How to work out / set the ppm value of your Software Defined Radio using SDR# - calibrate frequency

If you are using a generic SDR, you will need to know the ppm frequency calibration value. You can easily work this out using SDR Sharp if you have a constant signal source on a known frequency.
This video shows how to do it on a 162 MHz weather channel, an aviation ATIS channel, and a DMR Trunked network Control Channel.
This is a quick way to calculate the PPM value of your Software Defined Radio - and easy to do, even for beginners.
Thanks for watching the Frugal Radio (FR) channel!

I'm new to this stuff and it was the 8-Bit Guy who introduced me to amateur radio. Also I'm learning plenty from watching your videos they have been very helpful... You have earned yourself a new subscriber. Thank you! 🙏😎👍

I got to say I find your videos very informative and that have answered a lot of questions for me regarding the sdr dongle. I was having such a hard time with it. But with the help of your videos It has helped tremendously and got me back into the sdr field of the radio hobby. Thanks and 73’s DE KC2SGI

You are reading my mind at the moment! I'm about to buy my first SDR and I'm using your videos to help me decide on software and hardware. Whenever you release a video it answers a question I have on setting up an SDR and getting the most out of it. Thanks! While I'd love to afford one that costs a coupe of hundred £s I'm likely to go with one of the dongles such as the NooElec with the ham bands, in the spirit of frugality of course! I really look forward to more of your videos.

Airspy calibration seems (to me) to work differently. An Airspy Calibrate video would be very welcome. Although I've read and followed the Airspy calibration instructions I am not 100% sure I have done it correctly. "Inject a known and accurate signal" is where I get confused.
@FrugalRadio

Hello Ewan. Yes, calibrating an AirSpy would indeed be different. I've owned a few of their devices (and still do), but have not need to calibrate any of them. I'll add it to a list of future potential videos and film it if I do the procedure!

Just found your channel. Really enjoying the content. I'm fairly new to sdr and based in Dublin Ireland. Have a sdrplay rsp1a. Just checking what is the best indoor antenna for pocsag in and around 153.000.000

Hi, and welcome to the channel! Great to have you tracking along. POCSAG signals tend to be very strong, and if you are in the city itself you'll likely just need a small antenna. I successfully decoded pagers for years using the small magnetic whip that came with a very inexpensive generic dongle. I'd recommend just experimenting with whatever antennas you already have. Happy decoding!

So why are there no software geniuses who can create a button/option that will fine-tune this automatically if you click on it or push an additional button on the usb stick or something. I mean, if everybody agrees how important this is, why not make it much more user-friendly? Imagine how much time you win ... time-efficiency over a decade of use would be enormous!

In addition to all of this knowledge you should let your sdr warm up a bit to let everything stabilize. It's just as true today as it was in the days of tube and crystal ovens. Trick is to not let it get too warm lol
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio Год назад
Very true. These old SDRs without TCXOs function best in a stable temperature environment. Changes in temperature will affect the drift. I had one placed in the attic. Throughout the day the air temperature up there changed a lot, and made this old SDR unusable without correcting the PPM. Newer ones handled it just fine. Now I use the old one on a room downstairs where the temp doesn't fluctuate. Works much better!

I can only here stuff on FM, nothing else. Have tried a couple different antennas. Any ideas as to why I can't get anything else? I want to be able to pick up my local police dept on vhf.
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 2 года назад
First thing is to check the fashion setting on your SDR. Try setting it somewhere from 28-32. Also make sure you are using an antenna tuned for VHF. Try to find a good strong VHF signal to try, preferably something that is constantly transmitting, like a NOAA weather channel. Once it is sounding good, try the other VHF frequencies you want to monitor.
@dr_jaymz

I'm guessing its best to let the dongle warm up before setting it.
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 3 года назад
Yes, you're absolutely correct. The generic dongles are prone to drift over a 30 minutes period. However you can set it initially, then go back and adjust it as it warms up.

If I understood it correctly, we need to fine tune the ppm every time we change frequency. Can you please confirm?
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 4 года назад
No. For the generics you just need to work out the value and enter it once. Maybe after 20 minutes of using the device you'll see some drift and can adjust again, but then it should stay relatively stable. If you have an RTL-SDRv3 or SAMrt dongle, you won't need to do it at all.

Hi I just installed SDRSharp V1.0.0.1760 looks great, runs, (useing RTL-SDR/Windows) In over my head after only using my Uniden Trunk Tracker IV UBCD396T/UBC RH-96. First question how do you turn off the voice of "Sally" at first I thought wow, how cool, now its a bit like getting married lol .. Also using SDRTouch on a Android tablet, It works. Second Question 😁 as my primary interest is knowing whats "on air" including digital hand held coms in my, lets say field of influence, 20 miles, what would be you Ultimate mobile, SDR Rig be? or the hand held/portable hardware options, still the best way to go? All the best

Hi @Joe Cizin. I've never had Sally, and my wife avoids the radio room like the plague, so I don't know what you mean ;-) As for the ultimate mobile rig - I'll post a video of some of my shacks, including my old car at some point. What I would have wanted to add was a Panasonic Toughbook, linked up to multiple SDRs in the trunk (boot). I never quite got to that part of the project when running the ex-Police Ford Crown Victoria. Once I get my next ex-police vehicle, I might try and set that up. I did have several Uniden BCT & BCD radios mounted, along with a 2m/70cm dual band Yaesu rig, in addition to a handheld transceiver and a handheld scanner (mostly used for close call). But I wanted a way to view all the trunked system information. However with data access being much less expensive these days, perhaps that is the way to go. Set up the SDRs at home, and utilise some kind of data stream to the toughbook, or possibly even an Android tablet. Sorry for the delayed reply!

Good question! GSM & LTE signals are very wide, and generally the frequencies are not published, so it makes them unsuitable for setting the PPM.
