I bought two of the ECT3000. I returned the first one thinking it was shorted internally. I was loosing single half way down the green wire when connecting to OBD2 plug. The instructions booklet dose explain how to calibrate the tool, but only after fiddling around with it, watching videos and spending hours with multiple long breaks (out of frustration) did I come to the same conclusions. Your video was extremely helpful, it confirmed I’m using the tool correctly, so thank you very much.
Dude great job and you are right no one in any of the videos I’ve watched so far has mentioned anything about turning the key off or locking on to the probed wire signal when it starts to beep really fast like you’re spot on my guy, for a moment there I thought the tool was too glitchy when I was using mine but I still found the problem in 30 min unlike the other 2 mechanics who ordered a light switch and a BCM 😂😂
I'm an automotive locksmith and the same happens when watching guys make lost keys on YT. They leave out the small but important details. It's always those details that lead to success or not. It's actually very annoying when they do that. I always think of new guys who are going to watch them without knowing any better and fail over and over.
I have to chase a dead coil wire on my Jeep tomorrow. I feel like I finally understand how to use that tool properly after watching your video. Thanks!
problem is thou is if one wire is rubbed thru or broken chances are other wires in the harness are also getting to the same point. I work in heavy diesel and the quick and easy way it to run an overlay but to do a job right is to find the spot and fix it right. May save you a ton of headache down the road@@mikesabin8568
This would be an open in your wiring. A short would be either the wire is rubbed through and is touching ground or two bare wires touching each other. Open is a break in the wire. Just a friendly note. 😊
It's only broke because I broke it the rest of the way after I found it. I was getting ready to cut out the bad sections that rubbed against the frame to make the repairs. However I thought i should make this video before I preceded with the repairs. But yea original they was intact and feeding intermittent voltage to the injectors. I have video showing that happening before I even found the break. Which is how I diagnosed the problem but then had to find the location of the short.
Thanks Buddy, I had the same problem, thank you for sharing I’ll use it tomorrow and find that Open wire, I didn’t know how to lock the receiver, you made a lot of sense thanks again, keep up the great work 👍
Thank you I've also had it for a year and haven't used it because the directions didn't make sense to me. I'm not a mechanic but you explained it very simple and now I'm using it!! Thank you.
8" and it's red? I'm getting flashbacks to prom night Just saying... Thank you for this very informative video. Much appreciated. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd House On the Left (but call before stopping by)
Wow, now I know how to use my 3000! Can't thank you enough for showing how to lock in the probe. I watched several vids from 'Power Probe' and they failed to mention that critical piece of info. You need to get royalties from them for your showing THEIR customers how to use THEIR tool they are trying to sell! Thanks again!!
Did you have to probe the Green wire of the PowerProbe into the actual wire that was broken ? Or could you probe the Green wire into any wire of that particular harness/ bundle and find a break in any wire of that particular harness /bundle ?
Very helpful video … the biggest impact comes from seeing all the extra effort you applied in other areas of the vehicle … thanks for sharing your success…
Thanks homie I needed this video so bad I’ve had my power prove set for 3 years and until I watched your video I didn’t know how to use it!!!!! Great video thanks!!!!
Sir if wire connecting with electronic controller then this tool can track.i try to track one wire this wire connection with B.L.A.M controller this tool can't track. Can possible to help why no track wire
Thanks, I try to be short an to the point. And sometimes it's hard especially when making a video in the spur of the moment. I have gotten better though with leaving out the fat. I use to be horrible 😂 but I think I can still do better though. Thank you so much!
This is because it was originally a short. Then I broke the wire fully to make the repair and that's when I decided to make the video. I guess technically it's both just not at the same time. However I will say that before I broke the wire to repair it, it would switch back an forth from a short to a open. All I would do it move the harness around and restart the ect3000 and it would show a open. I'd move the harness around again and restart the ect3000 then it would show as a open. So yes sometimes this happens and can be confusing.
1. Should I use the ect3000 equipment after disconnecting the +, - terminal of the battery? Can I use the ect3000 without disconnecting the car +, - terminal? 2. Can I use the ect3000 equipment while the car is turned on?
I'm not sure if you need the battery connected or not. I never could find any information about that. I can tell you that I've used it both ways, with it the battery disconnected and with the battery connected. From what I know you don't need the car on simply because the device sends a signal through the wire when its connected to the positive side of the battery. If you have the car on then that might make it harder to find the broken wire. I don't know everything about this tool. I've had to teach myself most of what I do know about it. I'd recommend doing some research to get accurate information about the ect3000. Thanks for watching.
