It's immeasurably important to make sure that we take time for ourselves if we want to perform at our best at work and in life. Working more does not always mean working better. Make time to sharpen your axe.

I wish companies saw the value in this. Mental health is just as important as physical health. When it's cared for, people aren't just happier. They function better. They're more productive, they collaborate better, and the entire team benefits.

Out of all the megalomaniacs, the egotistical politicians and business owners, Simon Sinek is a breath of fresh air in the real world. You can tell where he is human and where he is superhuman, all without flaunting it too little or less, your mind is much needed in these times, Simon!

Most work environment's dont factor in burn-out or employee fatigue. Even if they do a lot of them play it off as it being your fault instead of theirs since they can't afford to admit the latter. The amount of begging i've had to do to let a manager know my back is killing me, or I feel like im over-heating, or im running out of energy to avoid losing employment is incredible.

What a beautiful concept! like you said, some days you’re done before you’ll even start, and it’s great to know, there’s at least one company, who understands that in the end of the day, we’re all human, and sometimes life gets to be too much, and that you can take a day off without lying and or pretending, And therefore won’t have to feel guilty for feeling bad, and now guilty too! Are you hiring? 😊

A smarter lumberjack would just take 2 sharp axes for the day and switch halfway through! They could then finish an hour earlier :)
@shreyashasane9100
@shreyashasane9100 2 года назад
whatever job you do, they must be paying you handsomely.
@CST1992
@CST1992 2 года назад
Don't forget that the lumberjack still has to take the hour to sharpen his axes. So in the end he doesn't really save any time. In other words: Case 1(one axe): work 4 hours, sharpen axe, work 4 hours - total 9 hours. Case 2 (two axes): work 4 hours, switch axe, work 4 hours, sharpen axes at home(30 minutes each) - total 9 hours. If the lumberjack has to take time off anyway for lunch, then might as well take the hour to sharpen his axe as well.
@CST1992
@CST1992 2 года назад
Note that this fact doesn't change no matter how many axes you add in the problem. If, say, a particular axe can be used for 8 hours before it has to be sharpened(invalidating my 30-minute point above), then the two axes still need to be sharpened for 2 hours every 2 days. This is just going to endlessly extend no matter how many axes you add - say you have 5, then you need to spend 5 hours every 5 days to keep them sharp. So in the end, you don't really gain any time(in fact, you are at a loss because you had to spend money to buy the additional axes).
@pencil_unleashed
@pencil_unleashed 2 года назад
Sean Smith bro this is not about just one particular day. Next day you have to come with two sharpened axes which means he would be sharpening his axe at his 🏠 for an hour anyway.

So much of this is quietly happening with people working from home right now during the pandemic. Now companies in the UK are telling their staff they want them back in the office. Sooo, you want people to face traffic, extra time for the commute, worse conditions, greater costs for fuel and food, inconvenience for post, appointments, kids, housework and all kinds of other hidden benefits, JUST so you can check on the workload that IS being done by staff right now. And YES ducking work for an hour here and there when you don’t got it. AND you are surprised that they don’t want to return to the office?

I’m more burnt out with relationships than work.. work is a safe place for me to feel excited, confident, and fulfilled again.. but relationships feel draining and sad and anxiety provoking and, honestly, hopeless at times
@sotl97
@sotl97 3 года назад
It could be that your relationships are structured in a way that they are consuming your energy rather than building your energy. Rather than cutting them off, they need to be repaired. For example, a person who is always asking you for your resources (time, money, a ride, a favor) needs to have boundaries set. You need to let him or her know that the amount of resources they are asking from you is outside of the boundaries of a healthy relationship and that it needs to end. Or, perhaps you have a family member who only wants to complain about other family members with you. You need to let him or her know that this kind of gossip relationship is no longer acceptable and that you need to change the conversations when he or she is around, that you will no longer entertain gossip conversations. It's all about developing healthy relationships. Simply cutting off relationships that are working isn't the answer. Why? Relationships involve two parties, you and the other individual. If you have unhealthy relationships in your life, half of the reason for that is you. If you simply cut off the relationship, not fix it, you are not doing the work on yourself to ensure future relationships don't end up the same way. You will just go from one toxic or draining relationship to the next, and wonder why this always happens to you. You have to take ownership of the part you play in draining relationships. If the other party will not change and continues to be draining, that's when it is healthy to cut it off.

Sorry to hear that! Some of that could be worth asking the questions about which relationships you are choosing to be in and secondly, how you are choosing to show up. Work is great for what it is, but isn't designed to be replacement for relationships. That strategy will come with an expiration date.

I've learned so much from other videos. Thank you for that. For some reason, this didn't connected correctly. The direct correlation between "sharpening the axe" and "talking vacation" is not right. Talking vacation or rejuvenating can be one among many of othe other items under "Sharpening the axe" list. It won't be even at the top of the list. Having a consistent plan to identify and improve the skills needed for your career may be one among the top of "sharpening" list, among others.

I don’t think that it’s a con man story, it’s just that the people listening to the video aren’t the ones who implement this sort of environment. CEOS send their employees to these trainings, but they don’t implement the kind of culture he’s talking about because they don’t actually care.

LOL this is also real bro. When you're in support or operations team, can't help but standby and wait until the shift ends to finish what needs to be finish - even if you don't feel like it coz' the client's concerns, mostly the prio ones, cannot be set aside just because of what you feel. 🤣🤣🤣 Well, to prevent burnout for this type of work is to have good chemistry and relationship with your teammates that you don't have to take your concerns somewhere or take off work just to vent your stress. Coz' your team will support you and help you go through it without risking the team's service and performance ✌️💙
