Easy DIY how to: draining and refilling oil and changing oil filter on a Volkswagen/Audi 1.4 TSI engine. The car featured is a 2011 Golf but the process applies generally.
You will need:
* Jack & axle stands, ramps, or some other safe way of getting under the car. Do not use the vehicle's spare wheel jack.
* Oil, fully synthetic 5w30 of minimum standard A3/B4 or VW 502. Amazon links:
US: amzn.to/2jqapnL | UK: amzn.to/2ijnxOy
* Replacement filter of the correct type and size. The easiest way to find the right size is to quote the vehicle to the merchant. The Mahle filter featured is # OC 593/4. Amazon links:
US: amzn.to/2impN2G | UK: amzn.to/2imyPwu
* 19 mm or 3/4" hex socket with bar and/or ratchet.
* Oil filter wrench of some kind, try Amazon US: amzn.to/2YJPQK0 | UK: amzn.to/2xIOnbB
* Rags.
* Oil tray to drain old oil.
* Container in which to dispose of old oil.
* Funnel.
* Ideally: torque wrench for tightening drain plug (30 Nm).

Hello and thank you for the great video it really helped us with the oil change. My girlfriend and I went to a "self garage" to do the procedure and we got a couple of tips from the mechanics working there. When you fill the engine with oil you should pour around 3 liters and then start the engine for 1 minute. This will make the oil circulate and fill the filter and all the regions in the engine. After one minute you shut down the engine and you measure again with the dip stick and add oil as needed. Once again thank you for the effort. Greetings from Bulgaria

Very nice how to video. A couple of things: Use the correct size socket. Close is not good enough. If you check the oil with the front of the car lifted you won't get an accurate dipstick reading. The stick is at the front of the engine & with the car lifted it will read lower than when the car is on the ground. Cheers.

It's so good to see someone respecting the certifications of the manufacturer (VW 502 or 504/507), I saw tons of oil change videos on RU-vid and people don't seem to care about specifications, they only talk about viscosity ! (It's fine to care about viscosity of course, but if you have the right viscosity and the wrong specification, the engine will be damaged)

Great video, should work for most recent 1.4 tsi Volkswagens. I do mine every 10.000km (6.200m) mainly because its an easy job. Oil on turbo cars seems to turn black a little faster. Those filters seem to get stuck on there either way. I just hand tighten but they still seem to lock up every time.

Nicely done video. Thanks!!! How can you be lazy if you've made the effort to do the video? 🙂 I've just done the oil change of my 2011 VW TSI twincharger for the first time. It is actually better to use Edge 5W30 (VW 502 spec) and do frequent oil changes than use Edge LL (VW 504 spec) and do infrequent changes. Oil plays a major part in this engine.
@ErikTheVikingMechanic
@ErikTheVikingMechanic 7 лет назад
OK few things, 1,you should worm up the engine /oil before draining ,2 add some oil also into new oil filter 3, after the change let it run, let it cool and top up if needed.
@DamianSix66
@DamianSix66 5 лет назад
Is that possible (to add oil to filter) as it is an upside down filter? I've used this video about 6 times now and change religiously every 6000 miles (taxi driver). The filter is the drain back type I believe, should I push down then pour some oil in?
@tomhummel2641

@@DamianSix66 No, this filter upside/is not necessary to fill. All small filters in modern engines will be filled very quickly, so there's no need to fill them.

The thing not to miss is that castrol edge 5W30 is 60-100% organic/mineral, according to the manufacturer's MSDS. One of the worst choices if you aim at anything synthetic.

straight to the point and worth giving time to these kind of videos.thanks
@philpope9297
@philpope9297 8 месяцев назад
we were sold the wrong filter without the spring loaded mechanism. Because the old filter was destroyed during removal we had no option but to fit the wrong one and drive it a few miles to get the right part. Car oil light came on a few times. Will we have done any damage? We also seem to have had to put in much more than 3.6L to get to the hashed level on dipstick - we did wait a long time for it to settle and checked it again after idling for a few minutes.
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 8 месяцев назад
The spring mechanism is just anti-drain-back I believe. When full of oil it holds that oil, and during filter removal it allows it to drain so you don't get a mess. But on the first start-up on a 'dry' filter it should make no difference, the oil flow will take a second to fill the empty filter up. However oil light a concern regardless. Did the car make error chime (sound), with red oil can icon? You will have to check the car for DCT codes and see where that leads. Ongoing oil pressure issues you will have to check with a proper gauge, and diagnose. If engine running ok and sounds normal, and no more errors, I suppose nothing to do but trust it's ok.
@philpope9297
@philpope9297 8 месяцев назад
yeah it was making the chime noise. We thought it was just detecting that it had the wrong filter and if we drove slowly would be okay as we were sure we had put enough oil in and it wasn't leaking. Changed for the filter for correct one and it seemed fine. Drove it round a bit and then took it to high revs and it came up with some errors saying it had misfired on a couple fo the cylinders. Cleared the codes and drove a few more miles and seemed fine. Might be running a bit rough or I might be imagining it. Probably needs spark plugs changed to might do that next. @@CraigsDIY

What can happen if I use 5w40 oil but it is not 504 00 it is 508.88?
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 4 года назад
So far as I can see, 508.88 is some South American standard to do with poor fuel quality. I'm afraid I can't help. If you have a localized user manual for your car, see what that says, or try asking a local VW dealership. Generally a more viscous oil like 5w40 vs 5w30 will give you a little worse fuel economy but it might be a price worth paying if they are specifying it for a good reason.

@CraigsDIY

Certainly not, so long as no issues, and you shouldn't at those miles. These engines do stretch their chains but you should have to worry about that for a long time, and hopefully never if you don't thrash it.
@eponymous7910
@eponymous7910 9 месяцев назад
3 years is waaaaaay too long to wait between services. Old oil will eventually cause timing chain issues as the tensioner relies on oil pressure. Even doing next to no kms you should really drop the oil annually

@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 5 лет назад
If it's just like this one, it has a timing chain, not a belt, and so should be fine for the lifetime of the engine (absent any symptoms). Newer engines have cam belts which you'd probably want to look at sooner. I believe the accessory belt has a service interval of 90K, but you can probably get away with a lot longer - however do inspect it visually. Here is a recent vid on changing the accessory belt on my Ford (@ about 9 mins), it might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ItND7vPozv8.html

We bought an English-language manual from the UK, off eBay - have a look, not too expensive, many sellers will ship internationally. You can also get an electronic one on the VW website, but it's not easy to download it as a contained PDF so buying a hardcopy is the best bet.

@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 6 лет назад
You mean TSI, the DSG is the gearbox. But I have heard that TSI's do use oil from new. Apparently VW try to claim a liter per 1000 km is 'normal' - hardly! This car is at 40,000 km and we had to top up a liter or so in the period between the oil change change shown and the next. Presumably your car is under warranty, so if you have the discussion with the dealer you could try to get a firm number for specified oil consumption tolerance in writing, then get them to test the car by logging the oil level over an agreed distance. I suggest you will have to get them involved like so to avoid giving them excuses. If you search Google "tsi oil use" you'll find many forum discussions about it.

Hey, do you guys recommend using Mobil 1 Oil?
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 6 лет назад
Use whatever reputable brand you like so long as it meets the VW standard. Mobil 1 is fine (but usually pricey).

and disagree here, you want to have as much oil as possible, especially in TSI, this engines loves to burn oil. You might very quickly find out you have been running low for significant periods of time. Also remember that filter takes approx 200ml of oil so easy this car take 4L.
