Determined to break into television but uncertain of where to begin? In this video, we’ve crafted an ultimate 6-step guide so that you know exactly what to have in your writer’s portfolio.
Here’s what’s coming up:
• Writing the TV script: spec episodic vs. spec pilot, comedy vs. drama.
• Formatting and platforms: single vs. multi-cam, network vs. cable.
• What to do once your first spec script is completed.
________________________________________________________________________
Over to You:
• Watch your favorite shows. Pay attention to the show’s tone, format, & “home”.
• Create a varied portfolio. Write specs that tonally complement each other.
• What do you think of our methods outlined in this video?
Let us know in the comments section below the video.

Honestly, everyone who asks me, "How can I break in?", should consider writing for TV and streamers. I'm in TV writers' rooms year round, but I don't think I'd be able to say "I've always got work" if I were working exclusively on feature films. Imagine you're a producer and you meet two people, imagine who you're going to be more receptive to: Spec Feature writer: "Hey, you don't know me, but can you lend me a couple of million dollars? It's going to be great, trust me..." TV writer: "Hey, I heard you're writing a whole season of a new show. Wow, that's a lottttt of work... you need some help?" It almost feels like the difference between a person knocking at your door asking for a donation vs a person who can help you when you're moving house--who are you more pleased to see? No wonder people respond more favourably to the TV writer: there's so many shows being created for streamers now, and it's a lot of work: having a writers room full of good minds makes it easier for a showrunner to get their show written.

Hi Script Reader Pro, This the bare bones of truth in the industry whether it's Movie or TV. It has sort of put a dampner as such on my ambitions, but also good to hear the truth in possibilities. I am a prospective TV Comedy writer and I have entered a Spec' Pilot Episode into International Festivals in London, Paris, and Hollywood; and have been finalists in each one of them. Thus, I must be doing something right. However, with this video's revelations, it seems like it was all a waste of time and effort not only in writing but getting it professionally critiqued and entering into these Int'Film Festivals when there is scant hope of getting my work produced. What do you think Script Reader Pro and what does everyone else think please??

Hi Dominic, that's great to hear that you have been a finalist in competitions -- congratulations! In general, we encourage you to keep on writing. As the video mentioned having a portfolio that ranges in ideas yet captures continuity tonally can help get the attention that you deserve. If you'd like to hear from one of our professionals on how to get the pilot/series produced, we recommend checking out our Marketing Mentorship Program!

@@ScriptReaderProLosAngeles How much would this cost please? Everywhere I go is looking for money even for information. I am a disabled man on a weekly subsistance payment and cannot afford much

@@mcdaibhaid Hi Dominic, we understand. The Marketing Mentorship has a subscriber discount, but regular price is $499. If it's something you aren't in the market for, we have plenty of free resources on our site and RU-vid page. We recommend watching the video on how to sell your script to Netflix!

For 1 Hour Dramas, How many BEATS for each ACT?
@ScriptReaderProLosAngeles
@ScriptReaderProLosAngeles Год назад
Hello, it varies per show, as some have four or five. To understand the beats per act, we recommend reading as many pilots as you can. Here's a list of the best TV scripts to download and read for free: www.scriptreaderpro.com/best-tv-scripts/
