In this video, I walk through the steps of wiring a 240v outlet for use with a Craftsman 4.5 HP air compressor. The motor on this compressor draws 16 amps. For this job I used 12-2 wire (12 gauge), a NEMA 6-20 outlet, and a 20 amp 2 pole breaker. Please use caution any time you're working with electricity. Consult the manual for specifications on current draw and distance. Some devices will require a heaver breaker and possibly heavier gauge wire.

One tip that you might want to go back and redo, when wiring the circuit to the breaker, and really to any electrical component, put the wire in on the left side of the screw so that when you tighten the screw it will pull the wire in and ensure better contact.
@AndTheCorrectAnswerIs
@AndTheCorrectAnswerIs 6 лет назад
The white wire should have been wrapped (in the box and at the receptacle) with red tape since it is now being used as a hot leg and not a neutral. I see from the comments that some people think this is a neutral wire. You NEVER screw a neutral wire to a circuit breaker...only to a neutral bus bar. In the US a 240v circuit contains 2 hot (120v) legs (usually a black and a red wire), and a ground. A white neutral wire is used to complete the circuit on 120v which consists of a neutral, a hot (black), and a ground (green).

AndTheCorrectAnswerIs Great clarification. Dealing with old house. Currently I’m trying to hook up a 20a/220v window unit ac. Opened up the solid wall plate and there’s the 220v wire inside. 3 wires, black, red, white. I have the same 20a/250v plug. 2 brass screws, 1 green screw. Shot the black & red wires @124v each, white wire=0v. So, I’m wondering what to do with the white wire? Hook it to the green screw?

The white wire should have been changed to a hot wire color using a 2/1 wire. Just to be in code and not confusing to anyone else working in that box in the future. Colored shrink tubing works well. It is a good idea to use this stuff when ever using a white wire as a hot wire even in putting plugs on power equipment that come with no plug that use a wire not to code.

there are no rules about the ground hole being at the top or bottom, but most 90 degree plugs have the ground post on the cord side, so in this outlet, the cord would have to point up and then make a u turn to go down to the floor. That is why the vast majority of houses have the hole at the bottom.

That new outlet should be labelled 240V ONLY now that the "neutral" (white) is no longer neutral but the other phase of the 120V supply. If someone plugs a 120V device in, like a hand drill, it will burn up since it is now being supplied with 240V. In addition, the white conductor, now being hot, is a safety hazard and should have red tape on both ends to let the next person know it is now hot and not neutral.
@liskaerik
@liskaerik 10 лет назад
I see your point but it would be physically impossible to plug a standard 120 device into this outlet. the hot legs on a Nema 5-15 and Nema 5-20 are always in a vertical orientation. for 220/240.... the hot legs on both the Nema 6-15 and 6-20 are in a horizontal orientation making impossible to plug a 120 into a 240 volt outlet. Unless someone miswired a 120 outlet with 240 volts.

Erik Liska The socket in this video has both vertical and horizontal so a 110 appliance could be plugged in thus the end of your appliance or maybe even you.
@tomoneil4366
@tomoneil4366 9 лет назад
Vern Mitchinson I stand corrected. It looked like it had vertical openings on both sides along with the horizontal slots making some kind of combo outlet. Since it has only one vertical and two horizontal slots it is indeed a 220v outlet. No need to get your undies in a bunch. A simple clarification would have sufficed.

menom7, since you're starting with 110v outlet in the first place, it won't make a difference "tapping" those four (2 hot and 2 common) to the 220 receptacle. You will still have 110 volts coming out of it. 220 means having two hot wires and that's why you have to replace the breaker. Good luck and be careful.
@MirroringTruth
@MirroringTruth 4 года назад
Yeah...Not sure about this tutorial..Yellow wire is normally for 120 outlets, white for lights and switches....That should of been orange coated. And when you hooked to the receptacle, you have the white on the brass screw. Easy way to remember is "Black is brass, White is light (silver screw)"... I'm not an electrician, but i've worked around those trades for 35 years....I could be wrong, but I don't think I am...

