Wow, I've had this camera for nearly a decade and was just going off of instinct, many of my photos turned out very well but many did not. I was using the DOF switch as a light meter for the longest time, thank you for showing me how to use my favorite camera!
Make sure to replace the batteries (2 x LR44 batteries). Below the camera there's 2 coin-slot screw covers, one of them holds the batteries inside. Replace them and the lightmeter should start working!
