Hi All! I wanted to show you a tutorial on how to wash your silk scarves at home. It's really quick and easy and also includes a trick to drying it instantly.
In this video I am using my hand illustrated Flamingo silk scarf in the orange and purple colour way. This is great styled as a shawl or worn as a scarf.

I would not recommend anyone to use any detergent. For silk the detergent must not contain enzymes, for which reason I would recommend a detergent specifically meant for silk. You should also watch out for different temperatures of the water you use for washing and rinsing.

Since my silk scarf is already ruined from hair sprays and hair gels I'm not worried about damage. However, when I get a new silk scarf I'm not sure about cleaning it like this. The sheen from the silk will run . I love RU-vid because you can find any type of video . I enjoyed watching.

Lovely setting & all, but this goes against several things I've learned, such as washing vintage silk (maybe any richly saturated silk) separately/ooat. Also, detergent is too harsh - I was taught to use baby shampoo/something very gentle/mild. The issue gets exacerbated if you also have to remove a musty, 'old lady' or mothball scent.

Also watch out for boyfriends trying to do the laundry, he is close to having killed all my silk items until I learned to hide them until they are back in my closet ;o)

You never leave a silk fabric in water with detergent. There will be color runs.

I use Champion powder soap, mix with water then soak my Louis Vuitton scarf for about 5 minutes . then use old toothbrush to clean the fabric. Do not crumple. Hang dry not directly under the son to avoid fading

I just use water and my finest silk scarve has lasted over 20 years. Since I have sensitive skin using just water is best for me! Looking at my 100% silk scarves, after this video I realize I made a care mistake. One of them has a big hole. What I think happened is it got some food on it and that created a hole over time. Make note when you silk gets soiled and you’ll enjoy it for years to come!

I just bought a bunch of really pretty vintage scarves from a thrift store. Do you think I should wash them all separately? Most of them are in the same color scheme but some of them are different/darker and I don’t want them to ‘bleed’ colors onto the lighter colors. Thanks for the video!

Hi Tori Smith, are they silk scarves? Sounds lovely! I would advise to wash the similar colours together and the darker one separately.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use Woolite. I ruined a gorgeous silk scarf using Woolite. Someone told me later that Woolite has bleach in it.

@Victoria what did you end up doing? They sound like they may be nice scarves you care about. Honestly I still take my silk to the dry cleaners. I've ruined silk in the past trying to launder at home.

You do not appear to address a silk scarf's rolled edges?

@2:46. It doesn't take a silk scarf "hours" to dry. I think you meant to say minutes.

Dry or STEAM iron?

Blossom Blossom steam iron works great

No steam, if it is silk. Cover scarf with already pressed white cotton pillowcase or other similar white material. NEVER touch the iron directly to the scarf material. You can spritz the scarf lightly with water, if you think it needs it, before you iron. Be sure and cover it back up with the pillowcase material and press the iron down, lifting it from spot to spot----do not slide the iron----it may stretch the silk fabric.

I don't understand... 🙄😑 Forgive my rant, but If everyone in the comments are all knowing silk experts, why in the world are they on a beginner video of "How to clean a silk scarf?" If you already knew the techniques, why are you even here? You searched the knowledge because you don't know. It's just frustrating to actual beginners (like me) who are trying to learn. The People of The Internet, yikes. 😑😣😒
