High-quality leather is synonymous with Italian fashion. Some of the most expensive leather is made through a process called vegetable tanning. It's a craft that has its origins in prehistory, and today the technique is kept alive in Tuscany. This time-consuming process can take weeks to produce a type of leather that becomes especially beautiful with age, all thanks to the use of naturally occurring vegetable tannins. While this method for making leather may be threatened by the world of fast fashion, its makers remain hopeful that genuine craftsmanship never goes out of style.

Leatherworker here. There is a vast difference in the quality between veg tan and chrome tan. The problem is that because chrome tan is so damned cheap it's very difficult to explain to the masses why your leather wallet you made to sell costs so much. They want it as a rock bottom price which doesn't even cover the leather let alone the time investment. I totally feel for leatherworkers trying to make a living. I just do it as a hobby.
@AlexanderMason1

You don’t seem to know as much as you think you do. Some of the nicest leathers out there are chrome tanned. The cheapest leather will usually be chrome tanned because it is cheaper to do but you have very high end chrome tanned leather as well. It is also stronger than vegetable tanned leather, has the potential to be softer than veg tan and is far more resistant to water and weather. They all have their uses but the best chrome tanned leather out there is way better than cheaper veg tanned leather. Naturally, because vegetable tanning lather costs more, you’re generally going to avoid making a cheaper product as a manufacturer. That being sad you have low-and vegetable tan lather it’s just like you have high-end chrome tan leather. It all depends on the finishing as well as the tanning.

@@AlexanderMason1 I've seen some dreadful veg tan stuff. it's just not as consistent. But when it's at its best a chrome tan leather can't really come close. Chrome tan is incredibly useful though. We should just be glad that those hides are being put to use
@zitronentee
@zitronentee Год назад
@@AlexanderMason1 It really depends on the recipe. Not all vegetable tanning agent are the same. To make softer vegetable tanned leather, you may need more certain fatliquor and technique. Chrome tanned leather has the advantage of being cheap and can have brighter, colorful color compared to vegetable tanned ones. Chrome applied usually is just 6% of dry weight at max. Vegetable tanning agent, depending on the recipe, may take 10-25% and longer time to soak. Note that due to chrome tanned leather being cheap, many use it for patent leather, in which the raw material with low quality can be used. The most obvious is LV bags, that already lose its leather characteristics. And yes, LV is the low tier of luxurious brand. Meanwhile, vegetable tanned leather usually for natural look leather, so it need higher quality raw material (and pricier). But you have to consider the environmental issues right now. The leather industry is currently lowering chrome usage since it's heavy metal. And that includes lowering synthetic tanning agent like Bisphenols.
@joshm3484
@joshm3484 7 месяцев назад
When comparing the same type of hide, chrome-tanned leather typically offers a softer texture, better water and stain resistance, more vibrant (albeit less deep) color options, increased heat resistance, less maintenance, superior tear resistance, and it's generally more cost-effective. However, it's essential to note that just because chrome-tanned leather is often used in cheaper products doesn't make it inferior. Many mistake its affordability for low quality, but renowned producers like Horween would beg to differ. While chrome-tanned leather has its advantages, it's distinct in appearance and has environmental implications. Now, when it comes to meticulous leather craftsmanship, vegetable-tanned leather might have an edge due to its rigidity, making it more manageable for detailed tasks like cutting, skiving, stamping, and stitching. While chrome-tanned leather can be equally stunning, veg-tan has a truly unique aesthetic. Additionally, vegetable-tanned leather's reduced elasticity makes it my preferred choice for items like belts.

For example with saddles, we need to take care of them because the stirrups can scratch the ontop of the use. A saddle can ve very expensive. You need that saddle to last. Very interesting. Chrome tanned leather is great for bags, jackets, and furniture, but when it comes to tooled pieces you really wouldn't want anything else other than veg tanned leather. Also chrome tanned leather will assist in steel rusting when it comes to knife sheaths and gun holsters you are going to want veg tan unless you are doing like a kydex one. I'm an armature leather worker. I just make things for fun, or gifts. I love using chrome tanned for things like dice bags, and sometimes costume pieces if I want to try and be ambitious. But when it comes to the occasional time I make a sheath, or holster I will use nothing but veg tanned. At least for any leather that will touch the blade, or metallic parts of a firearm.

