I have an old house, I jacked the house up a bit and installed some new flooring. The one door wouldn’t open with the new flooring so I took it off the hinges and skimmed the bottom of the door with a with a circular saw. I’ve also thought about using old hand planes the next time.

Yes Dimitris, very important to watch the grain direction. I did exactly the same as you yesterday :( , but fortunately it is on the bottom side of the work and will not be seen. Also to have a wire brush to clean the rasp, file to reduce the clogging of the teeth. I have a tool called a card file which is like a hair brush with very short wire hairs to to clean the teeth. I think it cost me $12
@ScrapwoodCity

I think I missed something...When using the rasp or file, do yo make contact with the workpiece on the forward stroke and lift on the backwards stroke? Thus saving the sharpness of the tool??
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 4 года назад
You will actually feel the cut. My rasps cut in the forward motion. Like it happens with the saws, the teeth cut with the straight side facing against the work piece. Good question though!

@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 5 лет назад

Why? It is a pretty fast method as far as hand tools are concerned. And the level of difficulty isn't high! A spokeshave, a draw knife or other hand tools might be much more difficult to master!

There is one absolutely critical characterisitc of rasps that tends to be overlooked by instructional videos. They are *inherently right-handed tools* Unless you somehow have a custom-made rasp (which do exist) - the teeth are *always* cut or milled to suit opeation where the handle is held in the right hand and the left-hand is used to grap the tip. Holding a rasp with your left hand will produce dramatically-inferior results- both in terms of the rate of material removal and an increased tendency to rip/splinter it. It is absolutely essential that an operator use his right hand to grasp the handle. No exception can be made for this unless the rasp has been custom-manufactured to suit left-handed operation.
