I'm a big dude. 6'4, 275lbs-300lbs. When covid hit rings have been a blessing for me. Couldn't even do 1 ring push up. Now I'm dishing out 6-8 reps a set and it definitely shows. Ring pike push ups are another one of my favs.

Love seeing another big guy doing calisthenics. I’m 6 ft 9 myself. Started as a complete beginner on gymnastics rings 5 years ago at 163 kg (about 350+ lbs). Rings were great for me despite the height and weight disadvantage cuz of the ability to play with leverages. Incline push ups and rows, foot assisted chin ups and pull ups. Eventually, working to more horizontal body positions and less foot assistance the leaner and stronger I got. Only thing you can’t really do as a calisthenics beginner on rings is any kind of vertical press (dips/OHP). For that I say just get free weights and dip bars on Amazon. I live in Nigeria and made my dumbbells and fixed barbells and dip bars with cement and metal welding cuz most things on Amazon don’t ship here. So everyone else doesn’t have an excuse 😂

You're absolutely right about locking out on rings being so difficult. I'd consider myself pretty good at the basic body weight exercises and finally tried out rings for the first time, i tried dips first and oh god i dropped like a rock and i couldn't even lock out on my first two reps that ended up more like half reps.

Interesting that rings doesn't necessarily correlate to strength training as well as straight bar. I would have assumed because rings are so difficult. A weighted exercise on the rings would translate to much greater strength than the same weight on stable surface.

I doubt weights are better than rings when training for raw strength. It's a lot like doing a machine shoulderpress versus doing weighted ones. Sure, you might get more weight on the machine, although you'll have far less functional strength than someone who uses free weights.

It is still for beginner, but it requires more stability. You can start with knee push-up, inverted row until you build great basic to full push-up, dip and pull-up.

"For Hypertrophy, good. For strength, not so good". "Stable transfers to stable". Hmmm... I'm not sure I would agree with you there. I've been training with rings for 2 years now, and the dynamic stabilization component that it provides has done wonders in terms of teaching my body how to stabilize every cm of it when training either for Hypertrophy, strength or skills. For example, after 6 months of training with rings, my Scapula and the muscles surrounding the area had become much more stronger than they were before to transfer them to skill training like the planche. It was WAY easier for me to nail the bent arm straddle planche, the Mechanical Advantage Planche Push-Up (MAPPU), and the frog planche, all on the floor. This was after doing push Ups and dips for 2-4 reps in a regular training program. Okay, a couple disclaimers before moving on: 1- While it is true that I had trained for the planche in the past (meaning in 2017 and then in 2019), the training was not consistent and I would quickly switch to other exercises and forgetting about the planche. So, I was back to training it in 2021, the same year that I bought rings. It was after training consistently with the rings that my planche journey became much easier than before. 2- 2019 was the first year where I would train for the planche with a little bit (just a little bit) of consistency. However, like I said previously, I would quickly switch to other exercises that don't have anything in common with the planche, like the one-arm bodyrow or the Dragon Flag, for example, and completely forgetting about the planche, to the point that even the easiest Pseudo-planche Push up hold would be quite hard for me (with proper technique of course). 3- Of course, when training for skills like the planche or front lever on fixed surfaces, the level of strength and stability required is already demanding enough to find yourself devoted to training it consistently while you slowly climb your way up there. When it comes to the same skills on unstable surfaces (like rings), the demand is even greater, BUT with a high chance of transferability to the fixed surface strength. So, in summary. To me, rings have helped me to transfer ALL my strength gains (both relative and absolute) from unstable to stable because of the dynamic stabilization component and the high degree of body awareness that I have learned to acquire thanks to this. If anyone has experienced something different that's fine as well, but for me I would say that rings have been the best investment in training equipment that I have ever made, and my gains skyrocketed after half a year of training with them.
@LucidStrike
@LucidStrike Год назад
Yeah, that was one of the few times I disagreed with Daniel immediately. Stability is the base of real strength performance, so training stability fortifies the strength built on it.

There is a huge difference on rings for exercises like dips and push-ups but for me it’s almost the same for pull-ups.
@JorgeMP53
@JorgeMP53 Год назад
Yes, it is. It's much easier to do dips on paralettes or a straight bar than on rings. The fixed surface will have you worrying less about balance and control, while rings will force you to stabilize yourself because obviously they're not fixed. Edit: actually, not paralettes, but parallel bars.
