Terry White shows how to get started with Apple's NEW ProRAW format on iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max running iOS 14.3 or later. See how to enable Raw shooting in the native Camera app and then easily bring those images into Lightroom.
I SIMPLY want to know how to import Pro Raw images into LR Classic on my Windows 10 desktop. Don’t want to use LR Mobile app. This is all soooo confusing !!!! Ugh…..
Terry I appreciate your video and found it very helpful. I do have a question though. I have an album in LR Mobile auto importing files from my camera roll and like that feature. However, dpreview
Hi Terry. I love the fact I can shoot RAW from the iPhone, however when I bring the photos in obviously they are very flat and dull. Why is it when I bring in RAW photos from my A7S iii, and I add some of the FroPack presets they automatically look great without any editing from me, but when I do the same with Apple Pro RAW photos, they just come out massively bright when I apply any preset? Actually forget which preset I apply, is there some kind of wizard that is different with Apple Pro RAW files than Sony RAW files? any help would be appreciated !!! thanks
Thanks, Terry, for this very interesting intro to ProRAW. It might be worth posting a short video on how to properly transfer ProRAW shots from an iPhone to Lightroom (Mac) or even to Photos (Mac). I’m currently stuck with some 600 ProRAW pictures in my new iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 14.3) and just can’t find a path to uploading them onto my iMac (I5 processor 3.3 GHz, Big Sur 11.1, 16 GB RAM, lots of storage space), either into Photos or Lightroom Classic 10.1. I’ve desperately tried to import via the USB cable, via iCloud, via AirDrop, and nothing works properly, being fully aware, of course, that the sheer volume of these ProRAW shots is way bigger than JPGs. Even importing JPGs into Photos (Mac) and LRC (Mac) crashes the import process, although it worked seamlessly before ProRAW. Does anybody experience similar difficulties? If not, how do you proceed? Are there reliable Apple guidelines about the transfer process? Thanks to all.
Hi Jean, there's an easy way to do this. On your Mac Apple gives you an Application called Image Capture. With Image Capture you can plug in your iPhone via a USB cable and transfer .DNG (Raw) files directly to your hard drive. Hope that helps.
nice video ... BUT...it all breaks down when you have shot a pro raw image using night mode or some other settings. what the Iphone (i'm using a 12pro max btw) displays on it's screen is great....what LR imports is a disaster and very difficult to work with. it's hard to process it back to a usable image (beyond something as simple as a WB tweak) so this tells me you do NOT get the raw file in LR....you get something that was raw but apple has still added some tweaks that LR is unable to figure out yet....maybe it imports fine for simple snaps in good light; but that's NOT why i choose raw, especially for portraiture - does this make any sense to you ? agree/disagree ?? all in all i'm not a happy camper and considering different software if it can handle pro raw better
Hi Terry With Apple Proraw turned on which it the best quality option to use 1. High Efficiency or 2.Most Compatible I want to get to pure Raw data at highest quality thank you
How do you set LR to auto import images taken on the iPhone? When they are synced with the cloud and I open them in LRCC, how do I get the original Pro RAW file?
Not sure which LR Interface you're using. It doesn't look like my version of Classic (normal) so not sure where those controls are. Wish you would have demonstrated this with the classic version of LR.
I really expected you to detail the differences between normal RAW and Apple ProRaw esp. in regards to Lightroom. And there are differences. It’s not just the “option to shoot raw in the native camera app”. It’s a new format (or extension to DNG). Halida has published a detailed article, FYI) What you have shown could have been filmed, e.g. capturing with LR, years ago...
The biggest difference is that Apple ProRAW files contain the additional processing that Apple does in the iPhone processor to yield a better looking image/pixels. For example, when in wide angle prior to ProRAW there was no way to get that Wide Angle lens as a Raw file even if you used the Lr Camera on iOS. This was because the Apple "magic" they were using to produce that image. Now with ProRAW you can use the Wide Angle lens to capture a Raw file. I was hoping that this would also be possible with things like Portrait Mode in Raw, but it's not just yet.
This is just a guess, but I would assume it either has something to do with the bit-depth of the formats... or more likely how the readout and subsequent conversion to the target format is implemented in the app you are using...
My pro-raw images are over-exposed when importing to lightroom. Even using Lightroom mobile on my iPhone 12 pro max has the exact same issue. Any ideas?
Heard it is a known issue and will be until Adobe tweaks in the profile for Apple ProRAW. Until then you should be able to get things control by dropping exposure.
@@ScotTheGr8 the odd thing is that I used moment app md shot proraw. The image imported perfectly fine so not sure if it’s a profile issue. Not to mention this is not consistently happening across all devices. Anyhow, I returned it. Will buy it again after the holidays. Probably switching to the pro instead of pro max. When they said it’s big and heavy, it’s definitely a factor. Just picking it up sometimes feel like it’s going to be accidentally slip off because of the weight.
lightroom are missing TONE MAPPING. if you import same APPLE RAW file in lets say Dark Room app on phone its fine. Sp we are waiting for lightroom to get more compattiple with apple raw and include tone mapping. I have same issue. All people have same issue