An open circuit is when there is a break in a closed circuit connection. That is very different than a short. A short is a direct connection between two positions in a circuit that are NOT supposed to be directly connected. An actual short can often lead to overheating and burning/melting of wires, insulation and fire.
The wire originally wasn't broke all the way it was melted and burned then I finish breaking it to do the repair. It shorted out on the metal frame and melted the wire. I don't remember If i mentioed it on the video but I definitely did in the comments.
Thank you for the video. I keep having a window/door lock fuse blow when the key turns to the on and run positions. It wasn't any of the switches, so I decided to order one of these. I was just outside trying to pinpoint my issue and I thought when the light came on in the center that was where my break was. So, I started to removed the hardness from the drivers kick panel to the door. It started raining, so I came inside. I am glad I found your video. I never locked it in. :)
Do you have to disconnect the circuit from both sides of just one for example if testing a coil would you check at the coil and disconnect the connector at the pcm to prevent damage?
To be honest it’s a great tool but you must say it is intended for inexperienced techs. Techs who have been in the trade 20plus years like myself, you won’t find that in my toolbox but it is a great tool
@@handyscapersllc a wiring diagram and a very good multi meter. Plus when you have 25plus years experience you know where problems happens. It’s common sense to check all clamping points and where the harness splits or turns is where usually problems are on high end European cars it’s usually where the harness takes a turn around the chassis for example
I just ordered one going to try this on a motorcycle hopfully it will save me alot of money before I need to take it to harley davidson 😂 my left speaker does not work only getting power to one wire I hope this will help me fix it before next week.
Great video man but I have a few questions. I was trying to see where you were probing to connect but could not tell. So i am having a non responsive wiper motor issue so i am starting from the connector plugged in and back probe it the way I think you have it. Now as soon as i connect the green on 4 pin connector but one pin the machine immediatly shows “short” and ringing it’s tone, i get it i have a short and got find it, but if it is constantlt ringing and so far it is hard to understand the machine. I have changed the wiper switch, some actions on it work “trip miles button” and one other thing but the whole wiper system is non responsesive. I do have power at the connector because all light up except for one. I have traced that wire as far as i could go with the machine and looks ok but still no dice! You got any insight?
Make sure your keys are out of the ignition so there is no question of power being supplied. Be sure to connect the battery connections 1st. Then try again. Is your device new or have you used it before? If it's new then let's make sure it not a defaulted device. Before probing the whipper connection try locking the signal of the green wire before probing anything. After locking the signal then test To make sure you get the steady beep when you get close to the green signal wire. If this works then your device should be good. The most important thing is to be sure there is no power going through the vehicle
Also check that the one pins is wired and making a connection to the pin. This could be your fualty short. So if the wire broke off the pin then it would probably show a short immediately
Thanks for the response. Your first response i am all squared away there. Your second response i am a little confused about, so i take a paperlip and put in the one pin unplugged from the wiper motor and i have done both ways unplugged lol as well and it yells short. Guess I have to keep grinding
Thank you for clarifying how to use this device. I wasn't sure if i was using it right. Ultimately, I was but you explaining the fine details made my job easier. I'm a diesel mechanic, and thank you.
Thank you. It originally was a short. My issue would come and go and eventually got worse then once I found it I finished breaking the wire and that caused my issue to be permanent until I repaired it. At the moment i was breaking the wire i thought to record a video about it. Does that mean it was a short originally and then once I finished breaking the wire that made it an open? The tool was even saying a short. So I'm confused. Let me know so I know now. Thanks.
@handyscapersllc I would imagine the tool was identify a short as it was technical a complete circuit to ground through the injector. Either way great video I watch others to remind me
You'll be amazed how many cheapskate mechanics are out there... They rather not spend the money on the right tool that will save them time on fixing a problem and rather just waste useless time because of their incompetent ego! 😂
No like he stated he should have just used this power probe 3000 from the get go. Skipped all the other wire harness tear down. In the end using the tool and tracing that wire was the correct decision with respect to diag
@@nordicpride9708 why? Running a new wire is 1000 times faster and new…. Explain how finding the broken wire and wasting time is a good idea…. I disagree with you 100%
This is actually a my company vehicle and wanted to keep original as much as possible. My personal truck I most definitely would of done that to. I should also note that this particular wire feeds many other functions.
@@handyscapersllc the fact it powered other things doesn’t matter at all. A fused jumper wire powering those injectors have nothing to do with it powering other things. It still would have worked, but whatever
@@mikesabin8568 I don’t understand how it would power other things if you just ran it to the injector from the battery your bypassing everything else at the wire would’ve fed
