Hello RU-vid, here is a how-to video of desoldering with the solder wick. There are many ways of desoldering, but in this video, we are going to find out how to properly use a solder wick to desolder. For example, we are going to work on a XBOX One motherboard(where the HDMI out port exist). Before you begin to learn how to desolder, you will need a soldering iron, a solder wick, and a flux. 3 things, and that is it, but flux is the key here. It is super important when it comes to desoldering(actually, it is important for soldering too). A good flux will make your job really easier. We will let you know all the important tips while you are working with solder wick(like the soldering iron temperature, how and when to apply flux, etc). Are you ready to do it? Let's do it.

Perfect video. Wanted to make sure I wasn't doing things wrong. This is straight and to the point.

Thanks for the video. I've had solder wick get stuck a few times.

Well done brother.. liked & supported.. One Qs. What's that type of greyish flux paste that come pre-mixed with tin and lead that we can apply on the connectors and just place small components on top and easily solder with heat gun ? Would you mind telling me specifically what's it called because I have trouble searching for it in Amazon?

Nice video. Thank you. Do you have the link or name of the despenser you used to clean the board with??

I think it was a immunization booster syrup with a dropping pipette. After I finished with them, I cleaned up the glass bottle and the dropping pipette then I filled up with 99% isopropyl alcohol.

I do it exactly like you do in the video. I have my iron set to 325c because LED become very temperamental at 350c. It always seems like I can’t melt the solder thru the wick. Even tried preheating the wick just in case and still no luck. The solder won’t melt underneath the wick unless I touch both the blob and the wick simultaneously which often causes heat damage to small IC. I can use a little or too much flux and the outcome is the same. What am I doing wrong? Can someone provide some constructive advice?

Maybe your soldering tool's poor performance?? What tools do you use?

Some low quality soldering irons drop the temperature dramatically as soon as you touch anything on a logic board

how long can this desoldering wick be worn?
@PTITBROTHERGravenhurst
@PTITBROTHERGravenhurst 3 года назад
When the wick absorbs enough solder, you gotta cut it off and use a fresh soldering wick

Is it possible I just got bad wick? It doesn't absorb the solder, instead it moves away from it when it melts. I mean, I got it for free with something from AliExpress, but still, I think there shouldn't be anything you can break on it.

Try to use higher temp and use more flux. That will help

You forgot to mention what a good flux is? Brand, pen? How about a link?

I think I did. For the best flux, I use AMTECH flux. Other tools, it is okay to use any. I think the flux is the most important thing when it comes to soldering.

Liquid flux pens that cost no less than $8. That’s all you need to know. They work like paint markers so all hacks work. I use one that was $8 on Amazon. It’s often better quality than the solder itself. Also fun fact: did you know that solder expires? I didn’t.

use flux, temp at 350 - 400 degrees, add more solder if needed. There's really no other tips on using a solder wick. Unless u have any specific questions?
@gunsofsteele

350 degrees celcius is 662 degrees farenheit. I don't think I'll be putting 660 degrees farenheit on my PCBs. I go around 400 degrees farenheit and it works fine.

The key is to be quick. I tin the tip heavily, use flux on everything, and thread the wick through. I never hold the braid in place and put a dry iron on top. The solder on the tip, braid, and board should be molten for the entire 2 second process. It should literally look like you are mopping up a small spill with a paper towel. I just got a Weller 175 which operates at 538C. If there is enough room for the 5/8" tip, this can all happen in less than a second. Of course the biggest mistake I see is people not adding 63/37 solder first to the factory lead free solder on the board. Solder wicking is virtually impossible with pure lead free solder.

I hate that it looks so easy, but in my case, it's not... At all

Because I know my soldering gears. You need to keep practice and understand your soldering gears first. Then, everything will be easier eventually.

@@PTITBROTHERGravenhurst it's already starting to get easier, it's therapeutic at times.. Still a bit frustrating when my tip won't hold tin..