I don't know about authentic local family shops but big brands are just advertisement ....In an article published by the New York Times in 2007, Gucci is, unfortunately, one of the big companies that have their goods manufactured by illegal Chinese laborers in Italy. These products are made down in the Tuscan town of Prato, located outside Florence. What you may not know is that Prato is the leading center for the production of leather goods by and for the top luxury brands. As a result and with the information about the use of illegal Chinese for labor, Prato boasts the second-largest Chinese population across Europe.

I work in Arzignano’s (Vicenza, Veneto) leather district. It’s quiet bigger than Santa Croce’s(Tuscany) district. In Arzignano I tan with Chrome and GDA (glutaraldehyde) every day, and I can say that this type of leathers are very different in features than vegetables tan. There is very good Chrome tanned leather and bad chrome tanned leather. With chrome and GDA the story is different than Vegetables tan, usually the industries make, from raw hides to wet blue or wet white, a standard product. The main features of the final product are made with re-tanning, neutralization, fat liquoring and drying methods. For example is used to add in re-tanning vegetables tannin or synthetic tannin to Chrome leather to emulate the Tuscany ones, this is made a lot for shoes leather. An important step is the finishing of the leather and this is another world. I hate when I hear “vegetables leather are the best in the world”, yes they have an unique look and they are amazing, but I wake up at 4 a.m every day to tan hides, and I work for 9 hours a day. I stay all the day near the drums to check pH every hour, to check that the all process is going fine, I give to the hides all my attentions. It’s a passion after all. Also in chrome and GDA leather there is hard work, passion and love for the product.

As a biochemist, this look into tanning actually looks more like a primitive plastic construction then anything else. Since the tannins tend to be benzene rings with alcohol or OH groups on the ends which the collagen will bind to which is also what most early plastic monomers were. The big difference between plastics and leather is that plastics often polymerize an entirely new physical network while the tannins in the leather are binding to a pre-existing physical mesh. In that way, I guess fiber glass could be considered a type of leather as it essentially has plastic-forming monomers branch and bind together multiple layers of pre-existing paper sheets kind of similarly to the way those monomers would like sheets of, or I guess threads because collagen forms into strings/threads, collagen to form leather

Correct! The term Vegan leather (which I think is hilarious) is nothing but synthetic leather made from chemicals (it's polyester/plastic basically) and used very loosely these days - brands are great at marketing and fooling those that are not aware. There are a lot of new raw materials recently that are not harmful and truly vegan in my opinion - cactus, pineapple, etc but I wouldn't call it leather. Not sure how long they last but as a a leather craftsman that uses vegetable tanned leather I can vouch for the quality, longevity and it's reduced environmental impact.

@@julm7744 Vegan and leather should not be used together. Just call it faux/synthetic material instead. The environmental impact these synthetic materials have (which contributes to fast fashion) is very deteriorating to the environment, unlike vegetable tanned leather. A bag for example made from vegetable tanned leather will last 3-4 times longer than these synthetic materials. I agree that chemical/chrome tanned leather is no good either (my opinion on this form of leather and the so called "vegan" leather is the same - it's Shite) Also, the term genuine leather is loosely used - it's worst quality of leather you can get. Look up the difference between that and full grain if you're interested. Yes my man hahaha, here my local dealer sells for 50€ a cowhide about 100cm m², what's make it expensive is the quality surface, texture, quality skin, colors added, colors are really expensive, you add alcohol based yourself but it's really diferent compared a tanned with pigments, they don't rub off so for using as Lining leather they won't rub off, in cheaper chromo tanned their lining leather it just smells so bad when you sweats on it and the color rubs off on your white socks
