This video will teach you step by step how to wire your solar panel array in a series-parallel configuration.
Wiring solar panels in series-parallel is just a matter of connecting The positive and negative wires for neighboring solar panels together creating individual series wired solar panel strings; then wiring those series wired strings in parallel by connecting the positive and negative of each series string to a MC4 Combiner to the wire that goes to the charge controller.
For the example of todays video; I am going to be wiring 4 100w rich solar panels in series-parallel; right over here.
I’ve already used my multimeter to determine which wires are positive and which wires are negative and noted that with a bit of red heat shrink on the positive wires AND covered the panels with cardboard so I’m not working with live voltage.
First, I want to wire the outside pairs together in series. That means wiring the positive to the negative on these two panels. And wiring the positive to the negative on these two panels.
Now… I have two pairs of panels wired in series. Now; I need to wire these two series wired strings in parallel.
To do that, I’m going to take all of the positives from each series wired string of solar panels; and attach them to an MC4 combiner.
Next, I’m going to take ALL of the negatives from each series wired string of solar panels; and attach them to an mc4 combiner.
Then I can attach each of the positive and negative mc4 combiners to the wires that will go through the roof and connect to the charge controller.
If the array needed to have fuses, I would attach the MC4 fuses to the positive MC4 combiner between the combiner and the panel wires. Some arrays need fuses; some don’t. You can rely on my free wiring diagrams to show you when to use them or not, but we will be covering the ‘why’ in a future video; so consider subscribing.
If you have more than four panels, the theory is completely the same. If we had 6 solar panels, they could be wired in a 3 panels in series with the 2 series strings in parallel.
OR… They could be wired 2 panels in series with the 3 series strings wired in parallel.
More panels? Same concept:
16 panels. series strings of 4 panels with the four series strings wired in parallel.
Now, something to note. All series strings really need to be identical. So; 5 solar panels cannot be wired in series parallel BECAUSE it’s highly not recommended to have an array with a series string of 2 panels wired in parallel with a series string of 3 solar panels.
Now… why would we use series parallel? Series-parallel allows us to keep the voltage from our solar panel array high enough for the MPPT charge controller to effectively do it’s job but low enough to stay under max voltage rating of the charge controller.
It also allows us to keep the solar panel array amps low enough we can effectively use smaller wire throughout the entire array without worrying about excessive voltage drop; but we are going to talk about that in MUCH more detail… next week.
I hope you found this video helpful and if you did, it’d be awesome if you’d share it with somebody or a group who you think could benefit from it and leave the video a thumbs up. Thanks for the great video. I’m currently setting up my off-road camper trailer with solar, and due to the small size I can’t fit as much as I’d like on the roof. To get what I want, I’ll have two panels bonded to the roof, and using locking drawer slides I’ll have two more covering the first Two while traveling. Once arriving at camp, the drawer slides will be unlocked and pulled out exposing all 4 panels to the sun. I’m over doing it because I’ll likely be in partial shade and they will always be flat/not directed at the sun. I’ll be using 4x Renogy 175w flexible panels. I either need to run all 4 panels in parallel or run it in series-parallel. I’d like some power from the panels while traveling and 2 panels will be completely shaded. If I choose to run it in series parallel, I’m not clear which of the two panels in your example are in parallel and which two are series. I need to know which panels should be on bottom covered and which ones should be ontop exposed for the best charging while traveling. I know it’s an odd question, but I appreciate the input. Thanks again for your videos!

Hi Nate, your videos are incredible - thank you! Question - what is the determining factor for the current of the solar-RV battery system - Is it the solar panels’ total wattage divided by the battery’s charging voltage (e.g., 14.4V for a 12V battery system)? Or the solar panels’ total wattage divide by the solar panels’ total Voc?
@EXPLORISTlife

Solar array wattage / Battery charging voltage = amps charging the battery.

Great video. I intend to have 3 panels in series permanently mounted to the roof of my camper and 3 panels in series that I can deploy on the ground. These would be wired to the charge controller in parallel. Does it hurt anything if I decide not to plug in the ground set (leave them in storage)? If I'm stopping somewhere for only 1 day, I may decide to not connect the ground set of panels. If the charge controller is sized correctly, this shouldn't be a problem, yeah?

Appreciate all of the videos you produce and usually can understand them easily :) In this video you state not recommended to mix 3 panels in series with 4 panels in series. Why? I have a situation of one panel getting shaded too much and no more space on my rig. Want to eliminate that panel from my 2 series of 800n watt run in parallel and just abandon the shaded panel in the winter when it catches the most shade. Appreciate your insight.

