How to Warp Long Samples in Ableton Live 11 (Whole Tracks)

Taking advantage of Ableton Live's powerful warping features is essential when working with samples or when preparing for a DJ set or live performance.
Here's my method of warping whole tracks to Live's grid. It works every time, provided that the track has regular tempo. Otherwise you'll need to adjust the parts where it starts to drift manually.
Let me know if it works for you!

I recommend Serato Sample. Its a great Sampler and it tells you the key and BPM of the samples. Its frequently on sale. I think its a must have if you dont own any hardware like a Maschine or MPC

I know Serato Sample is good but I feel it's slightly redundant here. The built-in tools in Live are excellent for sampling, actually better than Maschine or MPC. They do it all, except for telling you the key but you can use a free app for this or learn to find it by ear.

Because it's not very likely that it was the correct tempo to begin with. Tapping the tempo gives you the ballpark bpm but when making music with a sequencer, people mostly use round numbers. With live music it's different of course.

Good video! I just work with a vocal track, and then the transients are not nicely on the beat, so that requires some extra techniques/skills. I guess like fixed grid off. Also weird: Ableton keeps guessing the track is 120 where it is clearly 110. But I understood this is a hard topic. Got it right, but now I have to find out how i did it ;-)

Low Heat Beats. I loved it. What I don't understand about Donna Washington track - I understand it takes serious times to keep putting in warp markers and screws up the groove as you add a shedload of warp markers. When you put it in Simpler, was that that remainder of the track or just bars 5-9? What if you need to warp the whole track is the Simpler some kind of solution or were you saying "I've warped as much of this as I need?" And the bit in Simpler was simply to chop? I'll watch your chopping video with pleasure. As you know, if you have a good timing, manually finding great beats or whole sections in Arrangement view is a joy- fun and easy. It's incredibly over-looked considering it's been there forever.

Hi bro! Thank you for this knowledge.. I have a quick question: Why not also use "Warp from here straight? to make sure it aligns all of the transients for sure. Is SET 1.1. here always enough to align everything, or do you find yourself using both? Thank You!

Yes, if the tempo of the track doesn't change, set 1.1.1 here is sufficient, it has always worked for me. But obviously you can try the other option if the bpm fluctuates and you're having trouble aligning it to the grid.

Hi, Thanks for your video! I have a BPM alignment problem with my 70s / 80s discomusic files. They were played by real musicians and therefore their BPM is not as perfect as a metronome. (Drifting tempo). Also if I want to add a drum loop for the whole project, the warp will fail sooner or later ... I waste a lot of time to warp the whole song :-( Any advice? The advice is towards the end of the video - you need to create warp markers to warp different regions to correct the drifting tempo. I'm afraid there's no way around it.

@@LowHeatBeats The problem is that in my files, the BPM vary very frequently and it can happen that after 1-2-3-4 measures one or more beats are already out of sync ... Much also depends on both the source and how they were sampled. .. a losing fight if I want the whole song with constant bpm. I can't even wear yellow clothespins as I call them only in drum breaks, because the rest would be out of time anyway ... Grrrrrr

This method makes the Position that you chose jump to 1.1 in the arrangement. I dont want my track to start in the middle of the song. How can I do this without changing the Start position of the track?

Just drag the start of the clip on the arranegement view to the left to uncover the part of the track that's before 1.1.1. You may need to move the clip to the right before doing that.

Definitely. You don’t have the drums to make it easy to align to the grid and many acapellas don’t start on the first beat of the instrumental, which also makes it harder.

Depends if there’s another rhythmic element that can help you establish the tempo. But it’s more difficult if you have no drums or any other rhythms.

I was making a long (audio)mix in Ableton but the first track (intro) i couldn't get tight (there is no kick, beat, hiat or melody) when i shifting the first 1.1.1 marker in the arrangement view, everything will be shifting :-/ (wave-file) but now is resolved (Pin the kick marker and then drag the first marker to a right grid) :)) Thanks!

DJ software may make it easier to find the BPM but won't align it with Live's grid, so you may still need to do it manually.

Really hate that Ableton shifts audio when trying to set tempo. As an engineer trying to move into Ableton from Pro Tools this is frustrating. When mixing a clients project I import all the stems for the project then name/ arrange them all. Then I find the tempo and set Pro Tools grid accordingly. Now all of my effects (delays/stutters) are in time. But Ableton SHIFTS THE SONG. Shit is mad annoying. Wish there was a quick bypass for this.

But that's exactly the point of the video. Did you actually watch it? I've explained how to set your warping settings in the beginning, depending on whether you want long stems to be auto warped or not.
