’m driving to Aurland with a stop at that Kistofos museum you mentioned. I have countryside hostel booked in the Aurland area, I think I’ve planned it with enough time so I won’t be rushed. Do you think so?
Pol you have done it , once again. Your video is highly informative and makes the viewer want to visit your country pronto. You are truly providing a great service not just to us but your countrymen as well. Thanks Jorge Santis
Hallo Pål! Very comprehensive and well-explained video. Oslo looks beautiful and would love to visit the city when it snows. Which month gets the most snow in Oslo? Takk og ha det fint!
Thanks for a great video, we are coming to Oslo as part of a cruise at Christmas on 2024, can you tell me how far away the centre is from the port please?
Hi there! The cruise port is right downtown, next to the Akershus Fortress. There has been talk about moving it further out into the fjord though, but not sure if that is going to happen in 2023
great video! I'm visiting for the first time at the end of May and this is very helpful! I'm from Winnipeg, Canada! I'm flying into Copenhagen first, staying for 4 days, then taking the overnight Ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, staying in Oslo for 4 days, then renting a car and driving to Bergen (and maybe other places) for the next 4-5 days, then coming home. Is that a good plan? Any other suggestions? I've never been to Scandinavia before. I only have 2 weeks of Vacation (Yes Employers in Canada are just as bad as the ones in the US about giving Vacation days). I plan to record some of my driving in Norway like you see on my RU-vid channel in Canada!. Cheers!
All tickets need to be validated. You either buy it in the app and it validates automatically, or if you have a paper ticket you validate it by scanning it either before (metro) or onboard (bus ferry tram)
Fantastic video!!! perfect amount of detail without overwhelming the traveller 🎉 Is there a kiosk for tickets at the airport? Is it cheeper to buy a 7 day pass than 24hour....I'd be using it for 5 of the 7 days. (Recent reviews of Ruter app are not very positive 😮(
Hi there! Thank you :) Ignore the reviews of Ruter and use the app, that is my recommendation. 7 day pass costs more than a 24 hour ticket yes, but it sounds like it is what you need. So if you are going to Oslo then buy a 7 day pass for zone 1. Going from the airport you can add the zones that you need for a small extra fee
