Why would you put flashing over the shingles? I know you put the waterproof membrane below, but it seems like the space between the membrane and the flashing could give you mold growth.
I recommend:A) to use a flash metal as the roof color and you don't have to paint,B)use screws for deck better work than nails,C)silicone before installing 2by4,.
I would recommend: A) Use proper formatting when critiquing something you know nothing about. B) The color of the roof flashing is superficial, more concerning is the improper lapping they did from top of 2x4 to sheeting.
Please help! We have a skylight in our manufactured home. Back in 2007 we had metal roofing put on and they lifted our skylight 4 inches with 4" boards. The boards were able to be seen from the inside of the bathroom, so to satisfy me the bent a piece of metal to fit around the opening to cover the boards. Every summer, when it gets extremely hot tar melts down into our skylight on top of the metal sheet they covered the boards with. How do I fix this problem?
Eric I am disappointed to see this type of work. I have watched your videos on the past and they are good, but watching how you used more that one course of shingles per tin shingle that is not right and you know it buddy that you most, no excuse use one tin shingle per course of shingles no exceptions, and on top of that you paint your metals after you install them and you did not protected the shingles from your spry pain those are some of the most expensive shingles on the market. I would not enjoy getting on my roof to look at the Ski light and find spry paint on my expensive roof, don't let your guard down man I am a roofer my self and I like your videos a lot, good luck and keep up the good work
Can you mount a fixed mount skylight in either direction? Or is there a specific top and bottom? Since neither side opens, is there a correction orientation?
Stupid question as the skylight installed clearly showed it not only opened and closed in a sliding manner, but also had a screen attachment as well. Like everything else in life, this product would have come with installation instructions clearly stating the correct orientation of the skylight.
You don't have to use step flashing, not necessarily, but this video has step flashing. I'm not really convinced about the quality on the bottom and top flashing on this video, it looks pretty crappie
The back pan is incorrect, not even close to correct. Spray painting on a roof is risky business. Use flashing for over spray. I guarantee you that the skylight will leak. The top two corners. Just copy the old technique. Should not be flush to curb. Place another back pan and redo correctly. This is not correct and slopy.
Hahaha , right ? These guys are hacks. And I’m not saying that bc they are Spanish speaking brown people , no. I’m saying it bc I know how to install a curb-mounted skylight , have installed several in my life ,,, and this is SO full of f**k-ups , it’s criminal. I give it 2 maybe 3 good precip events and the nightmare will begin. Even if this was installed in the southwest , when it rains there , it tends to really pour. But , you know , when you do work like this , just change your phone number - often.
@@lisacolbert5987 I knew a fella who bought a bunch of car magnets all the same size, including numbers. Had them cut up so he could swap the name and logo constantly and had multiple magnets of every number all in the same font. He could literally swap his work trucks identity driving home to home. The good news was they eventually caught up with him for fraud (no license, took money and left multiple times, I think tax evasion was even in there). They got him for 5 years in prison, I think it was 3 year ban on his license, and a fine worth less than he took.
In the beginning of the video at 00:40, weren't ypu scared that you would end up cutting the rafters? How did you make sure that the saw cut just the top of the roof?
Also, since they shot screws upward from the attic. The markings should've guided them not to go over the rafters. I did all cuts in one pass (ie. cutting both plywood and purlins at once).
Apparently, you didn't see the video all the way to the end. The ceiling is open from below. They were able to predetermine the location. Think about it: how was it that they could cut and they were dead on between two rafters. 😊
I'm replacing my curb mounted bubble skylight because it has developed cracks. When I went up to measure I was surprised to find out the skylight is not attached to the curb. It is, literally, sitting on top of the curb with no screws to hold it on. I was able to lift it right off to measure the curb. That seems weird to me because even if the high winds out here haven't lifted it off it still seems like a security issue. Anybody could lift it up and drop right down into my bathroom! The skylight is at least 25 years old, maybe older. I had a new metal roof put on in 2012. I don't know if the skylight was always just sitting up there like that or whether the guy that did my roof didn't bother to reattach after finishing the roof. After searching high and low on line I was finally able to order a new Velux bubble skylight. It hasn't shipped yet but I'm trying to prepare ahead of time for installing it. I have a metal roof and there is metal flashing installed up the sides of the curb. Do I need to put anything between the skylight and the flashing? Was that stuff you were spraying some kind of water proofer or was it just paint? Your video didn't show the actual attaching of the skylight to the curb. I won't know until the skylight gets here whether it has screw holes for attaching to the curb. I'm hoping it does. Thanks for taking time to read my long question! Eva
if you have a gap between the skylight and the frame where it's mounted , usually the skylight seals any mosquitos or bees penetration when you mount it on the curb. at any hardware store they sell a thing that is called weather seal or tape and you stick it around the frame before mounting the skylight. to secure the skylight you can use 2 inch galvanized nails or metal screws , 2 nails or screws on the longer side and 1 on the short side should keep it in place. usually the skylights are design to divert the wind that's why you went so many years without nails. hope my answers could solve your questions , good luck. Eric.