I'm confused - can someone help me out? My air compressor is a 230 volt - I've wired it before to the dryer outlet through 2 lives and a ground, but now however I moved to another home. This new home, only provides you with 2 lives and a neutral. After unscrewing the breaker panel I found that both bus bars on left and right appear to be neutral. The reason I believe this to be the case is because both sides are connected by a "bridge" like metal flat piece. The second reason is because both sides have mixed white wires and mixed unsleeved copper wire (ground?). With all this said and done - I've read that IF both bus bars are neutral and no separate ground - you can use that as a ground - which means I can connect the neutral to the ground section on my air compressor. However I'm hesitant because it also says that you shouldn't mix ground and neutral. BUT that seems to be true only if you have a separate ground, which it seems to me, this house does not have a ground - which implies that the neutral acts as the ground. Finally, if I'm incorrect about the above assumptions - how do I wire the 220 air compressor? My assumption is that I can ground the air compressor to itself but there isn't any indication as to how thats done and the documentation simply demands that you seek a qualified electrician to do a job that may be a 5 minute connection that costs 150 dollars. Yes I know the implication of doing it wrong - hence why I'm doing research before I do anything without some sort of certainty. PS - I wired the dryer from a 4 wire to a 3 wire by wiring the 2 lives and neutral and simply ignoring the ground wire as it doesn't exist and wired the ground to the dryer. Works great. Can't seem to do that with the compressor.

Hi Mark,I TOO have bought a 220volt/20 amp outlet and was trying to wire it into my garage wall-outlet,but that has DUAL 120volt receptacles in it and when I tried wiring in the 220v outlet,I simply "taped-up" the other positive and negative wires that went to the 2nd 120v outlet,so when I turned on the 20amp breaker the wires go to,no power went to my 220v outlet,because the OTHER "taped" wires weren't hooked to anything to complete a circuit. My QUESTION is,would it be "safe" to simply tie the 2 positive wires together and the 2 negative wires together,that originally wired the two 120volt outlets and wire them to the ONE 220volt outlet? I'm afraid it'd start a fire from arcing!?!?

Not sure how I got here. lol You only have 5 problems with your install 1) Use a level when marking out the lines 2) Use a drywall saw for a cleaner cut 3) Get real screwdrivers. Most electrical uses #6 or #8 Robertson screwdrivers 4) After installing the wires, wrap the receptacle (especially the bolts) with electrical tape. Less likely to short out on the ground wire 5) In a utility room, consider using a stainless steel cover. Other than that. Not bad.

For anyone confused about USA 220.. You have three wires run into your house (No ground). Think of the neutral wire as the middle one. Now if you measured from the middle wire to either the left or the right (hot) wire, you would see 110v. But the left 110 is opposite of the right 110 (180 degrees, or 220 apart). So if you measure with your probes from the left wire to the right wire, the two equal 220v. It's a sign wave, one side up 110 (avg) from 0, while the other side is down 110. In a 110 plug your two wires are connected to the middle neutral, and either the right or the left 110 hot. And I think you really only need be concerned about the side (right or left) when wiring a 3 or 4 way switch. As it has been known to happen that some have actually ended up with supplying 220 to a 110 bulb because of connecting the different switches to two different sources, and ending up with a "left" hot on one switch, and a "right" hot on the other. A 3 prong plug ((not including ground) sometimes referred to as 240) uses all three of the wires from the power company. I think this is normally done for the higher amp-age needed for a stove or dryer (60 amps).
@rtel123
@rtel123 7 лет назад
the three conductor plugs are for appliances that want both 120 and 240 for various parts. For example, a clothes dryer has a 240 volt element and a 120 volt motor.

Nice work! I have the same NEMA L6-20R 20Amp 250V outlet that came with the house I am in. The outlet is wired directly to the outside service panel on a 30 AMP double pole breaker; the black is on 1 pole and the white is on the other pole. The ground is ran to the bus bar not sure if it is on the neutral or ground bus bar I would have to wait until the rain stops and have a look. When testing outlet I get 120volts not 240volts; the tester does work on 240 outlets because I tested it on dryer outlet. I have replaced the L6-20R with a new one just in case outlet was bad. Do you have any idea why this is only showing 120 on test. I tried setting a ATX PSU to the 240volt and testing the outlet that way; no power on PSU and the PSU is bridged to run without a main board connected.

fwiw, the neutral is grounded. The bare protection wire and the white in a 120 volt circuit both go to a grounded bus in the panel, and the neutral from the street is also grounded at the street. From your description, you should see 240 between the two hots, and each one should read 120 to the ground.
