How to Walk Softly with Dr. Todd Martin. Learn how to glide when you step, with little to no impact on your joints when you place your foot. Keep your spine perfectly aligned. Walking with no impact requires controlling three phases of each step. This detailed video will set you up very well to improve your walk. The foot placement, the lowering of the forefoot, and the swing through are the three phases this video will help you master. Learn how to use your core muscles properly, including your lower abdominals, your gluteus medius, your gluteus maxiums, and your hip flexors. These muscles need to coordinate with every step. We control each step at the level of the core. The muscles in the knees, ankles, and feet respond reflexively to the pattern of core movement.
Walking softly will help prevent back pain, hip arthritis, knee arthritis, and numerous foot problems. This will help prevent flat feet. Depending on the surface we are walking on, we can place on the heel or the ball. I will show you how to use your core properly to choose the right foot placement.

Well part of the mystery gets solved. I live in a city on the top of a very long hill. When I get out I begin to walk down a slope, as an example If I walk 500mts down when I return I walk up a slope for 500 mts. And returning is hard. So I got used to bending forward during the way up. I couldn´t apply the walking code outside so I trained my self at home but the tendence to bend and compensating it throwing my shoulders backward continued. Lately I realized that my gluteus Medius was weak in my left side (making the Trendelenburg test) so my right leg and hip were suffering the stress. Now I have been training my left side, my inferior abs, and stretching the right side. Yesterday I walked outside for an hour with no pain for the first time in two years. I thought all was caused by my scoliosis and imbalance but this video 23.05 gave me the clue that when I walk outside in a way I'm really going up and down stairs. Your videos made me think a lot an investigate and try many solutions (some went wrong others helped). So thankyou very much, without your help it couldn't have been possible. 😄👏💙

Thank you! I am a former dance and pilates instructor but am going through multiple surgeries over 2 months. My dr forbade exercise and said I can only do slow walking around the house. Concentrating on your techniques will keep me sane as I train myself to move slower. 🙏🏼

Thanks, Doc. I used to think that forceful steps would prevent osteoporosis. More force on bones more calcium deposition.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
Walking well is great for bone density. You don’t have to walk poorly. The calcium deposition that comes from striking forcefully is called bone spurs. Not good.

Older guy walking the dog, seem to have a soft walk with a shorter stride. Younger guy seem to probably have that pelvic tilt as he was overriding I think.? Does the gluteus medius also tie into the external oblique and it seems like one of my sides has been less active than the other. It’s taken me about three years to figure out which side I was weak, side-bending to, and I’m having to actually make sure to engage that side to make the overactive side track straight when I’m walking or standing .

I've always had a heavy heel strike. I imagine after all these years of walking like that and a couple of injuries along the way, some of the key muscles are in need of some strengthening, thinking gluteus medius for starters. Love seeing that soft walk. Maybe one day.

Regarding the glute medius activation: can you explain exactly when they should begin to fire/activate--and, when should they stop firing? I think that I may be holding the activation too long in order to help with my balance on the weight-bearing leg. Thank you!

Hi Doctor good afternoon here in India this is another excellent video on how to walk smoothly.My question is how do you control the core movement when we are walking in speed or say walk normally in daily routine.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
This is the normal way to walk during your daily routine. I mention speeding up in the video. You speed up the rotation of the waist and everything else follows

I think mastering this technique is the key to be able to use barefoot shoe to walk outside.👍 I wonder if is possible adapt this technique even for brief walking on motorcycle boots, since over them the movement is more limited, while the rigidity of the sole varies significantly between the various categories of motorcycle for what where thinked.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
Yes, this is definitely the way to walk barefoot or minimalist. If your boots significantly limit mobility, that could be tough, but I assume that is for limited time.

I have watched several videos and attempted to utilize what I am understanding as I am walking, however, I am afraid of walking incorrectly now. So before walking, shouldn’t I strengthen my very weak glute and abdominal muscles with other specific exercises targeting those muscles?
@ToddMartinMD

If you are having trouble and want an exercise to work the muscles, I would try my Balance and Core Mobility Routine which you can find on the channel.

That’s a tough one. You should walk the same way, but I don’t know how much they may restrict the mobility of the foot
