The file is a basic tool, but it would be a mistake to call it simple. Files come in a variety of shapes, cuts, and coarseness depending on the job they’re designed to do.

This is a great series. It's exactly the stuff I would want someone to explain to me in the shop if they showed me how to use a tool I'm not already familiar with.

This was one of the sickest, slickest, sonically delicious How-To’s I have ever seen. In Any Genre. I rarely prefer, nor benefit from, the no-narration written caption only format, most certainly that’s a hang-up particularized to myself & those with similar overlapping cognitive & personality subsets. Then, if you had played me the score music separate & disassociated from any accompanying video, I would have said that it was too good of a mix, such that I expected it would distract far too much, rendering the enclosed lessons outside of my grasp. It was so good that it shattered even those esoteric & idiosyncratic expectations, along with every other imaginable effortlessly. Well done.

a file also has a hollow site and a crowned side, when straight filing it is important to use the crowened side for this otherwise you will not get it flat

For flat filing, it can be really hard to keep your hands level becausse the work forms a pivot point between your two hands and the leaverage keeps changing during your stroke. It is much easier to maintain a straight even cut if you hold the file in your dominant hand and only lightly guide it with your weak hand near the base of the file.

@anthonyjones657
@anthonyjones657 4 года назад
Just a tip from a toolmaker.... Do not lift the file and do not use it side ways if you are want precision results. Files are not perfectly flat or straight. If you are trying to file a precision flat surface. Color in the surface with a marker. Use the bow of the file to take down high spots on the surface.

I read in an article where machonist was taught to use push stoke for general work and preserving the file the back and forth motion is where you use it when getting close to dimension to make sure you dont lose the level and the feel for the file

+littlestworkshop I have a couple dozen files and I literally never find a use for them. There is nothing I can think of that a file does better than any other tool in my shop. I'm pretty much always going to reach for a dremel, die grinder, angle grinder, belt sander or mill. It makes me wonder why files are still in use at all.
@littlestworkshop
@littlestworkshop 8 лет назад
+Geahk Burchill I have all those tools and still use files.
@GeahkBurchill
@GeahkBurchill 8 лет назад
***** Maybe it's just the way my shop is set up but my air tools are always within arms reach and my files are in a drawer in my tool chest. I've never had the urge to go to my tool wall for the files when I have an air tool right at hand. There are plenty of other hand tool where this is not the case. A block plane does something only a block plane can do. A chisel does what only a chisel can do. There are hundreds of hand-tools in my shop that don't feel obsolete. So, out of curiosity and totally with respect, what the heck do you use your files for?

Nothing wrong with draw filing. Only use a singe cut file for draw filing. And remember to only pull when you have the handle in your left hand, and only push when you hold it in your right hand.

+Mr Mürk I learned how to do that when I was 4 years old... and I was a fast learner. I doubt a 4 year old could do a maker project for arduino or for custom cases, or custom chamfered coffee tables with tiled inlay, and do this without some direction with a good set of workshop or parent/grandparent files. Also not everyone has a really good set of files, they are on a downtrend with less folks using basic fab tech, we just spool up a 3-d printer and let the computer do the work.
@h0lx
@h0lx 8 лет назад
And that is what's wrong with the Maker culture nowadays in a nutshell, its all just "Buy an arduino, then these 3 kits, download this code, follow this wiring picture(noone can even read schematics these days) and bam! call it DIY"
@Cerevisi
@Cerevisi 8 лет назад
+Mr Mürk I agree, This video DID remind me to buy a good set of files though, so there is that! I used to do a fair bit of machining, I don't have a 3-d printer (yet) or even a dremmel set. This video is actually promoting the old school ways!

Fireball Tool pretty exhaustively tested whether backward strokes damage the teeth, and it is false. Seems like it'd be true, but it's not, it's only ever parroted by people who never tested it and never saw it happen, just got told baseless boogeyman stories.

@littlestworkshop
@littlestworkshop 8 лет назад
+Bart Jennings Horrendous? Honestly it is like people are in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Files or something. The file is much harder than the card, the card is applied far less frequently than the workpiece (which may well be steel) the force that can be applied is limited. It would be interesting to see just how long it takes to blunten a file through proper use of a file card or brush, my guess is far longer than most people will ever use the file full stop.
@lukasdon0007
@lukasdon0007 8 лет назад
+littlestworkshop Some people just need some silly reason to either A) justify why they are so bad at making stuff; B) feel better than the 'common people'; C) have something else to focus on instead of actually using the damn tool. You see the same with cameras, were most internet cirkle-jerkers are only ever talking about gear acquisition and maintenance, but never actually go out to make photos. And with grammar nazis there is a similar problem: people who actually suck at language (i.e. bad writers with contorted sentences and mediocre understanding of the nuances of language) constantly bitch about some stupid grammatical rule or some silly error someone else made. All to create a false sense of superiority without having to be talented or doing the hard work of producing awesome products (be that DIY, photos or literature).