Hi Nate! I am trying to convert a Ford E450 Super Duty 14 passenger van into my RV. And this is my first time ever with this type of work. I cannot thank you enough for all of your information. They helped me and gave me enough courage to convert my own van. I am trying to refer to your "300AH BATTERY BANK - 3X175W SOLAR - 2000W INVERTER - ISOLATOR WIRING DIAGRAM" Then I found that you have updated this diagram to "2000W INVERTER | 200-400AH LITHIUM | 200 TO 700W SOLAR CAMPER WIRING DIAGRAM" And I have a few questions about the updated diagram. Is the updated one better or easier to install than the old version? I noticed that you used 4 batteries with the updated version. Do you think 4 batteries are necessary? Would the updated version work with 3 batteries as well? You mentioned a few cautions about the old version. Does that mean you don't recommend the old version? I found the "Victron Orion-Tr DC-DC Charger Isolated 12/12 30A" for new version is out of stock and Victron told me that it may be available for next month and I am a little worried if I get delayed with my work. Your advice will be very helpful and thank you for your answers in advance!

Love all your videos. Im beginning to build my system that will be 16cell in a 8s2p config for 24v @ 560ah +/- depending on whats available to me. I want to feed it with either 6 or 8 panels in either a 2s3p or 2s4p config. I saw your diagram for a 6 panel setup but when doing a 8 panel 2s4p would it just be panel to panel in series, and then all 4 of them in series going to one set of wires that ultimately go to the controller? Thanks

@EXPLORISTlife

Without knowing the specifics of your exact inverter, it's tough to say... but, I'd guess your array voltage is too high. Remember... a 12V panel is pretty much never 12V and is usually closer to 20V. Wired in 2s2p like you are saying... you could be pushing 40V to your 24V Inverter: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6G3Mo_OHmQY.html

@@EXPLORISTlife You're on point there. Measured voltage off the panels is 35 V. The input range of the inverter is 20-45 volts, though, so should be ok there.

Love your videos, watched the one about fuses or not fusing and my question pertains to that....I have a 100/50 MPPT controller and 4 250 watt panels at 24 volts to my battery bank at 12 volts..each panel puts out open circuit voltage of 37.5 and 8.85 A short circuit Current I think I can run 2p/2s which would give me 75 volts and 17.5 amps per array..The fuse rating of each panel is 15A..combined they are 17.5 amps so what size fuse could I put to fuse for each panel or do I put a bigger 20 amp one to cover the combined 17.5 of the short circuit current for bothin the one array? or is there a better way to go and still work within the 100/50 controller limits?

Hi Nate, I don't know if you have made video about wiring batteries but I thought I'd ask about wiring parallel vs. Series for batteries and what the pros and cons would be for each? @EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 3 года назад
I don't have a video about that, but the only reason to wire batteries in anything other than parallel would be to alter the voltage of battery bank to a different voltage than the original batteries. So, if you wanted to make a 24v or 48v battery bank out of 12v batteries, you'd have to wire in series (or series parallel). If you were making a 12v battery bank out of 6v batteries, you'd need to wire in series (or series parallel). Wiring 12v batteries in parallel to make a 12v battery bank is the way to go for 95% of use cases.

I've been watching several of your videos and enjoying them a lot! I decided to go with a bluetti AC200P for my truck camping setup. The question I have for you is, will 3 bluetii PV120 panels hooked together in parallel pull the 35 volts needed to register a charge? I'm very new to solar, so I don't want to mess up anything or buy something that doesn't work or under powers. Originally, I was going to purchase 2 PV200 watt panels, but in low light, it seems it might not register the 35 volt minimum to charge. I believe 3 PV120 panels connected in parallel would be enough volts and possibly better than 2 PV200 panels? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm honestly not sure if series or parallel matters for my unit, and I'm not sure if 2 PV200 panels or 3 PV120 panels are the way to go.

Great video as always. Can you elaborate why it's not recommended to have series-parallel strings with different numbers of panels? Is it bad to have different voltages from each string coming together? I was thinking of adding 2 more panels on my trailer roof to have 4 in total, all connected in one series string. I currently have a pair in series as well as a second pair in series in a portable suitcase that come together at the branch connectors (I only connect the portable suitcase when at a site). Each pair is identical in panels, voltage and current. The setup is great but wanting to add a bit more capability on the roof.

@@EXPLORISTlife Watts Law calculation answered my question, thanks for that video link. The math shows the only way it's worth while is by adding another 2-panel series string and not having the 4-panel series string or I lose a ton of efficiency. Thanks for sharing your knowledge sir.

I'm installing four 210 watt solar on my sailboat. I considered series connection for high voltage/low amps. But my concern would be shading on panels lowering output. Would it be better to wire port side in series, starboard in series, then the two in parallel? This would reduce the chance of sails shading on side and lowering output.

Your videos are REALLY helpful....... I have a question about series/parallel panels I have not seen answered anywhere. I have 6 panels 24/200 in 3 sets of 2 series. I know if a panel gets a little shading it significantly affects the output. But if I have two panels in series and one gets shaded, does that impact the power output of the unshaded panel reaching the solar charger? Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Any shading on the array will reduce the output. Solar panels need to be in the sun to perform optimally.

