When I was a kid and starting out my mom ironed my gi and my sensei realized he needed to instruct the beginners how to properly wash and maintain a gi. He did a bunch of classes on proper gi maintenance for anyone who needed to learn and from that day kept teaching the beginners how to wash and maintain the gi.
I just got my Seishin Gi here in New Mexico last week. This Gi fits so well and it so comfortable that it has further enhanced my enjoyment of Karate. I am 6'1" 275 lbs. (124 Kilos) weightlifter who has big arms, legs, shoulders and a bit of a belly and the Seishin Male 185 cm / 6 ft 1 in size fits me perfectly. I will follow these instructions for the Gi's care, thanks!
I remember my first thick/heavy weight gi. It felt like a boat sail when wet. And yes I made the ironing mistake.......took almost a month of washes for the singe marks to come out. Air dry and after a good warm up it looks great. I am not obsessed with looks but as an instructor we always need to give a professional image.
Love the drying cabinet - I've never seen one before. I have a couple of very cheap "toothpick" bo that developed cracks (they'd only been struck a few times each, and not very hard either). The bo now have a new life as drying racks - I hang them with twine from ceiling hooks. I thread one bo through the sleeves of my gi jacket. The other bo is for pants, my obi, and, *ahem* things I wear under my dogi. For the pants I use two pants hangers (one front, one back) to hold it open to allow air flow. Love your "Crazy Monkey" technique - I'll try that.
Excellent video bro. Now, i know that I washed the Gi in a bad form. So, thank you so much for the video. I will follow your advices. Greetings from Panamá.
My goodness.. I have been 60 degree (with softener) washing my Gis for years! I’ve been doing it all wrong!! Thank you Sensie for contributing to teach me things I didn’t know :-)
@@austinwiebe2648 thank you Austin. You already have launderer biological. Off only use with white clothes like kimono. I don’t now if you ´re kimono can be white again. I hope yes. I already have a good result with biological laundry. Good luck
THANK YOUUUUU! last time when you replied to my message "how do you keep your karate gi not wrinkly without an iron?" and you said "you have to wash it properly, but thank you so much for making a video to elaborate on that! Thanks so so much! i really appreciate it :))
Thanks for good tutorial :) i made nearly all mistakes i washed my Gi in 30°(doesnt have lower) but i think i used sometimes bleach and at winter my gi wasnt dry for next training(2 times in week 2 days break only tuesday & thursday) maybe thats why i feel like my gi is smaller then before and when i had yellow belt(9 kyu) i washed my gi with my yelliw belt 😅😅 Keep on good work :)
So he is right about the bleach and the hang to dry, air dry is best. But as a fibre artist with a textile degree I must disagree about the heat. Cotton is one if the fibers that can take a hot wash and handle being ironed. I only iron for tournaments though. I wash in hot with any detergent and borax for a whitener and odour removal. oxy stain removers work well on most organic stains like sweat and blood. Dish soap or bar laundry soaps help with stubborn make-up stains. If you choose to iron use a hot setting and steam or spray the garment with water. Keep moving! Iron it, don't press it. Lastly I like to starch my gi before tournaments. if you do this, iron it before you starch it then reduce the heat so you don't scorch the starch. It will leave your gi wrinkle free and smelling great for an extended time and also make it look whiter. If it isn't stained or smelling bad don't wash it unnecessarily. it will only wear it out faster! I'm not very sweaty but I only wash mine every few weeks. Others may have to wash more often but unneeded washing is harder on the fiber than heat is. Happy washing!
It can actually be a problem sometimes. Last night I did 20 min of High Intensity in the hot gym and I was just damp, it was hard to stay cool. I know other people who aren't very sweaty either and also people like my husband who pour sweat just thinking about exercise. Everyone is different!
