How TYLER MATZEK beat the YIPS and helped the Braves win the World Series

#WorldSeries #matzek #braves #yips
Tyler 'nutsack' Matzek is now one of the most trusted arms out of Brian Snitker's bullpen. He helped the Atlanta Braves to their first World Series with a gutsy Game 6 performance during the NLCS. But before he was with Atlanta, he was playing in an independent league on a team that finished its season 28-72. This story is about Tyler's career, how he made it to the bigs, lost it all to the yips, and fought all the way back.

That 7th inning will live forever in my memory. The image of Luke Jackson with a look of shock and devastation, and his reaction after Matzek slammed the door shut on the Dodgers tells that story well what an epic moment.

The reason why the Braves signed him was their Bench Coach Walt Weiss. He was the former manager of the Rockies when Tyler played there. When he spotted Tyler in Independent ball he convinced the general manager to take a flyer on Tyler.
@AndThatsBaseball
@AndThatsBaseball 2 года назад
YES, Walt always had his back when he struggled in Colorado then he gave him a second chance in Atlanta. There’s a few more interesting parts of this story that I didn’t touch on for the sake of keeping it concise, like how the AirHogs had a mostly Chinese team and lost about 75% of games the years Tyler played for them.

As a Dodgers fan, I remember me getting angry and hating everything. Now that I know Tyler's background, I see that inning in a brand new light. Yes I'm still not happy of the result but now, I tip my hat and bow to Tyler. From possibly never getting a Major League job again due to mental issues to silencing the 2nd best team in baseball on one of the biggest games of his career, ya can't help but feel nothing but respect for him.

I too, have severe anxiety it cost me a lot in my life as well, I was a very good pitcher as well this hits home I’m so happy to see him making a comeback. No matter how good life can be sometimes, anxiety can really affect it. I lost a lot of respect for the Rockies “who lost patience” with him…. I wish the whole organization could feel the way he felt. Nobody ever knows what you’re going through at least cut him and try and get him help not lay him out like he’s roadkill. Good luck Tyler

I'm going to go ahead and say it. Matzek was the MVP of the NLCS despite Rosario having the best offensive series of all time. That 7th inning had Braves country in PTSD and he pulled us out of it. Imagine calling Betts out sitting on the slider and throwing one of the fastest bats in the game three straight heaters in the that intense situation. Placement hardly even mattered Matzek won before the ab began.
@AndThatsBaseball

I was born in ‘95 so I wasn’t around the last time the braces won the World Series. I was at game six, and even knowing how good he had been up to that point, coming in against the dodgers with two on and no out.. it felt like the best we could hope for was to leave the inning tied, or maybe still up one run if he could have a miracle inning. I’ve never witnessed anything like it before, and I would guess I never will again. In those three batters, it went from feeling like the Atlanta curse had come to strike again to KNOWING that game was over. As soon as you saw betts strike out, and look foolish doing it you could just feel it. We never would have won the NLCS without Rosario, and we may not have won the World Series without Soler. But for my money, no single player was important as Matzek. No single inning has ever been as important for the braves as the bottom of the seventh in game six was. I know it’s fresh so it’s weird to think about it like this but that inning was bigger than Sid’s slide. It was probably bigger than justice’s homerun. It was bigger than Eddie’s homerun in the same game. It was one of the greatest playoff relief appearances ever. I won’t say the greatest because there have been many. But I really hope in the years to come people really understand just how incredible that was. I might be biased since I witnessed it in person, but I think it’s the greatest half inning in braves history.
@AndThatsBaseball
@AndThatsBaseball 2 года назад
It was easily the most intense/exciting inning of this postseason. To go out there and strike out two former MVPs during the most high leverage situation of the series you gotta have brass balls. I guess that’s why they call him Tyler Nutsack now

It is amazing a guy out of baseball to a guy who play a very big role in getting the Braves a ring. pitched in 13 of 16 games 3-0 record got a lot of big outs. You know it had to be a good feeling for Snitker knowing that if he can just get to the 7th or 8th inning with the lead (based on a few time Matzek pitched both 7 and 8) that Matzek and Smith were lights out in post season.

@AndThatsBaseball
@AndThatsBaseball 2 года назад
That’s easy to say but I don’t think it’s necessarily true. The advancements teams have made when it comes to mental health in just the past few years are incredible. The 2015 Rockies were not as equipped to help one of their players as any team is in 2021. Sure, they could’ve been more patient, but at the end of the day, this was something that Tyler had to overcome on his own. Also, Walt Weiss was the manager of those Rockies and bench coach for these Braves and Matzek has talked about how much he likes him as a coach.

I get so tired of hearing this. There is no stigma about anxiety. It's a simple matter of business. Why would I rob a guy of his opportunity who doesn't suffer from anxiety just to wait on you to get over it. How is that fair to the person without anxiety? There's nothing physically wrong with you. People have to lead companies, soldiers, and nations with real pressure and consequences and I'm supposed to feel bad for you because you put to much pressure on yourself?
