Only problem with wiring the usb/voltmeter with the cig socket is you end up fusing it all for the higher load the cig socket can handle. I would run the cig socket separate off its own 10A fuse and run the dual usb and voltmeter off a 5A fuse. Love your video's so hope you don't think I'm splitting hairs, please take this as a constructive comment. :-)
@BigVanSmallWorld

you are right I just wanted to keep it simple as I have seen others on here make it look really complicated :)
@jbsmith1
@jbsmith1 5 лет назад
hi yep good point,. Actually the more I think about this idealy each should be fused so: 1A for the meter, 5A for the usb and 10A for the cig socket.
@jbsmith1

yep all valid points. I guess it all come down to how much is too much and how well do you sleep at night!;-)

Use Anderson plugs for your fridge much more reliable than cigarette lighter sockets. I bet you will change that cheap solar controller for an MPPT type , you waste too much power with that PWM type (I hope I have got the abbreviations right). Neat work though.

OZ Camper Travels I’m trying to keep it simple and basic to show how easy it can be done. But you’re rite can always upgrade later on. Thanks for positive feedback really appreciate it 🤓🤙

Yea. 100w panel, gives 100w at 17.5v When using PWM, the panel is never 17.5, it's at battery voltage, 12-13.8v. A little bit of maths shows PWM can only hope for 68-78watts out of a 100w panel. Mount said panel flat, and you'll get around 50watts at best. 50w/12v=4.1a MPPT keeps the panel at 17.5v allowing full power, which because of the dc to dc conversion isn't 5amps as state at 17.5v on the panel label. 100w/12v=8.3amps. A fair old difference to pwm, using exactly the same panel :)

I bought one recently and it came ready wired up just like that :-) I was pondering which fuse to use with it but think I might pinch the 12V power socket to mount behind the fridge on its own fuse and add either another USB socket or a switch instead

Hi Mel , I'm just starting my first van conversion and electric's are without a doubt my weakest point so here's the stupid question how do you work out which gauge of wire to use for different appliances? Really enjoying the channel
@BigVanSmallWorld
@BigVanSmallWorld 5 лет назад
Hi Dave so glad you’re enjoying my channel I simple rule is to use the same or bigger gauge wire that’s all really being use on the appliances I use household 13am 7.5m lamp wire (B&Q) for lighting / fan / USB charger etc 🤙🤓

Mel you may want to ebay search "tri rated cable" That stuff on your desk looks rather large diameter for the amp rating. Tri rated is used in industrial electrical projects. 1.5mm (red crimps) is spec'd for 21amps. Blue crimps and 2.5mm 30amps. It won't be any more expensive then the stuff you've got there DIN plugs/sockets are a good alternative to ciggy sockets, as they have a "clip" rather then being just the spring loaded tip. The waeco fridges have a red piece that comes off the plug to convert to DIN.

Nice one Mell 👍 That is the easiest way to do it However I was a electronics engineer and load, Fusing all together is not the best and your load indication will be will not be accurate due to the links between each unit All that said only an nerd like me would ever know LOL Keep up the good work mate 👍 Best regards Dave, Jo and little Louie 👍😀🐾🍺
@BigVanSmallWorld
@BigVanSmallWorld 5 лет назад
thanks for that Dave. I don't think it really matters as the draw is so low on the USB charger it's like.5amp max the main draw would be the 12v socket I just wanted to show a simple way of doing this as i get asked all the time. thanks for watching :)

Hi Mel, bit late to the party but would it not be better to run the supply cables to the middle voltage display so if you lose one of the side piggy back wires you would still have the opposite side with power as opposed to no power to the voltage indicator or the 12 V socket if you lose an output wire from the twin USB with your set up? Also if you wire to the voltage display you will always know when the circuit is live, putting the live to the USB you could break the wire to the display and show no voltage when in fact the supply to the Twin USB is still live. Just a thought. Love you enthusiasm and have picked up some good tips from You BB.

@BigVanSmallWorld
@BigVanSmallWorld 3 года назад
If you have 3 pins one is probably for a back light there should be positive and negative on the back of not then you will have to use a multi meter to find out what is what good luck 👍