So I’d like you maybe in the next video when you’re probably already doing it but talk about the voltages as you wire these what happens to the voltage and the amperage when you wire in parallel as opposed to wiring and series and then holy crap what happens when you do both? And aray is about 60 feet from the house with #14 stranded wire then to # 12 solid romex Because it was already installed through the foundation and I think that might be the weak link but I have currently two panels at 24 V I’m going to add two panels and I wanna raise the voltage because longer distances amperes travel better with higher voltage? Is the solid romex a hindrance or a RESISTANCE? Thanx for the video❤️🇺🇸

The Series is fantastic, question Can I connect 4s to 3s 2parallel solar panels, to ending in one string of 7 in series, for a total of 10 panels, I'm trying to find out which is a better parallel string of 5 which yield 263.0 volts with 4400 watts or 8 in series will yield 420.8 volts with 3520 watts and the 4s combine to 3s2p, is all relate to the limit 450 volts for the inverter and 4500 watts also a limit of the inverter, panels have 440 watts, 52.6 Voc, and 10.2 amp of Ioc, imp 9.8 amp

can you do it the other way around, say hook up 4 panels in parallel, and then have another 4 panels in parallel, but then connect the 2 sets of parallels into a series? the reason I ask is because I have a yeti 1000, and it has a pwm charge port and an mppt charge port. I have 2 separate sets of mc4 cables going to each charge controller. When I take it with me on the road, I wanted to hook up my panels in 24v instead of 12v, can I simply plug the pos and neg together, and then attach the other pos and neg to a 24v controller? I couldn't find any information on doing parallel series... only series parallel.

Hi Nate. Do you know what happens to the Voc when panels are wired in parallel? Does the Voc remain the same (assuming identical panels). I’ve read that wiring panels in series results in the Voc being added together. I have a system with a controller limited to 23 Voc (CTEK) and am trying to figure out the largest solar panel system I can create without exceeding the 23 Voc. If you could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am building a micro system solar panels charging three 12v batteries in a tool box. I have procured some used panels that are putting out actual 21v and 5A, I have six panels, wiring parallel and series I could set up as series three panels parallel two, or series two parallel three, the result would be 63v 10amp, or 42v 15amp, I have a victron ppt 100/30, is there any advantage to push for the higher voltage? thank you I have learned a lot from your videos.
@simplisticvitality2359
@simplisticvitality2359 2 года назад
So in theory, i could run 4 - 100 watts in series -parallel. So if using you examples @ 20 volt each and 5 amp So all wired would be 40 volts and 10 ams , to charge a 12 volt battery bank . So the Victron 75 /15 would work right?

At around the 3:15 mark you mention that you shouldn't have a 3 panel series string, and a 2 panel series string wired in Parallel, but what if each of the series was of the same voltage with similar wattage output? I only ask, because I have two 100 watt panels wired in series right now going to my charge controller, but wanted to just add a single 210 watt 24v panel to the mix - so i'd have the 2 panel in series connected in parallel with the single 24v panel, just pushing more amps and watts to the mppt charge controller. Do you see any issues with that? Update: 'two hours later', after watching your 'How to Wire Different Sizes of Camper Solar Panels Together' video, I think I'll be good to go. The single '24v 210w Panel' {Newpowa} has a Vmp of 33.54 Volts with an Imp of 6.24 Amps and the two '12v 100w Panels' {Renogy} have a combined Vmp of 35.8 volts (17.9 x 2) with an Imp of 5.72 Amps...so, If I'm understanding it correctly, by using Watts law, and using the lowest common voltage among the panel 'arrays', I'd multiply the 33.54 volts by the sum of the amp output of each array, which is 11.96 amps to get 401 watts - so pretty close to the 410 that I should theoretically get in optimum conditions.

I am planning on putting 5 175W solar panels on my van. If I can't wire them in series parallel with an odd #, but want to keep amps down, what do you recommend?
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 3 года назад
As you've likely learned, you can only wire in series and parallel with 5 panels. I would recommend wiring all 5 panels in series (with a properly sized MPPT charge controller) to keep voltage drop and wire size to a minimum. This would also provide the MPPT charge controller with plenty of voltage to really do its job.

Yes, there should be overcurrent protection between the battery and the charge controller. I prefer fuses with no switches: www.explorist.life/2000w-inverter-200-400ah-lithium-200-to-700w-solar-camper-wiring-diagram/

Firstly I want to say hello and thank you very much for your very informative videos I am very much a new be when it comes to solar power and I wanted to run a few numbers by you to make sure I have my maths right and I also want to pick your brain on how long it would take to charge a 400 ah battery in ideal conditions for the set-up I was for I am just starting the process of making an off-grid campervan with the end goal of being self-sufficient and completely off grid So now I have rambled on enough let me give you some numbers Firstly I wanted 4 300w solar panels Which I was going to run in series parallel at 33v 9.2a Which by my maths works out as 66v 18.4a I believe that that is right for a series parallel right? I have a victron mppt 100/20 Assuming that is correct my mppt should be able to handle that load but my question especially with the amps it is very close to the upper end of the mppt would that put undue stress on my mppt And lastly I don't know how to work out the maths on how long that would take to charge my 400ah battery I'm very sorry that this was a very long-winded comment but as I am new to the game I just want to make sure I have it right what is it you say do it right do it once Again thank you very much for the informative videos and long may it continue
