As a CNC machinist with over 10 years of experience. I found out that tungsten only allows itself to be cut or damaged if it feels like it.

The intro: I'm Speechless.

To have a decent chance of going through this thing you need a penetrator with a length as long as the side of the cube times the ratio of the density of the tungsten cube and whatever you are shooting at it. So for tungsten or DU round it needs to be something like a APFSDS anti-tank round at least as long as the side of the cube. To do it with a less dense material like copper it needs to be a good shaped charge that can shoot out a nice, straight stream of copper about twice as long as the cube.

I just used a thoriated tungsten welding rod to mix molten brass and the sparked and blew up. I was thinking that the melting point of tungsten was high so it would be ok but maybe the thorium is pyrophoric.

As interesting as this is, since 4 inches is approximately 10cm, or one decimeter, this cube is a cubic decimeter in volume, which in some scientific circles would be of interest. Also a suggestion: take a coilgun but supercool the coil with liquid nitrogen. It won’t be a superconductor but the resistance would be so much lower as to allow a sizable penetrator to go much quicker than typical. IMO it would be smarter to design a Gd/YBCO superconducting coil with interlaced cryogenic plumbing to cool the coils to under their curie point using liquified air, which would be cooled through a stirling cycle cryocooler powered by electricity. It would need to be immensely insulated from the outside to get down to the right temperatures. Advantages include: -Eliminating propellant & a mechanical trigger -Variable muzzle velocity and/or muzzle energy, meaning any ammunition up to a certain size can be used through levitation -No friction or electrical resistance, which prevents overheating when not firing through quenching the coils. A disadvantage -Very heavy projectile launcher, and one that requires large amounts of energy to cool, if not precooled before startup.
