How To Use You Amazon Echo As A PC Speaker

If you have limited desk space or a small PC or laptop with basic sound you might want to consider using your Amazon Echo as a speaker. Your Amazon device can be used as a Bluetooth speaker for you phone, but also your PC which will save on space and give the device a dual purpose.
With the flagship Echo's this can also be done by changing the audio port to input on the Alexa app. I'm using my Echo Plus in my new office setup as I don't have a set of speakers for the PC in there and this works for both this Desktop computer and my work laptop.

This works really well. I use the later 4th gen orb version and it sounds superb on wired connection. You do get slight latency though so lip sync on video isn't spot-on but it's Ok. These devices have a lot of audio DSP inside them which introduced the latency.

If its the same with both echo devices it would suggest that the issue is with the PC. If the PC is using something like Bluetooth 2.0 maybe there is a conflict with other BT devices? Just a guess though. :( also i do know that certain Alexa commands can cause her to disconnect from bluetooth, for example playing Spotify will disconnect to give priority to the streaming service.

@AndysTechLife

Not as far as I know. From what I understand, the Echo Show devices with an aux port are output only and dont support input so there's no option to change in the app.

@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 3 года назад
With some of the echo devices you can connect the aux in cable and just ask alexa to 'play'. But just FYI some of the older Echos only support audio out and not audio in, so its possible this won't work with the one you have so the only option would be Bluetooth.

@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 2 года назад
You can try asking alexa to connect to Bluetooth first and try it this way. Seems to be a recurring issue for several people, and sometimes updating Bluetooth drivers in windows solves the issue. If not seems like the quickest fix is to reset the speaker, but check out some of the other comments in case anyone else found a different fix.

My mini pc only has a headphone socket. When I connect this socket to the echo with a 3.5 cable, it works ok, but when the pc is off I get a humming from the speaker. The Jack on the cable doesn’t go fully into the pc socket and this seems to be the cause of the hum - is there a way of fixing this?
@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife Год назад
That's very strange as the 3.5 jacks should all be the same and standard, so if it's not fitting fully, I'd suggest carefully checking if there's any dust or dirt blocking it from going in completely. The buzzing is caused by improper contact between the contacts on the jack and the cable, so this won't be fixed until you get the cable to go in correctly. :( Hope you get it sorted!

Do you think its possible to get 2 Echos and set them up as stereo to use for PC audio?
@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 2 года назад
In theory yes, but I haven't been able to get windows to do this so it may not be possible. Each echo is a separate device with a separate Bluetooth connection so the PC would need to broadcast to both (multipoint) and Windows only let's you output to one device at a time. If you can convince your computer to output to multiple devices at the same, but by default Windows will only let you use one sound device at a time.

@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 3 года назад
The speakers I think are better sound from the Echos but in truth the recognition is probably better from the Google speakers but this depends on what you're doing. Amazon has marginally better integrations with smart devices simply since they've been around later. Even with the difference in recognition I'm sticking with Amazon though as there's a bigger range of devices and a little more flexibility. In terms of settings you can goto alexa.amazon.co.uk (or .com) and this web page will let you control all your settings.

It only works on the larger echo's. If you're using an echo dot, even though there's an audio jack on the device this only works for audio out and not in. The bigger flagship echo's will let you switch between audio in and out and have the aux option, but not the smaller ones :(

@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 11 месяцев назад
Best thing to check is that the default windows sound output device is the Echo and no other device. You might need to check if it's detected as a sound device at all in the control panel -> sound or device settings. If that doesn't work the only other things that seem to work are updating windows BT drivers and if that fails you can try resetting the Echo. Not ideal but it seems to work for a lot of people.

Just to note it only works on the flagship echos and not on the Echo dots. So if you're trying with a dot it won't work as they only support audio out. The newer, bigger echos support out and in.

Best thing is to check under the bluetooth settings that it says 'connected for audio' then right click on the volume mixer on the bottom right and go into sound settings. You should be able to troubleshoot the device there. Theres also an advanced option in this settings menu that might help. Its possible you have another piece of software that's managing your audio devices for example Realtek audio or similar. In that case try and see if you can change the output device in that application instead. Hope you get it sorted!

Love it. Two birds one stone ! Can anything be done (Microphone or hub wise) with the Echo Input disk ? This is no longer supported by Amazon on their set-up web page and I hate chucking perfectly serviceable stuff away. The Echo input had previously been used for Alexa voice input to an Andoid tablet, but now, as its been effectively disgarded by Amazon, I've configured an old Easy Acc speaker/microphone to take its place and act for Alexa functions as well as an microphone/speaker for the tablet (Works well no-switching required) Other than re-using the Echo input as a drinks coaster, the only other useful possible use is as a microphone/hub for my desktop PC. So currently, with the only other microphone device on the system, a Microsoft USB video camera, disconnected, I've got the Echo Input hard-wired to a USB hub connected to my Windows 11 desktop as well as connected by Bluetooth to the same hub via a USB Bluetooth dongle. Whilst Windows Device Manager recognises it as a Media Protocol Device and W11 Bluetooth Settings Menu shows the Echo Input 2D4 as paired with a bluetooth dongle, it doesn't show as a sound recording device in the W11 Control Panel Sounds Menu . . . . so no voice accepted. What gives ?

I just got a 4th gen Echo dot but I can't find any 'general' in the settings. I guess they changed the menu since you made this video and I can't find the place for the setting to use it as a wired speaker.
@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 2 года назад
The dots only support audio out. There's no option to change to audio in so there's no menu option. Audio in is only on the larger echo devices unfortunately. You can use an audio cable to use another speaker with the dot but not to have sound from the PC come out of the dot itself.

Unfortunately the voice commands override the connection to the PC, so if i say next track it doesn't change whats playing from the PC it will go to the next track on whatever music service is setup on your Alexa app, eh Spotify or Amazon Music. The Bluetooth connection is limited that way it seems.

Also check when the device is connected in Windows settings if the Echo is selected as the default output device or if it shows in the dropdown at all. So I went ahead and connected my Echo Show to my Chromebox via Bluetooth. Now Alexa wants to tell me all about where I am playing from, be it from RU-vid, a video newsclip from the local newspaper or an announcement of new email by a Chrome Extension. Any tips to put a muzzle on Alexa?
@AndysTechLife
@AndysTechLife 3 года назад
Weird, she doesn't go into that much detail for me, but chrome might be sending additional info. You could asking her to turn on brief mode, or you could see if there's any settings in chrome that wouldn't send the tab / app details, but I'm not sure this would work.

Check if the echo is the default output device in windows first then in the system sound settings in windows look for Advanced sound settings. There you will see a list of programs and you can choose the output device for each program. Chrome will be shown on this list only if it is playing some sound.

On the newer echos on the app it shows under General->Aux Audio under the device. For the older ones like the echo plus and last gen they seem to have taken it out of the menu, but when I plug in the aux cable to my Echo Plus it seems to automatically detect. Once now I've had to turn off then on with the aux cable attached. Hope this helps.

I read somewhere that once you plug the line into the Echo Plus to use it as a speaker, the mic is automatically disabled and you can't give Alexa commands until you unplug the 3.5mm cable. Is this true? I want to get one to use as a computer speaker as well but i also want to give Alexa commands without having to unplug the cord .
