It is genuinely more environmentally friendly that harvesting cow leather. Cow leather I volvos even more chemical processes, and cows account for massive amounts of carbon even without the whole process. Also, these are made from fruit waste, which would have already added tons of carbon as they decomposed.

@@MansAnalog You think they just skin a cow & poof it's the leather used on the market? You do realize that real leather has to be processed in an industrialized fashion that pollutes with all the chemicals used & has a big carbon footprint because it's industrialized, so it's put through machinery too in many cases poor countries (so energy being used definitely not renewable) on top of the bad farming practices to get the leather in the 1st place. There are some great RU-vid videos that show how leather is processed & the negative effects it can have when industrialized as it has been.

Probably a binding additives. A cellulose binders that reacts to heat. Probably alkali based same with the one in the tannery but safely defuses when heat treated living bonded cellulose. But not sure with protective coating. Maybe hydrophobic and oliophobic coating.

I had a phone case made of "vegan leather." It was quite nice and convincing until it fell apart after a few months. That's the difference. Leather ages well, this stuff can't handle rough use.

Good for the people that like to be vegan, but I think the problem is more within the process of production. We should be advocating to find a solution for water conservation, clean energy use, pollution and humane living situations for cows and other animals in the farming industry instead of “go vegan”.

The thing is that the additives, the heat, the energy used probably isn’t really good for the environment. Apart from that, calling any leather-like material vegan leather is used to get people to pay a lot, not because it’s actually comparable. Most vegan leather is also made from plastic which doesn’t decompose and is really cheap compared to real leather. Even if they don’t use animal products, it might still have a negative effect on animals or the world in general.

And now that we are seeing so much changes in our environment, i think it's time we people can cut down on our usage so we don't have to wear masks our entire life :) *we can live without a fashionable leather toxic belt, but we won't be able to live with toxic air quality* But rest, do whatever you wanna do✌

@@llamaliammm If you get in an accident, it basically acts as an extra layer of skin. It splits and tears so that your skin gets less damage than it would otherwise.

@@llamaliammm other than the first reason that was already written, leather is way more resistant than normal clothes, so it can slide for a while without exposing your skin right away. If you get in a crash and you slide, the leather will bear most of the friction with the asphalt so you don't have to. The fact that it's thick and doesn't deform (unlike clothes) also means that it's gonna distribute the impacts better, making your body feel less of it. 100psi on one square inch of your body would feel way worse than 1psi over 10 square inches, even if they're the same force.

If the "protective coating" has plasic in it then real leather is better and more sustainable. Real leather can last for many decades longer and isn't as harmful to the environment when thrown out like pleather is. Edit: For those who don't know, plastic can take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose and ruin ecosystems in the meantime. Cow leather is better for the environment because it breaks down faster, and cows aren't specifically raised for their leather, it's a byproduct. The number of farmed cows won't go down by switching over to pleather.

Edit: guys ive been informed by the great critical thinkers of the internet that cows, unlike all other living beings, can use alchemy to synthesize the element carbon out of other elements that definitely aren’t carbon, so they’re actually just as bad as burning fossil fuels and volcanoes erupting Plus cows are carbon neutral and essential for sustainable agriculture, and when they are slaughtered to make delicious steaks 🥩 their leather can make shoes, bags and other products that last for decades when properly cared for

@@sarahs.7419 Cows are NOT carbon neutral. They release a ton of methane, which wouldn't be an issue if we didn't farm SO many, a majority of crops are fed to them too and trees are cut down to make farming land for cows. You don't need to be a vegan to know this.

@@asurmenhandofasuryan4610 majority of non edible crops, like corn husks. There is massive organic waste associated with any kind of farming, and cows are the disposal system. All of the byproducts cows produce already existed in the environment. They are part of the carbon cycle. Saying having them is bad is like saying human beings merely being alive and breathing is bad. Now, raping the landscape by farming it until its no longer arable and then not using animals or controlled burns to revitalize the soil, that will turn out great for the planet.

