The one time I worked with another musician… A saxophone player who was going to accompany me at a little show… She asked me, where is the chart? Well, I thought she was the real musician and I was just a guy with a guitar… I figured that she would just figure it out. Which she did. But what was great was that she had the expectation that I would be professional enough to have a chart for her to work from. I’d say that’s pretty cool. Even though apparently I was not that professional, but I won’t let that happen again.

"I'm also not a morning person, but my kids are morning people, so I guess I'm a morning person" Story of my life.Well put, mister. An idea for a video - how to carve out space for music, practice and creativity with kids constantly disturbing the workflow. Thank you for making great content, Justin!

Justin Ostrander, Welcome to the Southern Hemisphere of Auckland New Zealand, I have been playing for years mate, people over here talk about the numbers chart, But I have never really seen one Until you turned up on my doorstep. I teach guitar to people (But I have to say, always the old way) But Holy Shit, Seeing how easy the number system is & the way you have shown me, they will all be doing it from your way this coming Monday. As long as they know the chords & don't use a Capo (Or use one if they want), the Idea is so simple Geez mate, Thank you,,,,, Gib

I just picked up a 3 hour country gig and all the charts were using the Nashville system, hence this info has been invaluable to me. Man… I’m so glad I found your channel. As a gigging / recording guitarist everything you share is just gold and I thank you so much! Subscribed.

Thanks for the live reply on my comment. And yes my main focus is Chords/Rhythm. For a beginner or anyone that don't see it. Knowing what basic chords go together is huge. In the 80's just starting out I ask that question to a lot of people , teachers included. And no one could (would?) answer it. And I couldn't afford lessons. So spent years putting down and picking up the guitar. Btw over the years I talked to many who dropped the guitar for the same "I know how to play the chords I just can't figure out which chord goes with which chord". About 10 years ago Scott Grove (Groovy Music Lessons) had a video on the NNS. Now. I know why sometimes C+G went with an F (C-1-4-5) and sometimes a D (G-1-4-5).... I now knew what a Key was. And that you could play the same song in different Key's just following the NNS. And that I could learn the Mandolin, Uke , Bass Keyboard, Slide/Dobro/Lap/Pedal...I just had to learn to finger the chords for that particular instrument. Sorry so long. But if I would've known the NNS in 85. I know I woulda been a professional musician. Not Famous ! Just a player that would've known what to do.... Thanks. Love your channel.

Thank you for sharing this information- I’ve been on the hunt to try and figure this all out- I did find a few pages with some instructions but your 2 videos - part 1 and 2 really put it all together ! So many good players on RU-vid mention these numbers but don’t explain what they mean- it’s like a different language when you first hear it. It’s nice to have a bit of understanding now when I hear the numbers mentioned in a chart. Thanks again brother! Awesome!!!

I remember in LA, some of the busiest keyboard players would have multiple rigs and have them set up in different studios if they had multiple dates that day.

How do you chart minor songs? Say you are in Am, is that the "1", or is it the "6-", seeing that the C Major would be the 1?
@JustinOstrander
@JustinOstrander Год назад
Very few songs are truly in minor key. Most of it is just relative minor. So I stick to 6- UNLESS the chords are based in harmonic minor (1-, ii-7b5, b3 major, 5 dominant, etc). For example, if the chords were Em, Am B7 with an F#m7b5 thrown in there, I would chart the Em as a 1-. For Em C G D, I'm charting that in G.

I’m assuming the artist doesn’t mind you sharing their music before it’s released. I’m leading sessions with an artist now on his new record and I / we can’t talked about anything until it’s all finished, I can’t even share with my friends what I’m working on, is it just different with each artist? I’m really digging your channel, trying to watch all your videos. I found you from the Zac Child’s interview you did.

Worktapes, demos, indie stuff is what I generally share here. If I think it's something I need to keep under wraps, I will mute the vocal. I don't make videos of any label artist's songs.
