To understand crime fiction, you will have to read crime fiction works (novels) and, at the same time, works about crime fiction - in the form of research papers or critical works in book form by established authors (new authors as well if they have done well). It would be good to start with the works according to the choice of your timeframe - contemporary, early 21st-century or the 20th-century. And once you have an idea of how authors weave their crime fiction, you can be prepared to read critical papers or books on crime fiction. All the best! If this is your PhD thesis (on Toni Morrison), then you have to keep your paper focused on her writings only. If this is something that you are writing for your MA or without any specific academic concerns, you can write your papers about any topic chosen from wide literary options.

Right, Elroy! You will need to reinforce your 'idea' or the 'argument' with additional backing to ensure that what you propose, not suppose, is valid and unchallenged for the time being. After your PhD is complete, it can be challenged and even defeated and it does not concern you. :)

Ritika, thanks for this important question! By saying that research should add something new to already existing knowledge, I meant one of the ideal qualities of any research work. If your research is peculiar and it brings an entirely new dimension, it is already a deserving work and you are adding something new already - a new dimension. However, when someone else will work on the same topic, remotely or closely related to it, they might work to add something new to it. That's where what I said will be brought into action. Hi, Deepti! Before you begin to write anything, make sure that you read a lot. You have to read about Wordsworth, his poetry, his art, wisdom and key themes and issues that his poems deal with. Then, you have to ensure that you the 'selected poems' you have thought to consider to validate your research topic, are critiqued widely by the critics and scholars. Read many of those. In the literature review, you have to mention and write about the books that deal with your intended subject. Maurice Bowra's book, Daniel Robinson's guide etc will be helpful. All the best!
