StandBy Mode is a new Lock Screen feature in iOS 17 that activates when an ‌iPhone‌ is charging and positioned in landscape. Here's everything you need to know to get started using Standby Mode.

Thank you for putting this video together. I realized I was not using standby mode to its full potential. I realized I'm not a fan of receiving notifications so I've turned those off. Keep up the great work and for showing us how to use this feature properly.

Thanks Ellen. I bought an  MagSafe charging puck and an inexpensive stand/holder that it fits into for my bedside table. I’ve struggled with night stand customization, and I’ll give it another shot now.

Thank you! The green cursor is just a Bluetooth mouse connected to my iPhone.

😊👍🏾🇬🇧 you are brilliant I've picked up a couple of skills from watching you. Standby mode doesn't work on my 12 pro max very frustrating 😒 I've no idea why but I will try again keep up the excellent tips etc you do.☺️👍🏾🇬🇧

Hi Wendy it should work. Make sure you’re connected to power and in landscape mode. I set mine to 20 seconds and that seems to force it work.

Wendy-Yours should work. Standby Mode always on is only available on the 14 Pro and 15 Pro models. Since you have the 12 ProMax, be sure low power mode is turned off. Lock the iPhone, put in a horizontal position & and place on a charging stand for optimal use. Do not position on a flat desk. Good luck!

Thanks Ellen great video- quick question is there anyway to lower the brightness level of the clock? Prior to StandBy I was using a 3rd party version which would allow me to adjust the brightness level. I haven’t found that option on Apples StandBy,,,unless I missed it

Hi Ellen, I can’t make it do standby. I put the phone in dark mode, that didn’t help. I feel silly because I can’t do it 😱🤪. It’s an iPhone 13. Is that why? In ‘display’ FYI I only have one option - night mode on or off. Also I can’t swipe left or right, all that happens is that the camera comes alive. Help 🤪

Hi ic, Is the iPhone plugged in and standing on its side in landscape mode? It can also be on it side on a charging stand. Once it’s in that position Standby should automatically turn on. You don’t need to worry about Night Mode. Your iPhone 13 will definitely be able to use Standby. I hope that helps.

@@EllensTipsForiOS Ellen, Isabel again. I don’t know how but I plugged it in now, to charge, propped on its side and - standby mode activated 🤯. I did nothing different than last night. So, thank you 😊 being a senior citizen tech savvyless person is - humbling.

If I understand you correctly, Standby works when the phone is charging. I would want to use it as a bedside clock but today's chargers are really quick. Do you know how to keep the phone from going past 80% charge if it's on a magsafe charger while I'm sleeping for 8 hours? If not, does that effectively mean Standby would only be used for an hour when the battery is low and needing charging?

You are correct Standby will only work when the iPhone is charging. If you go into Settings >Battery >Battery Health and Charging > Charging Optimization you can set the phone to charge to only 80%. I’ve not done that and my battery life holds up well. I do turn on Optimized Battery charging.

I think the phone has to be connected to the charger, not necessarily charging. At least it seems to me that my phone has at 100% and standby is still working.

I'm sure many people would be interested to know that Standby mode only works on any model iPhone 15. Too bad that was not mentioned in the video.

That’s not true!! StandBy mode is available on iPhones running iOS 17-that's the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max launched in 2018, and every handset that's appeared since.