Thanks for the video, we've had to get new gis recently as our old ones were looking dingy. I now only use clear liquid detergents - no bluing/whitening agents - as those are what makes the gi turn grey. I do a small amount of bleach as we're in a humid climate and bacteria grows in the machine making the clothes stink. We've also stopped using regular deodorants when training and only use aluminium free deodorants; that stops yellow armpit stains from forming...that's our hope anyway.
Pssst - don't tell anyone... I don't use deodorant. My jackets get yellow armpit stains anyway. I've found spraying problem areas with white vinegar before washing helps - it'll take a couple of months to eliminate a light stain, but vinegar does that too. I also hang my jacket in a window (but take the jacket down as soon as it is dry).
@@JoelleWhiteKarateMama Does vinegar actually work? I read it just helps eliminate odor. My Gi is very off-white and yellow and its only been 8 months. Its just a cheap Blitz 65% polyester 7oz.
@@daniel-j-harris Not sure how to get the whole gi white, I just spray problem spots. If you do this from the start the gi will be OK. If it's already yellow in the problem spots it takes time and repetition (something you're already familiar with). When you can, let the vinegar soak awhile. Also, I thread a cheap bo through the sleeves to hang it to dry in sunlight. I learned a long time ago with cloth baby diapers that sunshine can whiten cotton. Hope this helps!
I mainly use the Seichin karate gi and I prefer to iron them. Only drying doesn’t help to get it straight without wrinkles. And it feels much better when it has been ironed. I think it’s less work than folding it on a table. 😊😊😊
Thanks Jesse. Been doing all of this though but notice the Gi still tends to deteriorate pretty fast unfortunately. It's the perfect gi training wise, but longevity seems to be minimal.
Hey, Im just really curious on knowing where you are from. Great video! Taught me not to iron my gi XD good thing i have a new gi so i wornt make the same mistake.
Question, one day i was jogging home from training, i fell on the wooden edge of a sandbox leaving a thin line of dirt on my pants. I hope i dont need to explain what that looks like and why i feel reluctant to go to training wearing that. I dont wanna buy another expensive Gi so im asking here to remove a very persistent stain that didnt go away in the washing machine. Appreciate replies as soon as possible as next training is in 3 days as of writing this comment.
Question how do u keep your hi so white I wash my after training when I get home and it still has sweat stains and I got a really nice new gi and don’t wanna have sweat stains. Ruining it ,any suggestions?
@@KARATEbyJesse I saw the gi! Looks great Jesse, but I have a question. I last measured my height I was 5'4 and 3 quarters, should I go for the 5'3 gi or the 5'5 gi?
Of course, one common problem is the oversized gi, and then people start trying to shrink the gi in the washer and dryer. I have that problem now. Even when I buy one size smaller than my height, they still always seem to be huge.
Pretty rare in the US from what I understand. Euro appliances are quite a bit different to US ones anyway, and drying cabinets aren't even that common in a lot of parts of Europe.
Ok chill, I don't have a dryer I just put it on the hanger outside, so it can get tanned lol, tbh, I guess making it sit on the sun is good, what do you think brother Jesse?
I got a quick question for anyone who might know... I have a ironman 100% cotton gi top and pants and it has some sweat stains would anyone know how to get those stains out with out any form of bleach
I‘ve Never bevor seen someone getting wrinkles out like this 😆 awesome! Got to try the crazy monkey 🐒 method.👍 Do you also have a video about the care for boxing 🥊 gloves? Do you wear sth. under the gloves to prevent the sweat getting in them?
"Strive to wash your gi after every training session." Doubly true for grappling arts in a gi - rolling with *that* guy who doesn't keep his gi clean is less than pleasant.
Seriously? Is he really showing others how to wash an uniforms. I can't believe I'm actually watching this. I clearly have nothing to do with my time...
I use only the biological laundry. And a product ( biological) for limestone with lemon. And off course 30 degrees . Drying natural outside no Sun shinning under the tree in my garden 😉. My Seishin Gi love that . 🥋🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