@@sarahs.7419 That's the issue, factory farms never revitalise the soil anymore or leave it to rest. Its always production 24/7 which messes it up to every degree. Cows produce METHANE, due to how their digestive system is wired. Which wouldn't be an issue if we weren't factory farming them by the billions, across the world. It is BAD and messes up any sort of balanced cycle due to how long methane stays in the atmosphere, because there's so MANY. You cannot deny this, its scientific fact. It is bad for the environment, period. We don't feed them "just waste". They are fed full crops like soy and corn (which worsens the methane problem). Too much animal farming is bad, for the environment, animals, and people. I am not a vegan but I'm not denying this to make myself feel better.

I think it's a cool concept that needs improvement. Right now, I dont see it as recycling because of all the energy that seems to go into making it, but if they figured out a way to make it more energy efficient or for it to require no electricity, I could see myself calling it recycling.

Water is a concern as well. I'm sure just one sheet requires thousands of gallons of fresh water to create. Mango trees need lots of water.

@@RedFunk Well people are going to buy the mangos anyway, so the trees will be grown and there will always be off-spec fruits that get tossed. If you can reduce the waste produced normally, you're not increasing the resources put into the plants at all, just decreasing the lost on the farm's side.

@Obed Ningshen Actual, high-quality leather made from hide is both tougher, lasts longer and requires almost no industrial processing outside of cutting and stretching. Well-cared for leather lasts for more than a century of you know how to properly treat clothing made from it. PU Leather and this 'Vegan' leather is massively processed at every step of it's production, and the additives involved are usually plasticisers/softeners that aren't good for a human to be in contact with. The stuff either rots too quickly, or can't be recycled.

@@AdHocWholius partner, leather doesn't just fall off the cow. It has to be skinned off and scraped then shipped out for tanning, usually overseas. When it gets there it gets dunked in an acid to remove hair. After that it gets sorted and graded. Different grades for different uses. After that it gets softened, stretched, and dried. Then you cut it and finish it. Way more steps and shipping than Mango leather.

I was actually about to mention this, probably not a bigger carbon footprint, but the amount is definitely negligible and super close. Especially since machinery is used. Tbh, I'm interested in what the additives are, and what the protective glaze is made of. Its virtually impossible for anything to be completely green or vegan unfortunately.

The one thing they didn’t tell you, it’s nowhere near as tough as real leather, if you wear “vegan leather” as work boots, a motorcycle jacket, or use as a wallet or purse, the leather wears away much faster, requiring you to replace them more often, and it can even cause harm if used as a riding jacket if you get in a crash because of the fact it’s so much less durable

Unfortunately, most of the genuine leather on the market is not vegetable tanned but chrome tanned, which is extremely bad for the environment. It's hard only finding vegetable tanned leather.

@@legalizakaisa4601 that’s not true actually. Pinatex, an all natural leather made from the leaves of pineapples that would have gone to landfill, is made with zero pollutants to the environment. Not saying this mango stuff is the exact same, but that proves that it’s completely possible to make an alternative to leather without chemical pollutants, which is a huge one up on modern leather which uses chemical pollutants exclusively, and another one up because leather that comes from the skin of slaughtered animals is also incredibly bad for our environment and hugely resource intense to both “produce” (ie grow a cow for leather) and produce, ie take it from dead animal skin to a finished product.

It's quite simple. Those steps are nothing compared to feeding an entire animal for years. It's also not just done to reduce emissions but to have a better and cheaper alternative to synthetic leather, which takes a lot more steps and energy compared to this. The mango leather probably won't replace real leather since leather is a byproduct of food production.

Meanwhile the additives they're using to make this wearable fruit leather are probably plastics. How is that supposed to be better? Until animal related industries can be reformed, it's better for the planet to make use of every bit of them instead of waving around this 'saving the animals' stuff. The hide is already dead, nobody is killing cows for their hide only and we have TONS of it laying around.
