Caring for the character is really important. This is true.

Yes please do a video on tension and making us care about the characters!

I sometimes get the impression that suspense is taken for granted (as if it’s purely organic in a story, rather than intentional and crafted on the part of the writer), so this was a really interesting and helpful video! I’ll be thinking of this more consciously in the revisions of my current WIP 🙃

The reader needs to care about the character before they can feel suspense - I really feel this. I just read Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer and the book was dripping with so much foreboding right from the first page. However, because the ominous stuff was all before I got to know the characters it just came off as empty and scary. Your video helped me understand a lot about why that book rubbed me the wrong way.

While caring for your character is really important, I also think there is something to be said about characters you really do not like. Either way having a strong emotion either way is super important. Great video!

Ive often assumed suspense & tension were synonymous but your explanation made it so clear. Natalia is my new go-to Authortube Thesaurus! And yes, I'll take that tension video thanks :-)

Awesome video! So enthused to be participating in Wordstock with everyone. Great point about character goals. Without a goal, there is no crisis, without crisis the character cant make a choice. YOu have a good handle on this. Thanks a lot!

Great video Natalia. I kept nodding in agreement as you shared your wonderful tips on suspense. You are right that building relatable and interesting characters is the first step and I love that you said suspense happens in quiet moments. I need to remember that one.

Natalia...great video! An early mentor used to have a two line comparison about how knowing the character making all the difference before bad things start happening: Harry jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge, Vs. Harry Belafonte jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge. Thanks for being a part of this :)

This was interesting, thank you 😊. I'm interested in that video about caring about characters. Plus I also hope you make that advanced video on formatting too with those features you mentioned but did not show. (Bleeding and how to insert interior designs etc...)

This is absolute perfect timing as I just wrote a short suspenseful story. I gotta be honest, I think I've been using the words suspense and tension synonymously so it was interesting to hear your take on their differences. I see your points. Also, very impressed that you just sat down and spoke with confidence and ease about a topic for several minutes straight! 😃

AzzaYCF Hey! I’m glad this came at the right time, and I do hope you got some takeaways from it! Suspense is tricky, and I’ve definitely struggled with it, so I hope this was helpful!

Thank you so much. This is great timing, because I have two books that have suspense scenes in them. Can you do a video on making us care about the character please and thank you

I never really thought about it, that suspense is a different entity than drama. Maybe this will help me make my drama scenes more dramatic. :)
