This artist is an excellent teacher. I'm learning a lot and will scour his other videos before I start cutting and carving in stone. Thank you Athar for sharing this knowledge and experience. Also, very curious where you get your marble (or any other stone) that is large enough to make portrait busts with? If you are living near Venice, it is obvious where, but in the US, I have yet to find any marble suppliers and only one soft stone supplier, just north of me near Vancouver. Hopefully I can acquire some marble someday to push my work further. Thanks.

Nice safety video. I grew up working with my father and uncle, who had a marble flooring business and i have seen all kinds of accidents. Fingers cuted, etc. I personally have broken my middle finger from a grinder. Something that im sure you know but forgot to mention, is the quality if the cutting discs. Nowadays you can find cheap ,cutting discs that tend to get destroyed really easy and can hurt you , even when wearing protective gear. I think when we come across a piece of equipment that is cheaper than usual we don't think about what can go wrong. But it only takes a second when you are tired , distracted or not in balance while working to end up with a piece of cheap disc stuck in your forehead, leg etc.

Love this video. Some great tips thanks Athar. I was wondering if you still cut vertically with the course carbide blade or if that is used to cut chamfers by holding it horizontally?
@AtharJaber
@AtharJaber 3 года назад
Thank you Dylan. The course carbide disc is used to quickly shape abstract form or large round volumes. it's a bit less dangerous (or perhaps just a perception) than the cutting disc and I have used it in all positions. I personally never used it to shape chamfers, but just because I didn't have the chance to do so. I guess you could use it for that purpose as well. Let me know how it goes!

Great tips - which I all follow regularly working professionally as a granite sculptor. However, I find it too dangerous to have the wheel turn toward me. My trick to avoid dust blocking view and clogging the breathing mask: 1) I have an electric air blower mounted on a tripod and have it blow the dust from the point of action away from me. OR - not as practical and universal - 2) I attached a water drip system to my 230mm Makita guard, releasing a thin flow of water to the center of the wheel. I added a spray shield to protect the machine from muddy dust. No dust, no muddy spray in the machine. No electric shock. Flipside: works only when machine is held straight and upwards. However, I strongly recommend version1! An I would not remove the guard! If a piece of the wheel breaks off and flies to your head or body even the plastic shield (which you recommended but didn't wear) and regular work cloths won't avoid serious injuries. Use the guard. And if not get a steel screen shield like it's used by chainsaw pros. You only have two eyes - and they should last a lifetime.

Unfortunately, if you’re simply working by hand, there are no shortcuts. The best way to learn to cut straight is experience. Do it regularly and the quality of your cut will improve. Best suggestion I can give it to trust your innate equilibrium system to guide you into keeping the tool straight and angular. And relax your muscles, don’t grip too tight. 🙌