i was just painting the galvanized flashing to match the color of the roof, when they replaced your roof , they forgot to re attach the skylight in place , in order for them to install the flashing under the skylight , the had to remove it and forgot to install the screws back. thanks for you comment . Eric.
I would opt fpr my cut to break beyond an overlap, or little shingle flap. Just cause anything that runs down and then around the skylight will now be forced under that one flap on top, sure there's flashing gonna be around it but i still think like that no matter what.
Improper installation: the head flashing was not overlapped correctly with underlayment in shingle manner. The side step flashing was not woven between shingles. If it did not leak as "you claim", you've got VERY lucky. There are other variables that determine leakage when such poor installation is performed such as climate zone, roof's pitch, wind driven rain, etc...
Using a skill saw as a handsaw, a crosscut saw and a multi tool, ... and you still need to have an assistant grab the end of a 16-21 inch cutoff? Wtf? Nice creases on the flashing. I’m sure that skylight sat beautifully. Tape or at least cardboard the next time before you graffiti the shingles, huh?
Primo tu a mi no me duermes, quitaste chingos y cuando cortaste todo estaba en escuadra ; quiero ver como lo hiciste.. Si eres bieno me vas a enseñar..
+Roofing Solutions By Eric Garcia depends upon the city's building code it varies in different counties...any standing water will eventually cause damage but I do like your prep and application.
+Jim Welch , So far I haven't seen any cricket on the top side of the skylights,I live in CA , but I usually use a Peel &Stick Membrane around the skylight before installing the step flashing.
Exactly, one cut would have done it. Cut the osb once around the outside scored perimeter of skylite frame and you would have been golden. Not the inside of the frame...perhaps, this is why they aren't carpenters...yeah, stick to roofing, dude. Seriously.
That would put the skylight too low for many counter flashings and increase chance of leaks. Size up to a 2x6 to compensate and you get increased lever forces and warpage affecting your curb. Keyboard warriors, always nitpicking. Are you a carpenter? Maybe you should try roofing.
David fromm you are right... Everything except how install skylight... By the way it was an ugly flashing maybe try a metal brake it would look nice instead bend the metal with the hammer
Alex Medrano ...that skylight was done about 3 years ago. Till now it hasn't leaked yet. The problem with roofs is this: people want to see cosmetic roofs. Remember roofs are not for cosmetic view the only purpose of a roof is to last at least 30 years . leak free. I was trying to show a simple way to do it with simple materials. Many people don't get the main idea yet. 😢 sad
Your approach is well, the first mistake is your wooden box it should have at least 6 inches in height because of the storms with lots of waterFor the rest your technique is good!
Gee thanks for response to a question not even asked. Here is a question for you: Do you know where this build took place and further to that point do you know what the local building codes, and weather patterns are? Here is another question for you: Were you born a mentally handicapped floor licker? Or is this just an acquired skill of your?
@@baiebell1 Imagine being so mentally stunned you think you are able to determine a strangers emotion based on a single paragraph you read on You Tube, you are a cancer sir.

Everybody asking about skylight installation ...the guy build the fucking frame and flashing ...you just gonna drop the skylight on it and attach with screws 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Let me tell you...till this date ...the skylight hasn't leaked yet...when i did the roof i gave the home owner 10 yrs labor warranty on the shingles installation...short after he decided to open up the skylight...so i went back and installed the new skylight...i don't think it will leak... I skipped many steps on the video to make it short and swift...but it's waterproof my friend. I was done by Eric Garcia...not a fly by night roofer
This is sloppy work. 1. Curb should have been 2x6. 2. Top and bottom 2x6 should go over rafters. 3. Should have diverters on back pan, and on step flashing at the bottom. 4. missing counter flashing. 5. step flashing done incorrectly. 6. they make colored flashing.....
